I really hope Massdrop drops a DAC/Amp that will effortlessly power the 1000's of 6XX's they've sold , and for a reasonable price. This seems like it'll do the job but barely.
MeanDeenerI ordered Standard Gain model for 6XX's and now I am afraid that I had rather to buy Moderate Gain one. I am afraid that I will have excess gain.
MeanDeenerIt's not barely, it's actually quite short. For something optimal for the HD6XX (power-wise), you'd be looking at an amp that can do 250mW between 300ohms and 600ohms. More is better, but sometimes quality is better than quantity and that's where the O2 shines.
MeanDeenerOh, I think the O2 will do very well, and I think it will do better than a Magni. Like I said before, power isn't everything. The O2 (in my experience) is more transparent than the Magni, probably due to better design or components in the circuitry (well at least in the USA-made variety). The difference is slight but it's there.
For situations where you want to expand your headphone collection, and your other headphone needs nowhere near the same power as the HD6XX, you'll be glad you got the O2 instead.
EDIT: I decided to remove all the tech-talk and maths of how I arrived at 250mW, as I feel it probably didn't add much to the conversation.
JackulaSo for my collection we're looking at the HD6xx of course, the HiFiMan 4XX and my Grado SR80's. I'm using the 4 months of wait time to do my research and get the best amp/deal possible. I'll probably refrain from buying more headphones after that so ideally the next amp I buy will be able to power those headphones. I'll worry about upgrading amp/headphones after I get promoted a few times LOL.
