Does anyone know if the upper midrange drop impacts female vocals at all? Can't decide between PH or Ebony.

BmxantMy impression is, that the PH due to its dip in mids (around 500Hz) sounds a bit more forward in the upper mids, which makes rock guitars and female vocals sound livelier. I had both and I contrary to my predictions I ended up selling my ebony.

von_SchatuInteresting, you're the first person I've heard say that about female vocals on the PH. What do you usually listen to?

BmxantSatriani and anime music :D
I must say though the differences were not night and day. Just a little bit more fun on the PH side.

von_Schatu Satriani is great, I listen to anime music as well, but I feel that a lot of the vocal trance I listen to falls into the 2-4k frequency range, which is what concerned me when comparing the two. From what I've gathered, some artists are better on the PH, and some are better on the Ebony. I wish I could get both.
The main thing that concerns me is the output impedance on my Xonar STX, apparently it's 10 ohms compared to the 0.1ohms of a magni.

BmxantYou are right, female vocals live in the 1-4k range, rock guitars also bite more when they are boosted around 2k. However most of the people, who have no pro audio training, do not realise that not only boosts have an effect, but cuts as well, though it is more subtle. You cut away the lower harmonics of a vocal range (as is with the lower-middle mids on the PH) it becomes thinner but clearer. To be true the PH is still on the relaxed side in the upper mids, it never gets offensive as my K712 for example. Even when I use it with a Denon D2000 aftermarket pad, which significantly reduces the upper bass and the overall thickness.
The impedance matching may be a problem though. I have the same thing with my Focusrite interface which I generally use as a DAC. Its output impedance is also around 10 Ohm, because it is optimised for studio use with AKGs and Beyers, mostly over 80-100 Ohms. I wasn't really trying my TH-X00 on it, but it significantly changed the sound of my M50x for the worse (37 Ohms). I ended up buying an Arcam rHead, which was sold here for quite a bargain considering its versatility and sound quality. But you are very well served with a Magni 3 as well.
