I know this post is gonna get lost in this dicussion, but I wanted to give my impressions after a couple weeks with the Schiit stack, Magni 3 and Modi Multibit. I have probably never heard anything so great, and such a joy to listen to. The Multibit was worth it in my eyes, though my 2015 macbook pro dac did a perfectly fine job. I expected more of a difference, but If I ever get Super High-end headphones I might be more glad I have the Stack one day. Buy these headphones and consider a tube amp instead of something like the Schiit Stack if you really want a warm more bassy sound.

HelpbotTotally agree. MBP dacs are pretty good and the schiit stack wouldn't bring much of a difference at all.

Mark_MYep, I would say try it with your MBP first. If you can't drive it loud enough get an amp. For me my mac drives my 6xx plenty loud and I don't use my schiit stack much these days.

lp640v12Hmm okay. Well I do have a Micca Origen+ DAC/amp which I'm using with my 598s right now.

HelpbotYou know, I have to completely agree with this. Firstly that a DAC isn't really needed when using Apple gear. Secondly and perhaps most of all, that these cans would sound at their absolute best with tubes. While I don't have a tube amp, I do own an excellent vintage power amp that has that tube sound and I love the bass impact with these cans. I wouldn't call myself a bass head but I have another portable headphone amp (O2) and while crisp sounding, it's just not the same, not by any stretch of the imagination.

MarcSpenceYea, it's my first and only one right now. I love it, don't get me wrong. However I think that if the 6xx is primary way of listening to music you probably won't enjoy it much more than a tube if I'm understanding how it colors the sound right. The modi multibit can be pretty harsh if the recording isn't 320kbps as i found when i realized my Spotify wasn't set to high quality.
Honestly if your curiousity won't be sated by online discussions and you don't mind paying a 15% restocking fee you should just try it. I have heard things on recordings I have never heard before very distinctly such has very distant vocals mixed into tracks. When listening to classical recordings on my 6xx I feel almost like I'm at the studio or hall which it was recorded in. If you had to ask me if it's worth 270 bucks?... That depends if you want to get lost in the details.

HelpbotI have a Schiit multibit + APPJ 1502A (first MD purchase, love it) at Work compared to a used Magni 2 at Home, with a broken gain switch I got for $60 on Amazon plugged straight into a MB Pro . Two very different setups but both sound very good. I realized that in order for the Multibit to sound better the source and recording needed to be better, and in some cases, no matter how high a bitrate, these songs will just never sound "better" on Anything, including the Multibit, because the initial recording was garbage.
Also I'm a streamer. Spotify, Google Play, Amazon etc. I don't have the time, nor the library to play all the music I listen to. So I stream and in a streamers case the Amp is more important. So if you're streaming from a MBP, or a PC that sounds decent, spend more on an amp first, you'll probably Like what you hear.
But I'd start with a solid state amp. At $99 the magni 3 is pretty hard to beat. If you can get a used Magni 2 like I did from eBay or else where for $60 what's to loose? You'll at least see what I'm talking about and can decide what's more important for your case.
