I finally dropped into it... I just bought the Massdrop O2 desktop edition 110V. It will be a cheap basic complement to my Massdrop Sennheiser HD6xx headphones (and other headphones than I have HD25-1, HD598, ath-m50x, HD420sl, Amperior, etc.). I already have the Audioquest Dragonfly Red for portable usage with my iPhone and iPad. I will use the O2 plugged into the line out of my Onkyo network/stereo receiver for desktop/Lounge usage (The Onkyo has a AKM 32 bit DAC built in). I guess I may also use the Dragonfly as a DAC and plug it into the O2? I understand that the O2 desktop edition has AC power supply but no batteries... I guess I may order then from JDS later on... any comments on using the O2 with the HD6xx/650? Did I do the right thing in ordering the O2 desktop edition with normal gain (2.5x and 6.5x gains) ?

tessierpgI had read that the medium gain desktop unit was the preferred option in the comments below, but there is probably some debate on that.

jb70Found it.
FuckHead-Fi Re-posted... Bonzaixx1 -- DAC's have a standard output of 2 volts so to get to the maximum voltage of the O2 (7v) you need a maximum gain of 3.5X.

tessierpgI built my O2 with the default 2.5x and 6.5x gains and I find that the 6.5 gain is almost too much for HD6xx. I think something more akin to 5x would be better.
The desktop editions from both places will not have the batteries. You need the space that the batteries occupy on the PCB to accommodate the rear mounted connections. If you build it yourself you could put it in a housing with space enough to have both rear mounting connections and batteries though. If you're going to build one though, I'd suggest a different amp. There are better DIY projects out there.

HeeftyThanks for your answer. I don't really need the batteries. I have the Dragonfly Red fir portable usage... I prefer the Desktop model because I will be using it in the living room plugged from my Onkyo Network Receiver line out which is rated "nominal 100mv/ max 1v/2.3kohms"...I guess the higher 6.5v gain is therefore preferable? And I guess that I can use the lower 2.5v gain when I use the Dragonfly Red 2v output or my Cd Player 2v direct line out as a source? Is it the right way of planning it?

tessierpgSounds like a reasonable plan to me.

Thanks. I'll stick with the regular version (2.5/6.5x) with the line out of my Onkyo Network receiver, I get up to 1v of output, so i'll be glad to use the 6,5x gain. And when I use the output of my Dragonfly Red Dac of 2v max of output, i'll use the 2.5x gain selection... It should work out fine... My only real concern now is the Late July shipment date of this baby amp...
