Neblin7I have both. My HD6XX are S/N 9654 and the HD4XX S/N is 1894. It's hard to qualify the differences between the HE4XX and the HD6XX. The best definition is that the HE4XX sounds thinner and yet requires more power, but they lack the fluidity and presence of the HD6XX. The HD6XX clamp harder and might be uncomfortable for those with larger head. In my case it's hard for me to think on preferring the HE4XX over the HD6XX and contrary to some opinions, they are vastly different in terms of sound quality or comfort.
I also have a pair of HD600 and the HD6XX are very similar in sound the HD6XX sounds a bit more fluid but the difference is really negligible. However, the headband of the HD600 is better and at least in my case, they are more comfortable to wear.

CatskinnerConcur with your opinion on the HE4XX, however the difference between the HD600 and HD6XX is pretty significant, but you'll need good partnering gear to get those differences.
You can see my comparison review here: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-sennheiser-hd6xx/talk/1909478
Tl:Dr - the HD600 is the superior headphone on entry gear. HD6XX is the winner on high end gear.

Neblin7Totally different sound signature mate. HE4XX have super exaggerated highs and HD6XX have them tuned down.

Neblin7I'm also thinking about picking up the Darkvoice tube amp. Thanks for all the info that you guys provided with your replies. I prefer headphones that do not color the sound very much so I believe I'll be picking up a pair of these Sennheiser's. I know from reading that the Darkvoice will add some warmth to the headphones. With that said, will Sennheiser HD6XX's gain much from adding an headphone amp into the mix or can they be driven really well without an amp?

Neblin7Bit of a moot point since the HE4XX drop is currently inactive. I have heard that tubes and planars don't work well together, so the Sennheiser would be the better option for you. I have the HE4XXs paired with a solid state amp (Magni 3) and I'm perfectly happy with that set up. I can run them without an amp (with my DAP on high gain mode). However to get the most out of them you really need a headphone amp and I would imagine the HD6XXs would be the same.
