Alright I've been using these for a bit over a month with a Creative Soundblaster E5 primarily, both for music and gaming. I've actually just ordered the Massdrop Modmic as well, because why not... I'm not an audiophile by any stretch, so take this with a grain of salt.
Impressions: I didn't know. I just didn't know. I normally use a set of older Beats buds for music listening at work. They were a gift and they suited my needs, I wasn't going to complain. I also was using Astro A40's for gaming until I got my PC37x's. There's going to be an obvious jump between the two disparate types of headphones, but holy goodness, I wasn't expecting this.
The sound-stage (which again, I had no idea what that even was, I know nothing) is incredible. Hearing footfalls, being able to pinpoint location based on sound alone, is pretty wild. I normally use the Massdrop x Sennheiser PC37x for gaming and I thought those were an upgrade over my A40's... These are something else entirely. For gaming, the sound and comfort is increased over the PC37x to a degree that at first is like, yeah, it's different. But switching between them really increases that disparity. I LOVE my PC37x's, but the 6xx is just so much cleaner and... Brighter, I guess?
Let me state this again for clarity: I am not an audiophile. I have begun to dabble, but by no means do I know what I'm doing or talking about.
The crisp audio when gaming is one thing, but listening to music is so vibrant and beautiful. I listen to a lot of metal and electronica, but I throw some classical and classic rock into the mix, as well as some experimental stuff from time to time. Listening to Yo Yo Ma's cello concertos by Bach is one of my go-to, I-need-to-relax-and-breathe albums, and these have taken that to another level. Part of that is the amp, I am sure, because they need to be driven by something with a bit more oomph. Straight out of my phone the quality isn't bad, but the volume tops out quickly and you will crave more. The detail, the depth of the sound, is just emotionally different. You can hear the bow on the strings. You can hear hints of the artists breathing. You can hear the emotion that he puts into his music coming through into your ears. It's life-changing if you're moved by music, but if you aren't you're probably not considering the dollar amount anyway.
They're not as bassy as I'd like for some of the more beat-driven music I listen to, but it still sounds amazing. These aren't a bass head can, so I wasn't expecting them to vibrate my head, but that doesn't mean they aren't still stellar. They are, they're amazing without being overwhelmed by bass. I'd go so far as to say that they have effectively changed the way I listen to different types of music.
Some things I would like to see would be the inclusion of a rigid zippered carrying case instead of the giant box they ship in, but that's only because I transport them to and from work every once in a while. Because my work arrangement has changed, I probably wont actually be using them at work any more; they are open-back and they are DEFINITELY audible to those around you. If you're in an open office and you care about your colleagues, these aren't going to work for you very well. I tried them out and got completely lost in my music and my work and looked up to see my coworkers staring at me. They're LOUD.
Let's recap: I'm in love. I know jack shit about audio, but my music collection is mostly FLAC. I don't have a big amp setup, but what I have works perfectly well for my uses. They're beautiful and comfortable and apparently pretty widely modded, but I haven't gone near that (yet). If you're looking to take the plunge, you won't be sad. They're pretty to look at, the construction is great, the sound is phenomenal, and I could not be happier.
