How much weight can this handle? I have a large partner and was tossing between this and the V Luxe however if his weight will make this unstable I would go for the V Luxe then.

CastrophicNot sure of weight it can handle up to. But I can tell you that both models you reference are the same thickness. The Luxe is just much wider and has hardier fabric.

HubeyDoobyDooThanks for your thoughts, the Klymit website has the V Luxe at 3" so is that bit thicker. I'm heading towards that way as I think being sturdier would be a good thing when you are heavier. We will be backpacking with young kids hence my temptation to go lighter! Has anyone had young kids on a Klymit mat? How's they go?

CastrophicI sit corrected! The website does list it at 3" versus 2.5". The reviews on the page everyone says it's very comfortable so no complaints there. Probably very welcome for just a 2.5oz weight penalty. As a child I was given 1" self inflating mats. I would have cried with joy if I was given 2.5" of inflated goodness!

CastrophicStability is a tricky thing on an inflatable pad. The Klymit v-baffle does pretty ok here...much better than the long vertical baffles on something like the BA and Exped pads, a bit better than the horizontal baffles on the x-lite pads which can collapse pretty easily when you get near the edges, but not as good as the quilted pocket welds on the Sea To Summit pads, which are the most stable and non-bouncy pads I've ever used besides the old standby self-inflating foam Thermarests. I don't recall ever seeing any weight limits on pads but I know some guys 250+ and nobody has ever blown a seam or anything. Going thicker with the Luxe might be a good idea, but even that slight 1/2" increase may add a little bounciness and he'll probably still bottom out when sitting up or putting too much pressure on an elbow, etc...that's gonna happen with most pads. The bounce feeling is really pretty minimal on Klymit pads anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem. I guess the best thing would be to have him try out different pads anyway. I would really recommend checking out the green pad from Sea To Summit. It's still a single layer pad of theirs like the ultralight models, but a little thicker and with decent insulation. They use a good durable 40d fabric, awesome dual-use flat valve, and that quilting is fantastic even though it looks weird until you try it out. They have some heavier pads with the dual chambers which are supremely comfortable but a lot heavier, too. He'd probably enjoy the ultralight pads on this drop, too, but there's only one way to find out.

CastrophicIn have kids (8+6) around my neo air xlite it hasnt been issuE, you just teach them not to jump on things. My one daughter uses a old style neo air short and again no issues. Durability wise I don't dont see a difference with these.
im much more concered with them ripping the 15d tent fly on my golite mid. Luckily this hasnt happened yet. I have my 2 kid baseweight down to about 18 lbs with them carrying them carrying their own bags

Greg2Thanks everyone, I've got a 3 + 5 year old so just getting into it now as can start to walk a few kilometres without an issues, albeit very slow (oo, oo, look at this, and this, and this!!). I ended up going with the v luxe for my partner to give him no excuses at all. I'm going with the Klymit V Lite for me as want it sooner than later. I think I will get two of the short versions of this. Fair point about teaching them to be respectful with them, just can be difficult at times with a three year old!

CastrophicYou're welcome! And I think you chose well for your needs. Are you crafty? Maybe you could make a tarpaulin fitted sheet to go under your kids pads? Experience is the best teacher. So if they break the pads now they will learn at an early age the need to look after their belongings. And what a month or so of no pocket money feels like to cover repairs!

That's my next plan, a good tent! I picked the small for my 3 year old and the regular for my 6 year old (just realised I wrote 5!). She's already 125cm so best to go bigger. Taking a bit of a punt that they won't mind the layout of these mats. I am crafty HubeyDoobyDoo so that's definitely a consideration to at least avoid this. I'll probably just have to aim to set up the mats just before bed rather than early on. All a new adventure, we've done tonnes of car camping but would love to go a bit wilder.
