This drop makes me happy, because this headphone is amazing. This drop also makes me sad, because 5 percent of you will actually amp it correctly.

UzuzuNo, you're wrong. It's 8%.

UzuzuI'm probably in that 95%. How can I "amp it correctly"? I currently have an E17K for my HD598.

RufusMake sure the amp you are using has 300mw output @ 300 Ohms, at Least. If it's like 100mw @ 300 ohms or 50mw @300 ohms like most budget amps being used by a lot of people here, the bass won't sound right it will be loose and won't sound full. Everything sounds "thinner" at least with this headphone when it is under amped. What is sad though is that even being driven halfway, these headphones sound decent so a lot of people won't ever hear the true "lushness" of the hd650 or know it has way better potential. I've seen them on sale secondhand on head-fi and on ebay all the time, and then I see a person's source and then you just know it, they sold it because they didn't enjoy it, but they never amped it right.
The E17K will not amp the 6xx/650 well. Neither does the E09k or the K5 that it docks into. You still need an amp that swings more voltage. On the bright side a lot of people are using the Magni, which almost drives it enough so it should sound alright out of that but I haven't paired it.
I would recommend the Schiit Vali or Lyr with Amperex 6dj8/6922 Little Dot MK2/III/IV/SE, Darkvoice Cavalli Liquid Carbon, Bottlehead Crack
It's going to sound best out of an OTL tube amp or a hybrid that shoves large power. Your best budget pick is the Vali 2 and I can recommend any tube based on your listening preferences but to me Amperex 60s tubes sound the best by far.

UzuzuFWIW, neither the Vali 2 or the base Magni 2 quite meet your 300mw @ 300 ohm standard according to Schitt specs, though from what I have read either would drive the 650/6xx reasonably well (I don't have either amp and won't have the 6xx until Christmas). The Magni 2 Uber (which I do have) does meet this standard. However, I'll likely be driving the 6xx with the Little Dot Mk III (I'm currently using Electro Harmonix 6H30PI gold pin power tubes and have a pair of Voshkod 6ZH1P-EV driver tubes in transit). The Little Dot works well with my 150 ohm HD700, though I'll likely increase the gain from 5 to 10 for the 6xx.
BTW, I would have loved to try a Bottlehead Crack with the Speedball add on, but I have neither the expertise or skill to assemble it and less than zero desire to acquire same. There is a former Bottlehead assembler who will build it for you, but his services almost double the price.

MarloweYeah it will sound very good out of all your amps. I find it just a tad boring though off of most solid state amps, but it's still really good and will be good for most. I don't think you'll need another amp at all if you have the MKIII, lol. I'd recommend some Amperex tubes again. The Harmonix tubes sound good but they are pretty flat and have dry mids, IMO. Also there is some argument about 6DJ8 vs 6922 Amperex tubes, as well as the gold lettered USA made tubes and the white lettered Holland made tubes... I have tried all of those tubes including a really rare gold lettered Holland. They all basically sound the same. Even if they aren't gold plated and are just run-of-the-mill 6dj8's, if they are amperex and have the same design and getter on the inside they all sound almost the same. I have a cheap 20 dollar 6dj8 that sounds about as good as the tubes I have in my Lyr 2 right now (Holland White Label 7308s (about $80 each). O or Halo-getter sound best.

UzuzuI'll be enjoying mine with a Woo Audio WA7 & a good inventory of nos tubes to roll in. Also have the Grace m9XX.

UzuzuI think it does come down to preference though because I did prefer my hd650 out of the jotenheim vs the darkvoice with any tube combo I tried, I ended up selling my darkvoice recently, I liked it at first but after having the jotenheim for a while the darkvoice seemed to dull. Just my opinion and if I had the space and unlimited funds I would definitely own another tube amp

Petronas44Yeah, the darkvoice is definitely its own beast, and well.... dark. Just grab a vali 2 for a cheap tube setup, and hey it only needs 1 tube.

UzuzuWhat about the Cnetrance Dacport Slim? Would that be a good option as an amplifier? Have you experience with it?

buchiyeNo experience using it. It's fine for easy to drive headphones though, certainly not the 6xx/650

UzuzuSo I guess if you use an amp below 200 dollars, it won't cut it :( That is what I can afford at the moment and was on the fence either to buy the dacport slim or not.
