Would the 6XX have more bass than the 598s? Cause I wouldn't want any more then that. The 598s are pretty good allrounders.

I don't find the 598s muddy. But I'm not sure what is meant by "extension" in this case.

Mark_MIt goes deeper in frequency while not losing as much amplitude. If you like listening to electronic music you will often have very deep frequencies (20-40 Hz) that are inaudible with "normal" headphones. The HD 6XX does a fine job with this,

HortenI mainly listen to classic rock/pop, jazz, blues, classical, and movie scores.

Mark_MIt was just an explanation of the term "extension". Having a headphone perform well in the low frequencies is obviously a good thing for any sort of music.

Mark_MI think I could answer this one for you since I own both and have listened to them quite extensively. 6xx is superior to 598s in all the areas except sound stage. 598s have a wider sound stage but that doesn't mean 6xx doesn't have sound stage either. Compared to the 598s they have a narrower sound stage. That's not bad either I love my 6xxs even more than the 598s. I was wondering how would they improve much on the 598s since it's already pretty good. But listening to 598s and 6xx back to back I felt the 598s were just so slightly out of focus/less detailed. The bass on 6xx is just the way I would like and it's not muddy or overpowering. Bass extension is terrific. Just perfect altogether.

lp640v12Thanks for that. So you wouldn't say there is more bass on the 6XX compared to the 598s? The bass on the 598s is enough for me. But I would like even clearer mids and highs. Also how do you find the 6XX in terms of comfort? Are the ear cups any bigger than the 598s? What about the headband extension? I've had headphones before (M50X) which were still too big for me at the small headband setting. With the 598s I actually need to extend the headband a few clicks on each side.

Mark_MI would say the amount of bass is more compared to the 598s but I'm sure you'll love it. It's a lot more detailed across the frequency range than the 598s and you wouldn't miss your 598s one bit. These are as comfortable as the 598s if not better. The clamp is a little tighter than the 598s, you might have to stretch out the headband a bit to loosen the clamp.

lp640v12Hmm okay. What about the headband padding? I'm just going on looks but it seems like the 58X/600 padding would be more comfortable than the 6XX/650. But maybe I'm wrong. In some ways I wouldn't mind less bass than the 598s but not by much. I jus don't want it to overpower the treble. I want music to be clear when listening to instrumental music like movie scores, classical and acoustic.

Mark_MOther than the tight clamp I really couldn't find any issues with the headphones. I listen to a lot of acoustic and classical and the 6xx is perfect for those. Even more so than the 598s.

lp640v12Hmm okay. I'm still debating on either those or the 58X. But I don't want to wait until at least sometime in July to get my headphones.

Mark_MI believe the 6xx should be worth the wait. Haven't listened to 58x so can't comment on those.

lp640v12Almost no one has heard he 58X. haha. Well lets hope they're worth the wait. If they're as great as many say I'm not sure I'd keep my 598s.

lp640v12Oh haha. Well I'm not sure they're a direct match to the 580s in the same way the 6XX is virtually the same as the 650s. It is a new driver in the 58X.

Mark_MI own both. Bass is not louder than on the HD598's, but deeper (you can hear the lower octaves of a piano, an organ or a synth/guitar bassline better) and tighter (less of a rumble, notes are better discernible). Still, HD6XX are no bass monsters, I wouldn't worry too much about that. They're overall better headphones than the HD598's, but they do benefit from a good amp and/or dac, more so than the HD598's. HD6XX's are great with all genres, even more so with classical music and vocal material. If you like a (little) bit more basslight / focused sound signature, the HD600 is a great alternative to the HD6XX. No big difference, slight difference in accent. The HD598's have an edge on comfort (a bit less clamp), but the HD6XX's are still comfortable enough for listening hours on end (at least, to me they are).

Merv73Hmm okay thanks. I did end up splurging on the 6XX so just have to wait until some time in April to get them.
