Bought this... starting to get into camping so this might be a weird area to ask but looking for a 2-3 person tent (probably edging to 3 person for additional room), what's the way to go?

BlakeMorrowThat's a loaded question amigo. The answer is one of those it depends. Some things to consider: use(car camping, backpacking, thru-hiking), number of people you would need or want to accommodate , with or without pets, 3 or 4 season camping , climate where you will do your camping, and finally budget. Backpacker Magazine does a great job and has resources online that can help with your decision and they do honest field testing of the gear they recommend. The Kelly Salina that's being dropped is not a bad place to start. REI also has great online resources and their gear is solid and reasonably priced. Be careful it can become a sickness.

BlakeMorrowthis is a pretty big question With lots of variables
Is this a tent just for you or are you sharing it with someone
whats your budget?
Do you live in the desert or NW or somewhere in between And as a result do you want true double wall, hybrid double wall, or are you okay with single wall.
Will you be snowed on?
Is free standing important (it isn't)
if you arent sharing with anyone a two person tent will be more than sufficient. If you are sharing then a large two or small 3 will give you more space.
In general I recommend tents from two manufacturers. Six moon Designs and tarp tent.
given your two to three person request I'd look at the stratosphere from tarp tent. It's a big double Wall shelter with good head room and reasonably light weight. It does use trekking poles or optional vertical poles for support and is not freestanding but lbs/sqft for a double Wall tent it's tough to beat.
if you are mostly solo and want more room the two person skyscrape trekker from six moon designs is where I would start looking

Greg2Sharing with a second person. I'm tall - 6"3', will hopefully fit me, and equipment, or at least shelter for equipment. It's to be used around New South Wales in Australia, no snow (probably considered 3 seasons as our winter isn't too bad?). Easy to setup (lol)... Cheers

BlackElkBrands like Sierra Designs, MSR, and Big Agnes are great choices in a 3 person model or any model and are ordered lowest to highest price but all are spacious and have vestibules for gear. They are also ordered lowest to highest price. I have used all of these brands from the Texas Big Bend to the high Sierras in California and everywhere in between. I have had my MSR for ten years plus and have only had to replace the rain fly once. Consider getting a footprint to add to the longevity and durability of your gear.

BlakeMorrowLots of variables. For backpacking we have a Big Agnes Slater UL2+. It's large enough for my husband (6'1") and myself to sleep comfortably (key word), three season with a good fly, easy setup and it's light enough to backpack with at 2lbs 9oz. You can get lighter tents but the extra wiggle room makes both of us tolerable to be around the next day ;). They also make a 3 person tent, the UL3.
