What would be a good portable Dac/Amp to use with my HD6xx and Sony Xperia 1 V cell phone?
I am new to this hobby. I purchased a HD6XX and plan to use it with my Sony Xperia 1 V cell phone, that has a 3.5mm jack. I was wondering if I needed a portable dac/amp or just a portable amp and if so what would one recommend? Any assistance one could provide, would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Haz

Thank you for your patience! Updated 11/27: As of today over 5,800 headphones have shipped, which is about 63% of the drop. We are expecting another batch from Sennheiser to arrive next week. I ordered my HD6XX on Jul 29, 2017.
Not quite sure from your shipping post as to where I sit as I am included within your mentioned dates?
Am I lucky enough to be up next for shipping? Can I start becoming excited?!
Thanks for leeting me know

Though if it's FedEx "Smart"Post then that can vary since they pretty much put packages on after regular speed shipments are loaded, so if there isn't much space on the trucks, you wait longer. I kind of wish places would use UPS SurePost more since now after a few years it's pretty much ground service plus an extra day, the day you'd normally get it on ground, the USPS would get it for the handoff and deliver it the next day. FedEx must give better rates on smartpost than UPS does on surepost or else smartpost would be dead.
- Order on 29 June 2017 - Shipped out from New Jersey on 18 Nov - Received at Ezbuy's warehouse at Beaverton, Oregon on 28 Nov ( Using FedEx SmartPost) - Arrived at Singapore on 3 Dec - Delivered to my selected Ezcollect point on 4 Dec - Collected my long-awaited HD6XX on 4 Dec
For those who wants to purchase the HD6XX but living in Asia, you can consider using a forwarder shipping company to ship your item to your country.
Overall, I spend a total of SGD $302 (USD 224) to have the HD6XX, including forwarding charges.
Still waiting for a notification ... Safe to assume they haven't shipped yet.
Hopefully will get here before Christmas.
For those still waiting, ordered on July 26th and received it today (Dec. 7th)
Looks like this is the final pulse of july orders.
My shipping is DHL to Canada, says tracking number is getting no results, same for you?
I have fedex tracking that isn't live yet.
The email might be a good way of determining the approximate place in line.
BAD NEWS... It's coming on DHL, the worlds worst shipping company. Pray for my headphones people. :(
Thank you Massdrop!!!
Let's hope to receive them without any problem with customs :S
With a bit of luck I will be a happy new owner of the amazing Sennheiser HD 6XX just for Christmas. Thank you Massdrop! :)
What a fabulous email to receive. July to December is a very long time, but when I pay for them to get through Customs (savages....), are delivered into my loving hands....(sounds like a new child coming into the family!) Opened, inspected to make sure all looks well made, cables have a solid connection etc etc as I would expect from Sennheiser plus good quality control and then hook them up to my Jot....At that point, The order will be complete lol!
Good luck to everyone else...Keep us updated :)
Anyone else in Ontario, Canada with their headphones coming on DHL? I just wanna know if I'm sharing this torture with anyone else.
- Cheers.

Edit: I should add in that it really only matters if you have amazeball rips and not just regular MP3 320 rips.
2.5 days to drive 1 hour and 20 minutes...talk about underachieving...
The USPS rep was pretty helpful. He told me if I needed to call in again just say you want to file a complaint (even if you aren't). The call will get routed to a queue that has a 5-10min SLA.
Someone from UAE had his package waiting in Germany for 14 days before they appeared in Dubai.
I find there to be very very weak bass and almost no punch in a kickdrum. It's to the point where I fear I am doing something wrong but I can't think what.
I'm running a Schiit Jotunheim with the balanced DAC module with with a balanced XLR cable, made sure we are set to hi gain ... and yet the bass is VERY VERY underwhelming compared to the M-100s.
I just wanted to know your take when you have your pair to compare.
Cheers.
So I got my pair today and I need some input. I know that because of all the wait that I will have overhyped the expectations a bit. But I find myself VERY underwhelmed.
The main problem that I perceive is that these headphones seem so have very weak bass and also very weak punch/clarity on something like a kickdrum to me. I tend to like to listen to Ethereal Techno type stuff. For example check out music from "Tale of Us".
I am running a Schiit Jotunheim with the DAC module. A balanced XLR cable. I have made sure that the amp is set to high gain. Strictly WAV files.
Is this just what I should expect from these headphones? I have upgraded from V-Moda M100s ... and while I understand that the HD6XX is an open pair of cans compared to the M100s being mostly closed. It's an extremely significant change/loss in the amount of bass.
I suppose this is my first pair of "audiophile" headphones but I am just so shocked. I also know that they probably need about 100 hours of play to break in but man oh man.
Am I doing something wrong? Have I set something up incorrectly?
Perhaps a silly question but if I am using the Jotunheim and the source for my music is my computer by way of USB using the DAC module, the unit is still using the amp right? I mean, I assume it is because I can hear a difference with high and low gain settings.
I'm just very confused and would welcome advice.
Thank you!!!
My package arrived at Frankfurt on Dec. 9. Since then there were no updates before yesterday evening Dec. 19. Now my package is in Rodgau which is like 25 km away from Frankfurt. I guess that's ... progress.
At least I know something is happening but clearly I won't get my HD6XX by the Christmas. It's pretty amazing how much time has been wasted. Two days from US to Germany, 10 days to transfer 25 km within Germany.
I assumed that package would go through customs only at the final destination country, which in my case is Finland. But maybe there's some customs clearance also when the package enters EU.
In 2 days, it'll be 2 weeks since my order shipped, and it still looks like i'm nowhere near getting it. 2 weeks is supposed to be the upper limit for this shipping.
What infuriates me even more is the lack of tracking updates, I have no idea if it's just sitting in the same place, or if they aren't bothering to report its location.
I am fine with waiting months after a drop, so that the product can be manufactured, but it's not acceptable for the shipping to be this ridiculous.
It's been a poor first experience with Massdrop for me.
That 7 hour drive (hamburg to copenhagen) somehow took 3 days, and so 2 days ago it arrived at my local distribution center, where it still lays. Never seen such absurd shipping times.

However, after just a few hours listening to the HD 6XX I can say that I absolutely LOVE them! And I could list all of the reasons why, but I will try to stick to your concern. I admit that at first I heard them a bit bass shy, but let's also keep in mind that my other two references are on the bassy side of sound and also both are closed-back (although the Z7 should fit more in the semi-open type). Taking all of that in consideration I still consider that the HD 6XX are incredibly good in reproducing a natural and balanced sound in all departments.
The way I see it is that liking and loving these headphones it's somewhat an acquired taste, especially if the music type you listen to is bass heavy. For example, so far I prefer to listen to Daft Punk's Random Access Memories or Katy Perry's Witness on my MDR-Z7. I absolutely love how Katatonia's The Fall of Hearts and Lunatic Soul's Fractured sound in my Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 But then I find myself enjoying Big Big Train's Second Brightest Star and Porcupine Tree's In Absentia more with the HD 6XX due to its uber clarity and overall tonal balance.
My recommendation is for you to give them more time; they are definitely a worth pair of headphones! It's possible that you are just so used to the V-shaped sound from your V-Moda (no pun intended). Ultimately, if you are planning on keeping both, I would suggest you to use them with a music genre that suits the headphones and YOU the most.
But I was trying to address Hypnautica 's concern as he felt that these cans should provide more bass than the one he was hearing. That's where I guess a bit of background is needed, especially if someone is coming from a bass-oriented pair of headphones like the V-Moda's in his case or the Momentum 2.0 in mine.
Thank you for sharing the information about Parametric EQ, I've come to enjoy music the way it was recorded, without additional EQ but might as well give it a chance in the future.
I listen to Rock (new and old), Pop and Electro but i also use them for Netflix and gaming.
I do have a good creative sound card in my PC that amps up to 600ohm headphones.
Now, would you enjoy the HD 6XX? my immediate answer would be: Absolutely! Being the case that you already know and love Sennheiser's sound signature it will please your ears to have an upgraded version from the Momentum 2.0 in many departments, like clarity, separation, soundstage and accuracy, just to name a few.
Yes, the Momentum 2.0 will have more of a punchy bass due to it's closed back nature, but the HD 6XX are in no way behind. It's just that the bass you will hear from the HD 6XX will be more natural and precise (like if the bass on the Momentum 2.0 was not precise enough already).
And I could really go on with the many things I love about these 2 headphones but ultimately I can tell you that I recommend the HD 6XX as a true high-end product, I'm just amazed by how good these headphones sound, and I'm pretty sure that you would think the same if you end up getting them.
i listen mostly to rock and all of it's various flavors and derivatives myself, they are great for this.
Its all nice having lowered prices, but its all ruined by absurd shipping times. Why choose the cheapest courier? People need options :(
Massdrop and it's employees have zero control over ANYTHING once the package has landed in customs.
Massdrop can't control tariffs, they can't control import fees or taxes, they can't control how long it takes.
complaining to Massdrop about this sort of thing is asinine. i feel bad for you guys and wish that's not the way things were and it would be nice if massdrop could help you but they can't and asking for help on some of this stuff is kinda stupid.
your shipping time is likely being held up by customs, it's not like Massdrop decided to ship your headphones via donkey with water wings so that it would take 4 months to get there across the Atlantic. paying more for faster shipping just means that it would get to customs quicker and still sit there for a period of dam near 4 months.
.....why do i even have to say any of this? it's kinda dumb to be blaming Massdrop for any of this.
It didnt take 4 months to transfer shipment across Atlantic. It took exactly one day. Shipped 7.12. In Germany 8.12. Of course its DHL's fault that they didnt care to move it for the next month, but at the same time part of it is Massdrop's responsibility, was anyone given any other choice? And i dont want hear any BS they were held at customs or something. What, when its in EU it had to wait in 5 different facilities to clear customs? All the import tax and VAT had to be paid only after they checked it out at local customs in my country.
Some people just seem to missing the point what really angers peoples. Its not Massdrop's policy, its that shipping and its updates make no sense what so ever.
yes, exactly that.
we get your point, but it's wrong, maybe if everyone is trying to tell you something you should listen no?
if you google your problem you will see hundreds if not thousands of people having the same issue, the only difference is they are blaming customs and not DHL or Massdrop. I'm sure DHL would love to just deliver the package straight to your door, every time they touch the package just adds more cost on their end.
785,000 results for the problem you are having, again a VERY common problem that has nothing to do with massdrop or DHL. https://www.google.com/search?q=package+stuck+in+german+customs&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b
