I just received my HD-6xx, and I’m pretty psyched about the sound right out of the box. The bass is deep and solid but not overdone. The highs are nicely extended, and the mids are right where they should be. In other words, I definitely enjoy the sound signature.
That said, there’s a bit of graininess and hardness to everything from about 1k and up. I certainly wouldn’t consider it anything resembling veiled, instead leaning towards slightly edgy. I’m sure this is exaggerated in my ears for two reasons: my main speaker system is classic Brit-fi (Monitor Audio Gold), which many mistake for rolled off because, although the treble is really extended and clear, it’s so smooth and open that it exhibits virtually none of the harshness and sizzle of many speakers. The second reason is that I just got an open box set of Audioquest Nighthawks (a total steal at $225), and these have many of the aforementioned Brit-fi characteristics.
I think many reviews of the Nighthawk really missed the boat, especially Zeos, who described them as a million miles from neutral, rolled-off, but fun to listen to. At least he got the last part right. They’re actually extended and clear and absolutely liquid.
Anyway, for those of you who you who are longtime 6XX owners, how many hours of break-in were necessary before they really deliver their true voice? I’m hoping to lose what sounds to me like unnatural grain and edge.
Thanks.

RandingoHaven't gotten my HD6XX yet so I can't speak for break-in required, but I think a lot of it depends on your source and amplification. If you're running a Schiit stack, they are known for their hard treble (comparatively speaking).
My own HD600 didn't require much break in at all, maybe 3 hours at the most. The two are quite similar but I believe the HD6XX should actually have a softer treble, that was my impression when I auditioned the HD650 a few years ago.
I'm quite familiar with the MAG sound, on my own headphone rig, the treble is definitely smoother than when I listened to the MAGs on Rotel amps.

JackulaThanks for the info. I’m running mine from a Chord Mojo, which is quite neutral and resolving. We’ll see how it goes over time with the 6XX. I’ve found few pieces of audio gear that don’t change over the first several dozen hours.
It’s nice to hear that someone else owns and appreciates the MAG. I power mine with a Sim Audio integrated. It has the advantage of having frequency response at least as extended as the speaker.
Thanks again for your input.

RandingoJust got mine. I have a pair of Grado PS500's and my partner has Grado SR325e's. The HD6XX sounds somewhere in-between them to me - more neutral and brighter than my PS500's, but nowhere near as harsh and thumpy as the 325e's.
They're wonderfully bright, fairly neutral sounding, deep bass extension without a bass hump. And yes, I'm getting that slight treble grain that you mentioned. Surprising - given all the hubbub abut the Sennheiser Veil, I never expected them to sound brighter than Grados. Although I guess the PS500's are the darkest of them all.
TLDR I really like how they sound.
