A QUESTION TO THE EXPERIENCED :D If you really have sth to say out of your exper, please do. Which one of these three would you buy and why? This Massdrop O2 + SDAC (I think like $160 shipped) Schiit Fulla 2 ($125 shipped) Feixiang DAC-X6 - not the most attractive name, but heard some good stuff, overall mixed reviews. ($65 shipped) I'll be using the HD6XX for everything, high-high quality classical, pop, ranging from lossless to 128kbps, movies and whatever else is needed. I'll be using my MacBook Pro, so the DAC is not as bad as some windows based laptops, from what I understand. So, if the difference is substantial I can splurge, but since I am just a random Joe, I don't think I will notice it, without, and maybe even after, some continuous A/B testing. If you think otherwise, let me know. So, yeah, I think that's all. Personally, I would prefer the Fulla 2, since it's readily available at any given point of time, unlike the SDAC combo (I know about the JDL and Mayflower ones, but they're like 279) and since it's more or less portable, unlike both of these. But, I'm not a house, I can move, if something is really worth it. Someone called SSL, a highly regarded individual on linustechtips forum as I understand, says the O2 would be the bottleneck for the 650s (read 6XXs), would you agree? Will the Fulla 2 provide enough volume and range, I think it's called, for the 6xx? If you could share some of your knowledge and advice, it would be much appreciated.

BeseyYou missed the mayflower arc, since it was black friday here in the us it was $200.
If the mic port is useless to you then you can save some money and get the o2 + sdac all in one on massdrop for 150 if they drop it again.
The schiit fulla 2 distorts when the volume is more than like %60, it can power most things, unless you get one cheap on ebay I rather you get a magni 3 amp with a dac such as the sdac.
If you want to spend $100 more then get a sdac and a aune x7s. If you spend anymore then you can start considering things like the schiit jotunheim or tube amps.

Z0d1AcThanks for the input, Zod1Ac. At 60% of Fulla 2, how loud would the headphones be? If I were to buy the Magni 3 annnnd a DAC, I would think the price would go higher than the SDAC combo, and 160-ish is really as high as I'm wiling to go. Have you had any experience with the DAC of any Mac? If I were to go bare Magni 3, would the sound be comparable to the SDAC combo?

BeseyIf you wacth the z review on youtube, he got to like %40 with fidelio x2 and %60 on k7xx with the fulla 2. Did not test 650, but I assume you need more than the k7xx.
If you are having hissing or static you want to isolate the sound and a external dac will help with that and make sure your amp is getting clean signal. I would probably rather get a better amp such as a magni 3 then a schit fulla 2.
There is the aune x1s on massdrop right now and I bought that. Should be more clean than a fulla 2 and better dac and I know it can handle 6xx enough. I also bought another amp/dac tube off ebay and I will be getting that sooner.

BeseyI'd get an o2 or a magni 3 and let the Mac do the D/A work. If you hear distortions or audio artefacts, buy a SDAC later.

Horse_RotorvatorI cancelled my order on the aune x1s, they have the new 6th generation out now, does not look much different, but I already have a amp/dac coming so ya. Also not sure why they are listing this aune x1s on massdrop as 80mw and not the correct 200mw.
Just buy a magni 3 and be happy with that. Add a sdac later.

Z0d1AcI have actually found that the amp is the most important aspect of my audio set up. Without it I can't drive my more demanding headphones at all. So frankly if you're going to splurge, splurge on a good amp. I have a macbook pro as well and the DAC is serviceable but it is noticeably inferior for cleanliness and general quality compared to most external solutions I have tried.

BeseyJust get the Massdrop SDAC/O2 combo and stop worrying. Just listen to the music with your HD6xx

BeseyGet the Fulla, you can return it if you don't like it minus a tiny fee. These are all incredibly entry level devices, I don't think it's worth agonizing over minute differences in sound quality, they're all going to be bottlenecks to the headphones.

MFillmoreThanks for the reply. Noticeable to audiophiles' God-gifted ears, or to usual people too? :D

RockyMountainsThanks for the reply. Yep, I agree that all of these are entry level options. But I'm sure you would agree, at almost any price point, one would like to get the best for the price. So, I'm here :) And for an experienced audiophile these might not be worth the hassle, for a novice like myself, it still is a consideration.

BeseyIt's definitely noticeable to the average person, particularly in the department of dynamic range and overall "resolution". My schiit modi 2 and dragonfly red and centrance dacport slim just sound deeper and clearer. But the macbook pro is not as bad as a run of the mill cell phone. For dynamic range it really will be very noticeable.

BeseyEither get the cheapest one (for price:performance, lower price usually gives the better ratio) or get the Fulla 2 as a trial and return it if you find it's not 'good enough'. I've got one sitting on my desk now, it's tiny form factor is much appreciated, and the big volume knob is surprisingly satisfying :)

BeseySorry if I was too direct in my recommendation. Anyways, if the O2/SDAC unit comes back on Massdrop, I think it is your best bet, more powerful than the Frulla and most probably at least equal if not better sounding than the Schiit Products. And at a very good price 149$. I’m sure that the Magni 3 at 99$ is also worth considering, but you will not be able to get a 50$ DAC to accompany it for a total budget equal to the O2/SDAC offer at 149$. If you want the Magni 3, I would probably suggest to get the SDAC when it comes back at 79$ to accompany it.

RockyMountainsYep, I like the form factor and overall design. But the return thing, since I'm not even on your continent, with the cheapest one-way shipping of ~23$, and the slight deduction, aaand the way back to them if need be, it's gonna be a pretty penny in the end :D But good advice otherwise. Thanks

tessierpgNot too direct at all, just no explanation as to why would I/you do that. Thanks for the reply. Wait wait wait, the SDAC to go with the Magni 3, for 79$ is only SDAC right? Is it like Massdrop-made? Cause I haven't seen that one. The options you're suggesting are pretty nice.

BeseyThank you all guys. I'd most probably be considering the O2/SDAC combo, if it comes. Or the Magni 3 for a while, since it's more important than the dedicated DAC for now, and then get one, if I'd want to up my DAC game. But the Fulla is nice for portability arghhh. Gotta get my priorities straight. Anyways, thanks again :D
