Just putting my two cents here. I've had the HD 6xx for a month or so, after I finally got a chance to purchase them over the summer, after tragically missing the first drop, I have to say I was a bit disappointed at first. Out of the box they were not comfortable on my larger than average head and required lots of finagling to make them semi-wearable. Also, at the time I did not have a headphone amp powerful enough to accompany the 6xx. Today, that all changed and I received my Schiit Magni 3. Before, it was like my cans were running on 9 year old batteries, now it's like they are at full charge. The difference is fantastic and absolutely worth the $99 Schiit asks for their technology. I came from using the Phillips SHP 9500's (Zeos Fanboy) and my young aspiring audiophile ears could not detect much of a difference. Now the difference is night and day, even to a beginner like myself. If you're going to buy these and have a large head and/or no amp, you have to - I can't stress this enough - adjust the metal bands + buy the amp, or any equivalent amp. If not, don't bother buying them, just buy the 9500's and I guess you can light the extra $250 (300-50) on fire or something. It's worth it. Don't be silly, pull out that card and make the best decision you've made in...years? Gotta be.

KizaruHonestly, haven't put the 9500's on since I got the amp but just for a moment. They sound louder but not necessarily "better." I'm sure there is a difference, just not as noticeable as with the 6xx's.

Sam_PippinBehold the difference that proper amplification makes!
I'm glad there's another person who has caught on to that. Maybe now I won't be the only person arguing with the "my phone is loud enough" crowd...

Sam_PippinYou only need an amp? I was thinking about getting the Mayflower ARC cos it has both amp and dac. But if amp is enough, maybe I'm gonna use that money to get a better amp (like the Vali or st).

cbkhanhDAC goes without saying and presumes you're using a digital source. You don't need one if you're listening to an analog source. If you're using a digital source, you typically already have one.
You can usually benefit from an upgraded one, but that's an entirely different conversation.

HeeftyMy mobo is shit though (a cheap B250 I think). I probably gonna need an upgraded dac.

cbkhanh I am using a micca Origen + as a dac. However, as far as best bang for you’re buck on increase in sound quality, as the Origen andMagni 3 cost the same, I would choose the amp.

cbkhanhIf you're really interested in the Vali, a Vali 2 and Modi 2 would be the same price as the ARC. I don't know how significant the "improvements" in the Uber are for your sound, but the standard Modi 2 will crush your mobo dac (not saying the ARC won't as well... but I know nothing about it outside of the price). My Z270 board that brags about how great its audio is sounds like crap...
If you're going from no amp though, providing proper power to these is going to make the biggest single bit of difference. A better DAC or amp after the fact will refine things a lot, but going from under-powered to properly fed is going to be a massive difference.

ProfessorPatThanks guys for your help. I still prefer something in one packet though. 2 blocks of dac and amp seem like a lot to place on my table :D

cbkhanhIf you went with the Schiit, they stack on top of each other just fine. More cables still, but not really any more space unless you’re vertically limited. Not trying to say it’s th way to go, but if space is an issue, they won’t take up much more going one on top of the other.
A single box solution is nice though for space and knowing they’ll work together well. And anything with any sort of positive reputation should be a nice step up from motherboard audio. Good luck with whatever you settle on.
