Finally got in On this drop! Does anyone know how the creative sound blaster e5 will push these these? They say they have enough power for up to 300ohms but it maybe a stretch. I am trying to see if Schiit will come out with the modi 3 to go with the Magni 3 before I get the stack and buy the modi 2 just for a month or 2 later and the third model comes out

RareAirsThe E5 is supposed to be good up to 600 ohms, it even has a dual gain switch (low gain for up to 300 Ohms, high gain for 300-600 Ohms). You should be fine running the E5 until you decide to upgrade, I know I'm going to be driving my 6XXs with the E3 I already own until I pick up a Schiit Stack myself.

Fragger56You’re right it does say up to 600 ohms but seems like a stretch to me especially since it is made for portable use and that Is what I will finally be able to use it for once I get a real desktop unit

RareAirsIt will drive them fine, just not super loud, I managed to find the actual output power specs on the E5 and they are as follows:
  • Headphone power output: 32ohm – ~1.84V, 105 mW (low gain); 300 ohm – ~ 1.78V, 109 mW (high gain); 600 ohm – ~ 5.72V, 54 mW (high gain)
  • Headphone output impedance: 2.2 ohm

The Schiit Modi 3 puts out 450 mW into 300 ohms by comparason, so the E5 will put out roughly 1/4 of the max volume the Schiit Modi 3.
The amount of power the Modi 3 has is way overkill for normal listening btw, so again, the E5 should be more than fine for normal listening until you upgrade to a proper desktop amp.

Fragger56Nice thank you for the info. How does the power compare to your e3 at 300ohms? Or is it basically the e5 on low gain mode

RareAirsI haven't received my 6XXs yet, so I couldn't say, the highest impedance cans I have are a pair of AKG 7XXs and they are only 62 ohm. I believe the E3 is supposed to have similar output power though, which would give equal power at sub 100 ohms as at 300 ohms (100mW ish) and even with just 100mW they get plenty loud. Also the E3 is supposed to be capable of driving 600 ohm cans as well, it just lacks a gain switch and has lower quality audio components.
