It's a shame that Halos don't come in PCB mount, I have my first and only PCB-mounted project coming up, and will probably go with Outemu Skies. I would probably get retooled Box Burnt Oranges if they weren't also 3 pinners. Any recommendations for more heavy "bump at the top" switches that are affordable?
Long time linear switch user here. Taking one for the team for other people who don't know too much about tactile brown-ish clear-ish switches. Joined this drop for halo trues but don't yet really know what to expect. Most of the reviews online are for input club's hako switches, while the halos are kind of treated as the elephant in the room. ... the few reviews there are for halo switches are extremely confusing: I've heard everything from "clicky" to "tactile", "easy to bottom" out and "therapy for people who bottom out too much". As for the differences between Clears and Trues, all I read is that the Trues are a little bit harder to bottom out. Since I've never tried these in a store before, I'll go into this with an open mind and I'll make sure to review these by comparing them to Kaihua Silver and MX Red.

What's with all the talk about these switches getting heavier once you're past the bump? Is it very noticeable?
jasdfhg
I guess it depends on the way you type. Some people don’t button out and some do. I don’t think it’s very noticeable.
It's difficult to tell from verbal descriptions of these and other switches what they are going to be like in actual use. I was thinking of buying the 63 key switch tester that Massdrop is offering, but I am not much of an experimenter and I would probably only use it once and then it would become a $40 dust collector. People here seem to have a lot of experience with many different key switch brands and flavors so I thought somebody might be able to help me out here and maybe save me some time and money on my constant quest. What I am looking for are switches that are easy to press, allow me to feel a click before they bottom out, and are extremely quiet. The most important part of this to me is the quiet. I would like their silence to be so deafening that it can drown out a jackhammer six feet away, but I know nothing that moves is going to be truly silent. I just want to get as close to that as I can. I have three 84 key mechanical keyboards so far and although I like them all, I don't feel like I am getting close to my ideal yet. I have NIZ Capacitive, Cherry MX Reds, and Gateron Browns. I have dampened the reds and browns with silicone O rings but they are still quite noisy in my world, especially on the up stroke. I think that overall, the NIZ feels the best and may also be the least noisy. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Other than switches built to be silent (Aliaz, silent Zealios, Cherry Silent switches, etc), or using silencing clips (o-rings only slightly work), switches are all inherently loud in some way. In terms of normal switches, Linears are the only type that are close to be quieter than most, but still make the same noise as other switches on bottoming out and upstroke anyway. I might recommend silent Zealios (Zilents) as they are definitely quiet themself. The 62g (bottom out weight) is definitely light. However, most of what makes a keyboard quiet is the keyboard itself. For example, my Leopold FC660M with standard Cherry Reds is by far one of my quietest keyboards due to the way its built, and their usage of sound dampening material inside. Whereas the more hollow keyboards I use on the regular (TKC1800, CM Storm TKL, and K-Type) are all nowhere near as quiet, despite using these switches and 68g Zilents.

The NIZ is a topre clone and have a different sound than mechanical switches due to the spring and the rubber inside. If you like that sound i would recommend you to check out the Cherry MX Silent Red or Blacks. Check some videos on youtube with some soundtests, im sure you will like the silent switches. And if you are going further into the rabbit hole you can begin to check out switches like megalonzerg recommends, they are more expensive though and you need to built your own keyboard as those switches doesnt come premade with any keyboard atm.
Not sure whether or not to get the trues or the clear

I'm loving the trues
Just wondering if these switches will fit in the tecware 87 phantom which is hot swappable.
Cobes234
Yes, they will work. Any MX style switches will work.
can i put these in redragon kumara?
Load 2 more comments
You need to desolder the switches which are in your board now in order to solder the new ones in. It’s pretty complicated. Anyway the reddragon kurmara is the effort not worth.
But the switches would fit
I just bought a keyboard:( I wish I saw this earlier
So I was going to get the Pandas, and I clicked on these by mistake due to the picture looking identical on my phone. I know, I know - totally my fault, but it's been a busy week. So anyway, I missed the Panda deadline thinking it was the deadline for these. I am totally bummed out by that - should I get these to recompense myself, or would I be selling myself short?

That's what I figured, so am waiting for them to come back around. :)

You can use these halo switches with the red pandas that novelkeys has right now and make your own holy panda/holy GSUS switches. It will cost a little more because you have to buy two switches to get one switch but you should get them before the holy pandas that mass drop just ran, plus people in the community have actuly gotten samples and tried them. Massdop never sent samples out before drop to confirm that the molds were repaerd properly. I'm getting both the massdop untested holy pandas. And red pandas/GSUS swithes to make my own. You can also get some of zeals v2 zeleos they feel pretty amazing and I hear are close to holy panda. I don't know how long novelkeys will have the red pandas in stock but they have them right now. good luck hope this helps.
So, which one is heavier, the True or the or the Clear?

True

are these switches similar to Hako clears / trues ?

Massdrop and Input Club (I:C) designed these switches for their K-type collaboration keyboard. I:C then wanted to use these in (I think) a Whitefox keyboard. The Whitefox is made by I:C, it's not a collaboration board. Well due to the legal stuff and paperwork. Massdrop owned the rights to manufacturer the Halo switches and didn't want I:C to use them in their board. Legally, it was okay. So I:C had to make their own switch

Going back to your original question, these are similar but they seem to have a much more defined tactile bump. Personally, I didn't like the Hako switches (the tactility was so subtle that they almost feel linear to me) but decided to snatch some of these up based on some reviews that I read and I'm pleased with the purchase. It's nothing crazy, but the tactility definitely seems more pronounced than your standard Cherry MX Clear, and is way more pleasing to use than the Hako Clears.
Are either of these as quiet as gateron browns? In the market for new switches, but need to be mindful about noise levels in a house with 4 other people. Thanks!

I don't know I only own aliaz 80g. But I doubt they are as tactile as MX clears. Keep an eye on the new outemu silent sky. They are cheaper than zilent with a bump in the middle.

TekilaShot
It seems they fall in between browns and clears, which means more tactile than the Halo switches. "Sadly" for my wallet it sounds like the Zilents or Zealios will be the closest to what I want.
Comparison to Cherry browns? clear or true closest ?
bfitz
The clear and true have the same stem shape. Just different colored. The true has a heavier spring. The halo clear uses a spring that mimics cherry clears. Either way, both of these switches will be quite a bit heavier than a brown
erickong
Just got mine from post. 70 clears. Board they are going in is not here yet, but just sitting on couch with one of the "extras"(not using all 70, but most) is great. They make browns feel like mush. If you like browns and are a heavy handed clacker, these are fabulous 👍.
Just put it on my board. Feels nice but there is an unholy ping sound on every stroke
Iamwetter
Try lubing the switches
Wth? My halo trues are not tactile at all. It’s like reds with a heavier spring. They’re linear. Nothing like my hhkb. Disappointing.

The leaf might be bent weirdly. I tried modifying a halo and bent the leaf and had the same effect. I just bent it back and all was new

I think they are tactile at the very top
I'm so confused. So Kaihl Box Royals are in "Gateron" marked housings while Halos come in "Kaihl" marked housings?? What the what?
Load 1 more comment
You’re right. My mistake. I think I was confused with a zealios.
2ndRoad805
Zealios are made by gateron
is it true that lubing these switches is almost mandatory?
Original_Piledrivers
These switches are pretty smooth stock, you might be thinking of Holy Pandas, which are kinda scratchy unlubed
is it the last batch of halo stock or is there going to be more?>
I don't think he was asking about lubing, lol. OldCat, it looks like they may be doing the rolling stock thing they do with some of their headphones where it runs for a couple days, then ships, then "drops" again. If I'm not mistaken, they just had a 2 day drop of these end. Or they may be selling off remaining inventory like another commenter said.
(Edited)
So when is this drop going to end? It says 13 hours, but it seems to reset?
10LetterName
They're selling out of their stock.

Ohh thanks!
All in

You wild, give me access to your bank account Alf boy
Will these damage any gmk keycaps?
aplusvic
No
aplusvic
As OldCat said. The answer is no. That was a problem only with Kailh Box switches
Are these switches compatible with the RGB from the GMMK TKL?

Thank you very much, I am still new to this!
SniiKz
We all gotta start somewhere!
Do these come with RGB LED's, or are they just compatible? And if they need LED's purchased seperately, does anyone know which ones would work on a Magicforce board?
Load 1 more comment
There are no LED cutouts on the Halo switches so the only choice would be a board that has RGB SMDs on the PCB. The light difuser in the Halo and True switches goes completely through from the top of the switch cover down to the base of the switch housing. TLDR; desoldering a Magicforce would lose the ability to use LED lights if installing these Halo switches.
Jedi
When I say LED cutouts, I mean the SMD cutouts. 2x3x4 LEDs can sometimes be used in those spaces, which is what I did when soldering together a Tada68 using white 2x3x4's and Box Jade switches. It's a close fit, but doesn't interfere with switch operation. I had to be careful when pressing switches into the plate, but it wasn't impossible. Desoldering a Magicforce would not be worth the effort, imo, unless you were getting a Tragicforce68 programmable replacement PCB. Not impossible, but not desirable.

These are in stock? Wha
how do they work with rgb (ie the rgb on the ctrl or alt) kinda wanna use em on a kb with rgb

The LED in the CTRL will not get in the way of the way, vice versa. The north facing LED in the CTRL will pair perfectly with the north facing transparent slot in the Halo switches
myroblyte
I have these in my ALT right now. They are compatible and the lighting is fantastic.
First we get new Pandas, than Holy Pandas drop and now this. Nice.
joined gsus gb, need more halos
God I love True switches so much. I bought them thinking, eh let's get a taste, I'm sure they're the same thing as hako's. and then I fell in love with them. Kicking myself in the ass for only getting the 60 pack. If this drop hits again I will probably get a couple 120 packs, Because every keyboard I build from now on I am going to put these in.

Halo's have a distinct pop when you release the switch, Hako almost feels... Linear? if that makes sense.
mille7ax
No wonder I was underwhelmed by the Hako samples I got. They really didn't seem special at all, especially compared to Box Royals.
