Just received my shipment, and I couldn't be more satisfied. Everything I'm listening to sounds extremely clean, as compared to the AKG K7XX. Jazz charts and Rock are more balanced. Classical and Concert pieces are clear. Top 40 and Dance are more vibrant. The HD6XX are also a bit comfortable than the K7XX.

geosali94I'm actually slightly disappointed. My primary headphone is the Sennheiser HD700, with occasional use of the Hifiman 400i (I also have the Philips Fidelio X2, but almost never use them anymore). I didn't expect the 6XX to supplant the 700, but couldn't resist getting the storied 650 for $200. And you never know, many people prefer the 650 to the 700 (indeed, saying anything good about the 700 on SBAF is, without exaggeration, heresy punishable by digital tar and feathering although there are plenty of people on Head-Fi who love them). I was anxious to hear the 650 at last and have listened to them exclusively over the last few days. They are a very good headphone and I enjoy listening to them; their greatest virtue, as I've often read, is the mid-range: vocals really stand out and are indeed wonderful and listening to them on the 6XX can be addictive.
However, in most other areas, the 700 is clearly superior. The soundstage is significantly wider, instruments are more accurately placed, and there is much more air around them. The 6XX's most surprising flaw is (at least to me) its comparative lack of bass. I'm not a basshead by any means; I never listen to hiphop or EDM (I mainly listen to almost every genre of rock, folk, and pop rock since the late "50s). However, I love to listen to bass guitar and bass sounds great on the 700, even if quantity could be a tad better. Unfortunately, on the 6XX bass is OK at best. On many songs It's often hard to pick out bass lines. (FWIW, I'm listening with an OTL amp that should be very favorable to the 6XX: for music, Tidal HiFi on my laptop>Schiit Eitr>Modi Multibit>Valhalla 2. For blu-rays and streaming video I use the same gear minus the Eitr.) And the comfort factor is significant as well. The 700 is the most comfortable headphone I have ever worn. The 6XX is...not. Out of the box, it is extremely uncomfortable, bordering on painful, because if its excessive clamping force. I'm aware of the fix and have applied it multiple times (and will continue to do so). This has gotten the 6XX from very uncomfortable to OK when first put on , but becoming moderately uncomfortable the longer I wear them.

MarloweI've done a ton of reading online which is pretty much consistent with what you are saying. Would those differences be explained the fact that the HD700 sells for $500 and the HD6xx is $200?
I have had a friends HD600 on loan for a while now and I am expecting the 6xx's to be slightly better. The price of the 6xx's is right for me. I'm also seriously considering a Garage1217 Kameleon to correct the lack of sub bass on the 6xx's.
If you don't want your 6xx's, I'm sure there are tons of people who are probably just itching to buy them off of you.

MarloweMarlowe I will have to chime back to you once I get mine tomorrow and they have some burn time. I myself have the HD700's already HD598's open and closed, the Philips X2 and jumped on the MD hifiman 4xx that ships next month. I personally did not like the 700's at first and had to use them for a period before I got the amazing sound I was expecting. At first they really didn't impress me over the 598's. I have the little dot 1+ with some very nice tubes, Schitt modi uber 2 and schitt lyr 2 amp with various tubes, and my favorite amp ifi micro iDSD Black label edition. With those I will be able to fine tune the sound various ways.

Squonk_GANope, no desire to sell them. Though I was hoping to like them even more than I do, they are nonetheless excellent headphones, their presentation of vocals is terrific, and they are a ridiculous steal for $200. l will be using them often. (Besides, what would I do with the $150 cable for them that I am awaiting from Ursine Audio?) I just think that on balance I like the 700s more and I'll likely be using them more often.
BTW, while merely comparing price is not a reliable indicator of quality, I don't think your price comparison is that accurate. The 6XX is sold for $200 by Massdrop by virtue of whatever deal they have with Sennheiser, but it is not a $200 headphone in quality; nothing else even close to that price is in the same league. It is identical in every way that matters with the 650, which still has a $500 MRSP on Sennheiser's website, though it is widely available for a bit over $300 (maybe less now that the 660S is out). The 700 had a $1,000 MRSP when introduced 6-7 years ago but is now officially $750 and widely available for less. I got mine last spring when the price on Amazon and B&H (which move in lockstep for Sennheiser products) briefly went down to $420, almost as ridiculous as $200 for the 6XX.
I'm not familiar with the Project Kameleon and Garage 17's website is vague and lacks even a picture. But it is apparently a form of EQ. You might want to consider the new Schiit Loki, an analog four band equalizer that I have been debating about buying. It is considerably cheaper (even more so since it works with any can without buying additional "filters" at $40 a shot). Also subjectively for me, Garage 17 products are plug ugly while the Loki matches and stacks with my Mimby and Eitr.

ruxc82Since posting this morning I have tried some new driver tubes in my Valhalla 2; I had the tubes 10 days ago but did not get the required adapters (which are apparently only available from Chinese vendors) until today. When this tube type was recommended in the Head-Fi Valhalla 2 tube rolling thread, Mike Moffat of Schiit posted that they were superior sounding to other tubes compatible with the Valhalla 2 (and the Lyr 2). My first impression was that they were more traditionally tubey sounding, and had somewhat more bass, than the stock tubes or the JJ E88Cs that I had been using. They clearly give the 6XX (as well as the 700s) a bass boost, I need to burn them in for a while.

MarloweYou are right. The HD 6xx, 600, and 650 are more or less reference headphones. They are good at providing accurate sound reproduction and excellent clarity while the HD 700 is good at providing a massive sound stage and the low end that the 600 series lacks. I haven't listened to the HD 700, but I have heard that they do sacrifice some clarity for their low end and sound stage though. With that said, I believe the HD6xx/650 are supposed to strike the balance between the 600 and 700. I guess it is just a matter of what kind of sound you prefer.
