Hi Everyone, I am really undecided whether to get these or the AKG K712 Pro? I have pretty much narrowed it down to these 2 in terms of price budget, I cannot find any shops that I can try them in my area, anyone who has both can share? I will use this purely for music and occasional movies, no gaming, I do have an headphone amp. thanks.

zigesgoI am interested in the same, but at the same time turned of by the 4 months waiting time for the HD6xx. Otherwise I would have to pay ~330€ for the HD650 or 230€ for the K712.

zigesgoMy own preferences aside, the K712's in comparison have a much larger soundstage, is brighter and faster sounding. The HD6XX's are dark sounding headphones and slow decay makes them intimate and romantic sounding (great for jazz and acoustic). Both require a good source and amplification to sound their best. The AKG's are amp finicky, they work best with an amp that is warm and smooth like the Violectrics while the HD6XX needs a lot of voltage so amps with high output impedance work best with them i.e. a OTL tube amp like the Crack.

zigesgoWell, if you're like me, you will work your way through these various headphones thinking they are really great. Then one day you will hear a pair of Beyerdynamics and have your OMG moment. It's like opening a dirty window and letting all the bright sunlight in. You will wonder why such a fuss was made over poor headphones like the HD 6XX series. The clarity and definition will astound you and you will put all your other stuff up for sale and keep the Beyers (and yes, live happily ever after).

KJ741NWell I have just sold DT880s because the highs and the overall brightness was too much for my taste. I assume the K712 will be a good middle ground between the brighter Beyerdynamic and the darker HD650.

KJ741NWhich Beyer? The 770 (32 version) is probably the most similar to it considering only the overall sound signature, but it's much less refined. Of all the other Beyers I've listened to, 880's have stiff highs, 990's have recessed mids, then there's the T1 and 1990 and neither of these have the same euphonics as a HD650. I can see why someone could prefer a 1990 or T1 over the HD650, but I can't see how someone could prefer a 770, 880 or 990 to a HD650 paired with high-end source and amplification.

JackulaAgreed. The 712s are different from the 650s. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, it really depends on what you want. Personally I am not a Beyerdynamics fan, too treble heavy for my tastes overall.

JackulaIs there a warm headphone amp (no DAC), for max 200€?

JackulaI just got my HD-6XX 'phones. Comparing them to a pair of Fostex T50RP (with MrSpeakers Alpha leather cushions) and to a pair of Sony MDR-7506 I've had forever, I don't find the HD-6XX dark at all. I use an Objective2 headphone amp, which has very low output impedance (well under 1 ohm). I used to use a pair of HD-580 'phones in a recording studio, for checking mixes and mastering. I found those to be laid back and mellow sounding, but these HD-6XX 'phones are very different. I find these to be bright, airy, 'fast', very clear, with punchy bass. Piano attacks and drums are really quick and punchy, very detailed. I don't hear any 'veil' or anything sleepy or mellow sounding. Could it be that people are listening to these HD-6XX 'phones through amps that aren't capable of driving them well? I'm not sure I'd like the HD-6XX to be any brighter than they are. I'm asking because my experience is so widely different from others I'm reading. Thanks.
PS - I also used to have a pair of 1980s vintage AKG K240 Monitor (the 600 ohm version). Those sounded a bit like these HD-6XX but I think were a little 'slower' sounding, more of a mellow edge to things. But they would have been playing through the headphone jack on a Sony SACD player, so maybe this is not a valid comparison.

rongonAll headphones will be veiled when not driven properly, the HD6XX is no exception. The HD6XX has newer silver screens, these screens are more rigid in structure which alleviates the "veil" issue of older HD650s. But - they definitely do still have a veil, like you said they are laid back, which is a sign of the veil and their overall darkness.
