Its been 3 months since I received my pair of HD6XX . It took them around 50 -80 hours of listening for the phones to come alive. These are good headphones but are not the best bang for the buck in the sub 200 USD category. To my ears its the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro. The DT have more low end presense and its just as well defined. The highs are better articulated the music with them is more engaging and dynamic. The HD6XX have less low end bass presense are less fatigueing could potentialy have better mids but to me its close to a tie. They are a little dull and a little lazy.
For me the bass and the treble are what is going to swing you in one direction over the other. I like crystal clear highs and enjoy a punch in the low end so the DT990 pros are a keeper.
Now lets introduce price in the equation. The DT990 Pro can easily be had for 150 USD. This makes them my clear winner. Use the saved money for cable upgrades or save them towards buying a better amp.

IvayloEverybody is entitled to their opinion. The DT990 has a nasty treble peak at 10 kHz, which makes it a really hard listen for most people. Also, don't confuse an increased treble response with "crystal clear highs". It's just louder, while the HD 6XX is actually better on a technical level and retrieves more details. http://en.goldenears.net/10634 http://en.goldenears.net/11616

IvayloSorry for checking late, aslo I am no expert but you should try them with larger and thicker pads if you haven't already. I have not received mine they won't ship tell March but I am looking forward to trying them with all kinds of pads. I have found that for better sound stage and bass a bigger and deeper pad helps a lot.

Sab16xx are very good headphones and will be keeping my pair. I simply like the Dt sound a little bit more. Since my coment I have seen the dt990 pro on sale for 129 USD which is the bargain of the year. Whichever way you go you will not be disapointed.

CosmicBeingI have a custom made Bijeou tube amp. Widely aclaimed to be a quality piece of kit. Its built around phillips e288 cc tubes. This I pair with an Arcam ir Dac. The amp is good for headphones rated up to 600ohms
I also have the uDac 2 dac amp combo.
The uDac 2 is my portable system for when travel locally and does not get a lot of use...

Wolfman887Thats an interesting point I was thinking of upgrading the cable even bought some connectors and was planing to with silver or silver plated copper, but the pads could be a better start. Is there a specific model of pads that you have had a positive experience with?

IvayloIt seems like the 6xx will be like my 598 but a bit better but that something i don't really want (i think) the HD 598 are so natural and balanced that it was disappointing to me, yes they sound really clear and good but its just not fun Thanks for the recommendation the DT990 really sound like what im looking for

Sab1Keep in mind the dt 990 comes in 3 diffrent ohm variants 32 ohms 250 ohm and 600 ohm. If you have an amp for the job go for the 600ohm. 2nd best and cheapest option is the250 ohm version also called the PRO.

IvayloI have several for my Hifiman headphones but as far as these go I am waiting to get the cans in before I buy any pads. Mesurements need to be made in order to ensure the fit. I will be running them on my darkvoice tube amp with an O2DAC/AMP. I will also try them on the AMP for the O2DAC.

IvayloWhich amp/dac combo should I get? Budget of 200$ max. Should I opt for the Magni Modi 3, Fulla 2 or the O2 Odac?

JadMaktabiMate thats difficult one. I do not know any of these. Thats a little thight budget. Go for www.sevenoakssoundandvision.co.uk/p-9910103-nad-d-1050-black-optical-coax-usb-dac.aspx . NAD are a solid company but at this price point do not expect miracles. Denon also does a usb entry dac da-300usb thats ok it should be close to your budget. What you have proposed could be better but I have no experience with it.

JadMaktabiIt all depends on your end game and the genre of music you will listen too most.I regularly drive my hd 6xx with the fulla 2. It is an excellent device for the price point. And I enjoy the fulla 2 at max setting over both the Schiit stack and 02 on low gain max setting. However I do not get the full potential out of the headsets as easily noticed when listening to Jazz like thelonius monk. The schiit stack and o2 on high gain moderate settings really make the hd 6xx sing. So if you have the budget then go for it. Lastly if this isn’t you end game for headsets I would say get the Schiit stack. If you want to save the 50 dollars get the 02 . I only played with the 02 for a few days and found nothing wrong with it and its an awesome device in such a small shell. So after the tap dance you will be happy with either choice.

Sab1Hey, I own both the HD 598 SE and the DT 990 Pro 250 ohm. Being a hobbyist sound engineer for over 15 years, I want to use that experience to mention a few things I noticed about the Beyers:
1)They are BRIGHT no matter what music. They have a bothersome sibilance in the highs. It's hard to ignore or push through that metallic tinge no matter if the volume is low or moderate.
2)They lack the midrange fullness of the Sennheisers. The Beyers have a very transparent sound, where there is nothing in between the sounds, and it's impressive on a technical level, but makes the music sound like a recording, not like a musical performance. I do not think they sound thin, but they lack the organicness of the HD 598. What sounds like "muddiness" on the HD 598 is really a musical quality, not an EQ quality. Wind, percussion and string instruments in real life all have some sort of midrange "muddiness" to their sound due to the materials they're made. They do not sound perfectly high-res.
3)The bass is strong, tight and solid but empty to my ears. It doesn't have show the nuanced, realistic quality of the bass instruments and kicks. The HD 598 translate all those goody sounds properly. Again, technically good bass but musically inaccurate.
I admit I'd like the HD 598 SE to be brighter and more revealing, closer to the DT 990, but seriously, they don't need the brightness. Instruments in real life are never harsh or too sizzly in the top end. I do not recommend you the DT 990. I also own the DT 880 Edition 600 ohm and those have fuller mids but they're still metallic. It's not a musically-pleasing sound. Something real is missing from their sound. I mean this, again, in musical terms, not EQ terms. For example, a conga coming from the left ear sounds like conga in the room on the HD 598. They fool the ear and brain. On the DT 990, it sounds like a high-resolution, unrealistic recording of a conga. Technically, it's sharper, with more detail, but congas do not sound that defined in real life. They do not sound so crispy or sharp.
The HD 598 SE are my dullest headphones (besides my Porta Pros), but they are the most satisfying to my ears. I think there is something special to their sound. They sound real and satisfying even if the Beyers are more revealing and (artificially) crisp-sounding.
