Depends... hd6xx has accurate, clear, some what wide sound stage for game n movies. Thx00 is incredibly good also and the best part about it is the bass which the hd6xx lacks.
Having owned both, the 6XX are a far better deal for an all rounder - in my personal opinion the X00 are for people who already have a couple other headphones and want closed backs with a lot of bass (mainly the purplehearts, I wasn't too fond of the other 2 versions).
Sold the X00, kept the 6XX and have owned original 650s for what's coming up on like 12 years now. If you really just want them for music and gaming then I guess it'd be a little bit of a closer call because bass is cool for explosions and shit but either way, my stance remains the same.
i prefer fostex...but if you're looking for the sennheiser go with the hd-650. Same exact model as 6xx and you don't have to wait forever to be shipped.
Philips X2 definitely has its fanboys, but I wouldn't say it's better than HD6xx. Or THX00 for that matter. But the key is the "I wouldn't say." There's plenty of people that would.
You're definitely in the price range where you have to shop for your personal preferences. Once you get to around $1000 you can start demanding a headphone that does all things well, but where you're talking, you're going to be making concessions for savings. Your best bet is to try them out and keep the one you like best.
I recommend hitting up your local stereo shop for anything much above $200 to try them out and find out which ones you like best.
If this is your first semi-serious set of cans, you'll probably be mostly happy with any of them and should go with whichever one is prettiest.
