HamrobesI do not own a Schiit amp or many other amps, so I cannot compare that much, but I may tell you that I own the Massdrop O2 standard desktop version (2.4x/6.5x gain modes), I own the Dragonfly Red and I own the Senn/Massdrop HD6xx (I also own other headphones such as the HD600, the HD25-1 II, the Amperior, the Momentum over ear wireless, The Momentum I over ear, etc.., but my go to headphones are the HD6xx).
Based on my usage with sources mainly from the iPad Pro or the iPhone 6s or the Onkyo TX-NR646 and TX-8160 network stereo receivers using in most cases Spotify Premium, I can tell you that the Dragonfly Red is a very good match sonically to the HD6xx both in DAC/amp mode alone or in DAC mode only using the O2 as an amp. The DFR is not very powerful and will not play very loud but I do not listen to the HD6xx that loud and it suits me very well in portable usage. When in the living room, I use the O2 mostly with my HD6xx with the the Onkyos in line-out mode (these amps use the AKM 32 bit DACs, the same AK4452 or AK4458 series as in the Massdrop SDAC) and many times using the iPad/iPhone source with the DFR in DAC mode with the O2 and the sound experience is excellent. Obviously the O2 plays louder than with the DFR alone. In my opinion, the DFR/HD6xx and DFR/O2/HD6xx combos are the best bang for the buck combos you can possibly find. The other variation I would suggest is the Massdrop SDAC/O2 combo but having the DFR as a portable standalone solution is also very useful. If used with the DFR in DAC mode or an SDAC with the O2, I would then suggest the Massdrop O2 Medium desktop version (gain 1x/3.3x) because the 3.3x gain is optimized with 2.1V outputs provided by DACs like the DFR or SDAC (or most DACs out there). I have the standard gain version of the O2 because my Onkyos sources have a 1V line out output. Therefore, my setup using the DFR in DAC mode with the O2 using the 2.4x gain is good but not optimized to the maximum specification of the O2 (which would then be the 3.3x gain mode which I don’t have on my Standard version of the O2).

tessierpgThank you for your reply! I ended up purchasing the Objective2 from jds labs last night for $99 (it was on sale from $129). I lucked out because I chose the 1x/3.3x gain. It put a big smile on my face reading your post because it means I chose the gain which is optimized for using the Dragonfly Red due to its 2.1 v output. Thanks for that info! I'm excited to hear what it all sounds like feeding my various headphones, especially the Sennheiser HD6xx, AKG K7xx, and my V-Moda Crossfade 2!

HamrobesRemember to push your DFR at maximum output volume when using it in DAC mode. That is what is suggested by the manufacturer Audioquest. You will then get the full 2.1V output.

monotaurThey are excellent for what they are and they do: portable closed on-ear headphones. Noise isolation is exceptional, without active noise cancelling. They are high PRAT and balances headphones, with very good bass, mids and lively highs. They don’t need headphone amps and may be well driven by portable equipment such as iphones and ipads. But they don’t match the sound quality of open over ear headphones such as the HD6xx. They are completely different headphones for completely different usage.

I also have AKG K7xx headphones. Will this O2 amp be a decent match with those too?
Bonus question: How does the Objective2 amp compare to the Magni 3 amp, particularly for the Sennheiser HD6xx and AKG K7xx
