...and to think, I bought the first version on the pretenses of a matching DAC coming out in a few months (as was teased by Massdrop during the first drop). Except, the first amp - which still has legs on it, suggesting it is to be placed on something like a *desk* - is no longer intended to be the amp in this amp/DAC combo we've all been excited about?
So where does that leave all of us who enlisted early? Please tell me, Massdrop, that you have something in mind planned to assuage the situation.

nat.ken.coleIt was never teased. The DAC is and probably will always be under license from another supplier.
MassDrop made it clear from day one they're just providing the cheaper version of the AMP while sticking true to the original design. 80 Bucks is still a a hell of a deal.

YakovIt was, in fact, teased during the first drop. Go to page 1 of the discussion, and scroll down to Will's (Massdrop employee) comment from 2 months ago:
"Q: Is there going to be an ODAC compliment? A: There will be a complementary DAC released on Massdrop very soon. It won't be exactly the ODAC (because the ODAC is not published under the same license as the O2, a company called yoyodyne consulting in Canada owns the design) but it will meet the same needs from an audio perspective and from a design perspective (it'll fit nicely with this O2 and we should have some custom interconnects to keep your desk looking clean)."
Please pay special care to the final parentheses. Plus, no mention of an updated design to follow.
Is the "desktop" version of the amp substantially different than the one I bought? Nope. Would I have waited to spend $95 for this newer version instead of $80 for the other? Yep.
