Mass drop, please explain to me how this works. It takes till December to ship the first 11500 units (hd6xx). This is due to supply chain inventory supply but you can produce an additional 10,000 units and ship them out at the same December time period. This does not make sense does it? How and why can you do this. 21000 units in the same time period as 11500 units. I t seems that the first 11500 could be shipped sooner.

JpullSupply Chain and mass production works a bit differently to our buy now ship now amazon cultivated expectations. Sennhaiser would not have raw materials and components just chilling in the warehouse. Most large businesses follow a 'buy it when we need it model' to 'justify the cost of production'. With the large influx of cash they would have gotten with the first drop, more than likely they would have been able to incentivize one or a few component suppliers re: credit and payments and the component suppliers would have responded with something like 'Well if you can pay that up front, we can supply 2X' which would have then precipitated the new drop.
Or something like that. Actual manufacturing and assembly time remains the same, it's just maybe a few suppliers upped their shipping numbers to Sennhaiser.

ReynaldoWell more of a just-in-time manufacturing. Most manufacturers will have some level of inventory but not a lot. I work in the production industry and we never have more than 2 weeks worth of supplies. They will need to have some level of inventory but just not more than they need for whatever their production schedule is. In the business world you don't want to tie all your money into inventory as that is the reason why Sennheiser isn't just going to have a huge inventory of raw materials on them. They would need to talk to suppliers first to see if they can provide the enormous amounts of raw materials. Sometimes they can and sometimes they can't because of what they're asking for is greater than what they can usually supply in that time frame.
@Jpull Well just think about it using just-in-time manufacturing.
Raw Materials Inventory: 1. Plastic 2. Metal 3. Driver
Make a headphone. We keep making headphones, we ran out of metal and completed 500 headphones. We can't make headphones until we get more metal for the headbands. Waiting for more metal to come in so we can make more headphones. Look, we got a little bit of metal so we can make 500 more headphones in the process. Well we ran out of drivers, have to wait 2 weeks to get more drivers in from China. The supplier fulfills a partial order for drivers earlier than expected, you got 200 drivers and can make 100 more headphones.
You see it's a giant trickle process slowly making them. On-top of that they have to check QC and make sure the headphones actually work and are within the sonic quality tolerances of that specified headphone. And then they have to package them (another part of your assembly line).
Things can and will go wrong during the manufacturing process increasing waste and increasing the time to manufacture the product. Oops! Our plastic molding machine is injecting too much plastic. Or it went down and we need maintenance to fix it. Our machine to shape the metal part of the headband broke. Maintenance has to come fix it. A working or broken machine will determine how well and how fast you can make a product. And you can't always run them forever because they will eventually need maintenance.
Welcome to the production industry where we make stuff for people to buy.

JpullSennheiser said that it doesn't take long to make them, but they don't have parts laying around and their suppliers estimated 5 months for parts. Remember the first drop? It took them 6 months to send out the correct cables because they didn't have them to send out. Its not an issue of supply and demand, it's just a matter of getting enough parts in to build that many units to keep up with the order.

lshriverGet everything together and 5mo. later, say November, Drop. Make 3000 items and ship to 1000 walmarts. Good deal, nice headphone, but baffling. Buy now, get 6 mo. later. Sorry MD. I have never seen such a strange deal .

JpullThe real reason is that they were probably fully prepared for these numbers at the beginning, and chose to make the drop seem smaller to get people into it quickly, adding to the production number when required.

ElsidOnly 3000 units? The first drop was 5000 and ended in like 2 hours. 3 units per store? Good luck getting them. Im willing to wait as we're the other 12,000+ so far that gave joined

ElsidThanks! I already had a 650 but I sold it to get this and make a little money instead of buying new ones earpads (instead of buying new ear pads, why not make money and get new ones?) and I have a modi 2 uber DAC with a bottlehead crack amp that I soldered myself. I plan on adding a speedball to it next year and maybe buying a hd800 S (I've used them a lot before but I want to own a pair)
