bigmanbeardoThe Jotenheim with built in DAC pairs well with these cans, NFB-11, Magni 3/Asgard 2/Valhalla 2 with Modi Multibit. Sound is different for everyone and people prefer different amps., some light brighter, some like darker and warmer. Best is to try first and if you can't get from a place that allows you to refund if you're not satisfied.

bigmanbeardoI don't have mine yet so I can't say from experience what pairs well. I do want to mention that the heat from tube amps varies. I have the LD MK III and when I'm trying out different tubes, I can turn it off and immediately remove tubes without hurting or burning my fingers. This is after having it on for hours. They are hot but not too hot. I know this isn't the case for all tube amps but worth noting because tubes supposedly pair really well with the HD-6XX and I'm a fan of the tube sound.
If possible, I also recommend trying a few or purchase dacs/amps with good return policies so you can see what you really like. Everyone's ears/brains are different.

bigmanbeardoGet the NFB-11 which is like in the $300 range which would be my preference. I assume a majority people are pairing it with an O2/ODAC or schiit stack which is in the $200 range.

bigmanbeardoMy best recommendation for you is to narrow down your choices, then go to your local headphone store and audition some gear. Consensus is only good for narrowing down your choices, but is not a good guide for personal preference. Spending $800 on gear you have never heard will only lead to regret, what I mean is, you won't regret it immediately but after the honeymoon period wears off, you'll always be wondering whether there's something better for the same price you paid.
My experience, the HD6XX is best with a warm source. Many people describe these headphones as already warm, I think people are confusing between warm and dark. These headphones are in fact very neutral and a warm source will have really good synergy with its dark signature. That said, I think anything will bring out their beauty, it depends on how much beauty you want to bring out of them. I've got almost a $4k dac/amp running these, and I still can't say it brings out 100% of their beauty.
Schiit is usually a safe bet when you can't audition for what ever reason, their stuff is decent but doesn't excel at anything. IMO the Lyr is the best all rounder in the Schiit range. If you can audition, I highly recommend you to try out gear by Violectric, Aune and Woo. Audio-GD is nice too, but it's hard to audition unless you find one at a meet, they are really amazing for the price you pay but their main issue is QC.

JackulaFrom what I heard and from my own experience, Schiit have a worse QC than any other well known brands, even Audio-GD.

bigmanbeardoHi there. Here is my take as I'm in the same boat(Was a complete newbie until DarkVoice went live on drop) but I've done a bunch of research and which I've concluded on a few product. HD6XX imo would be best paired with a DarkVoice336SE AMP(With quality tubes of course!!!). Which is said to be quite good for high impedance headphone but lack at low impedance. The tubes are best paired with Tung-Sol mouse ears driver tube and Tung-Sol 7236 power tube(both each around $40-$50). The DAC that people recommended to be quite good with HD6XX in general is the Aune T1 MK3 SE DAC/AMP Combo which offers a "warmness" that HD6XX would definitely sound better from. Of course this is all from just my own opinion I've gathered(btw I bought those that I've mentioned) and I've never heard from any external source of DAC/AMP before so I will never know. I went all out and bought good audio cables as well as definitely a USB fan(lol) to cool the tube. Just received my DV336SE and the tubes get quite hot. I've learned that tube is the way to go for better audio. You can change sound signature with a simple tube change but on a solid state amp, you're stuck to changing the AMP which could cost hundreds to get better AMP for audio quality. Probably the same reason I actually wanted to get the AUNE T1 MK3 SE because it uses the "tube for the DAC", while the amp is solid state(which I'll use for low impedance headphones, it's a plus)

bigmanbeardoIf you're spending that much go to a stereo shop and try them out. You won't regret it. If you buy something online and spend that much, you may regret it.

If you want budget: schiit magni 3 and (if needed) add a modi 2 or sdac. OR aune x1s OR aune t1 se (mkiii) ≈ 170 to 220
Class a and more power: aune x7s and (if needed) add a modi 2 or sdac. ≈ 300
If you don't want budget: schiit jotunheim with added dac option. ≈ 500 (True balanced).
Now I have heard the nfb.11 and heard it is high quality, but it has a serious audio pop problem. Also massdrop now has the cavalli line and have not heard much of it yet.

bigmanbeardoHonestly, just get a schiit fulla. It's the best bang for your buck. For every $100 you spend after it, you'll have a significant decrease in bang/buck.

bigmanbeardoIf you want a tube amp buy bottlehead crack, for SS you can get a Jotunheim with a dac ($500). I personally use a Nuforce Ha-200 (and a lame Aune X1s) which sounds really good with this too. But I recommend the Jotenheim esp because you can buy a good dac and pair with it later. Skip portable gear unless you absolutely need portability. You're paying extra $$ for portability, remember.

bigmanbeardoAlso perhaps consider ifi iDSD Micro Silver or Black Label, great synergy with HD6XX, very versatile, more than enough power, might be able to find good deals used or black friday.

AndrewX58You're getting it slightly wrong, it all depends on how you see those amps, really.
It's not about whether 'tube amps' or 'solid state amps' are superior than another, it's about how WELL they're made. Tube ones are made to generate some harmonics (or overtones, whatever you call it) which MIGHT fit your sound taste (which you might presume tubes are better).
While solid state does not make any harmonics and it just produces the exact tone what the engineer were meant to.
Everyone has their preferences, as our human ears/brain are all different.

So I finally got in the drop last month and have been trying to do as much research as possible to get a suitable AMP or AMP/DAC combo I just can't seem to really get a straight answer considering most people are looking in the 100 dollar range. What AMP/DAC could I get to really bring out the beauty in these bad boys for anywhere from $300-600 range possibly stretch that to $800 but pretty set in the 300-600 range. Also I don't know about a tube amp, considering I have a small desk and wouldn't want the heat to melt my monitor.
