I Currently own some Fostex TH-X00's (Mahogany) And a pair of AKG K7XX's, So i'm wondering if these would complement my other two headphones, and my taste of mostly rock (Classic, but not just classic). I primarily use the Fostex's for everything. Also i'm using the Schiit magni 2 and modi 2 so i'm guessing that the magni 2 should power them pretty well.

SchmexyAt my job we have a few audiophiles and we did a few listening test between the akg7xx Senn. HD 600,hd6xx and HD 700. DAC/AMP fulla,O2 massdrop and e and schiit stack. All four can drive the 650 decently. The O2 and schiit stack drives the 650 well on high gain. The fulla 2 does a good job. If you put the fulla2 on max setting vs the O2 on low gain the dac on the fulla outshines it. A lot less distortation. I would suggest get the the HD650 if you will invest in a DAC/AMP and don't believe the hype if your not listening to classical music the full a2 is more than enough. If you are trying to kill your eardrums listening to classical get a setup with high gain. If you just want a great headset that can be driven anywhere get the HD 700 and you don't need DAC/AMP at all. As for sound that is so subjective. There are noticeable differences in the driver's between sennheiser and AKG. My ears believe the akg has less color than the sennheiser. But if you like warmth and close soundstage you will prefer Sennheiser over the AKG. If you want a more even sound then the AKG. I know fan boys will fry me but the HD 700 and akg or more a reference headphone than the 6xx. I hope that helps

JadMaktabiIf you want to play it safe: the HD6xx. Well known, well reviewed, thousands and thousands of satisfied users. The HD58x? Still not in production, the few reviewers had a pre-prod unit in hands. The bass extension may or may not be retouched by Sennheiser, we still don’t know and the pre-prod units have been reviewed to have less bass extension and level than the HD6xx, Hd600 and HD660s. For the time being, nobody except a few reviewers had the chance to try them out, so it’s kind of a gamble to buy the HD58x, based on a pre-prod unit reviewed by so few people and no idea how the final product will sound like. All this with a longer wait time for the HD58x versus a small 50$ difference to be paid to get the HD6xx. 300 ohms versus 150 ohms is not that great a difference: you will still benefit from an amp. The headphones’ efficiencies are very comparable‘ with only 1db difference under 1vrms, so the « portability » advantage of the HD58x versus the HD6xx is close to being not significative...The HD6xx are made for a lifetime, so what’s a 50$ difference for a durable and legendary headphone that proved over the last 15 years of so to be one of the best headphones available at any price. Maybe the HD58x will eventually prove to be a good headphone, but it’s a bit premature and I would play it safe at this given time if I were you. It’s your choice.

PeteMtlCan I drive them without using an amp?

JadMaktabiThe HD6xx is not that different from Hd58x on this matter: both cans can be used without aheadphone amp, but It’s not optimal and not recommended. I could use the HD6xx straight from my iPad or iPhone, but with volume would then be close to or at max level. It may work out, but to fully profit from the quality of either headphones, it’s better to use an amp. Even the 35$ NX-1s could do the trick for a while if you're on a tight budget. The better the amp, the better the headphones will sound.

KrisBaliYes you can use the Magni 2 stand alone but the only connectors are RCA so you need to have a 3.5mm to RCA jack

CosmicBeingi don't usually listen very loudly to music, so if i had to choose between getting only a modi or a magni, i should get a modi then?

KrisBaliwell depending on what headphones you are using/plan on using, the amp will make the worlds difference compared to just you mobo or when using a modi alone. here: https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/37vvui/schiit_magni_without_dac/ If you read some of the comments, I heard batamphile say something about how he cant tell the difference between they're mobo dac and they're $1k dac. They are using apple devices, and I hear they're pretty good dacs.
But regardless an amp is going to make a way bigger difference then a dac (unless your dac is broken, making noises, popping, ect).
Also I just found out that schiit released a magni 3, and I don't think I would upgrade unless people start talking about how much better it is then the magni 2. I think the magni's are just power not really sound, so they're not going to change or color the sound to much like a tube amp would make it warm. so I think they'd sound pretty similar, just the output would be greater.

SchmexyI agree but the mangi 3 is basically the mangi 2 uber at 50 dollars less. So go magni 3 I doubt you will find mangi 2 now anyway. I agree the AMP should be the first purchase. Lastly amps isn't just loudness the proper AMP will allow you to experience the entire sound stage offered by your headsets.

CosmicBeingI remember reading on Schiit’s web site and in a review that the Magni3 is a totally new design, it has in common with the Magni2 only the name And form factor. In fact Schiit says that the Magni3 follows the amp design that was done for the Jotunheim, but without the balanced amping and inputs/outputs and without the DAC onboard. But the way the amp is designed, (and i’m a lawyer/banker, not an electrical engineer), the Magni3 follows the way the Jot amp core was designed. I haven’t tried the Magni3 or the Magni2, but I understand that the Magni3 is not just an upgrade, it’s a complely new amp. That doesn’t mean the Magni2 is bad, it’s still a very good AB amp made with discrete components instead if op amps, it’s just not to par with the Magni3. The great thing about the Magni3 is that they made a giant step with it while diminishing the price to a very affordable 99$, and yes feature wise it’s more the remplacement of the Magni2 uber. The more I write about it, the more I want to order one myself, although i’m quite satisfied with my O2 and O2/SDAC setups. Just my 2 cents
