For someone not using a DAC or a tube amp, not that far down the rabbit hole yet, is there achievable (electronically or sonically or physically) value to upgrading to the HD-6xx? I'm using Klipsch S4A earbuds and Sony MDR-V6 monitors for radio and podcasts, mostly from a iPhone.

c0rneliusDefinitely.
The 6XXs definitely do benefit when they're plugged into an AMP, but that shouldn't throw you off buying them. You can drive them straight out of your phone or desktop/laptop, and they will still sound better than what you have now. You should consider getting them now, and purchasing an AMP later on instead of the opposite.

BlueCrownedNo worries then :) think of the 6XX’s as an investmeant. Down the road, you can always pick up a $100 amp to Suit your needs, like the fulla 2, magni, or O2 amp. Even a used amp would work. Just make sure they run up to 300ohm Headphones. i don’t have personal experience without an amp though. I’ll post about It when mine come in.

JustinWowWell, I won't be buying any $200 headphones any time soon either lol, I'm just interested because of all the hype surrounding these.

BlueCrownedSure thing. They’re just a pretty HD650. Sennheiser 558 and 598’s can be had on sale for a friendlier price.

JustinWowGood to know for the far off day when I'm ready to jump into the audiophile scene. Going to take me a while to recover from the keyboard I think... one hobby at a time.

Fai9al023Thanks! That's what I was hoping to hear.
Would this be a similar scenario if I plugged them into the headphone jack in my phono receiver? It's a very basic yamaha av receiver, currently piping a turntable into floor speakers.
