I currently use a set of beyerdynamic dt990's 32 ohm...Looking to upgrade these.. Would anyone with experience consider these MD/sennheiser HD 6xx an actual/significant upgrade? Or would it just be more or so comparable? Btw, i love the 990's, not disappointed in them at all, just wanting to climb the chain in quality, and am nervous something in this price range will only be a similiar replacement, rather than an improvement.. Have this same question/concern about the MD/HifiMan h4xx too if anyone has an opinion on that.
Thanks!

Ceedee21The 32 ohm version of the DT 880 is the worst version so the HD6xx would be a moderate improvement on a technical level, however its got a quite different sound signature from the DT 880. It will sound midbassier and treble recessed compared to the 880.
The Hifiman 4xx (assuming its based on a 400i)will be closer to the 880 in terms of sound signature. It wouldnt be a huge upgrade though, mostly less distortion in the bass. Both of them will require you to buy a amp if you dont have one (assuming you dont since you got the 32ohm Dt880).

VishmawThanks for the insight (side note.. I am an idiot and for some reason put 880's.. My cans are actually the 990's)..not sure the sennheiser sound is what id be looking for then..i do have a pair of senn pxc450's and i hate the sound, but just attributed that to open back vs closed..I actually have had my sights set on the audio technica ath-r70x and I definitely plan on using an amp, already use a topping nx3 on the 990's.. It's nothing fancy but definitely helped.. Bought the 32 ohm thinking 'great! No amp needed!' And then was left disappointed in the lack of umph they had powered just by my phone.. Definitely regretted going with the 32 ohm version after that lol

Ceedee21My opinion, owning both the HD6XX and HE-4XX, is that the HE-4XX is unimpressive. If you want the planar sound, I'd say save your money and move up the chain. Compared to a 990, the 6XX is probably a worthwhile step up, the 4XX is probably still a step up, but not a huge one.
That said, as Vishmaw said (regarding the 880, but still true with the 990), these have a different sound. I wouldn't call the treble recessed by any means (I know he didn't actually call it recessed, but the word seems to strike fear into some). The 880 is known for being hot, and the 990 is supposedly even hotter up top. These are a lot more laid back up top than either will be, especially yours, but I don't find them lacking in any capacity. The midbass is pretty forward, and does lend itself to some bloom, but not a smeared and mushy bloom. It's more that it's easily noticeable coming from a faster planar driver that doesn't do it.
No idea on the R70X, but I can't really recommend the HE-4XX myself. Of the two I have, the HD6XX is the easy choice.

ProfessorPatThanks! I was, thinking that about the he4xx .. Knowing what planars typically cost, the price point of the 4xx and just the original h400i definitely leaves you questioning what you are really getting... I think that scraps that.. Seems counterproductive to 'upgrade' to something seriously entry level, even if the engineering is, all said and done, better.
