so i have hd6xxx coming in august
currently i use sound blaster Z.
it seems clear that hd6xx needs to be driven by an amp to get the most from it, and most ppl say SBZ cant quite do a great job of it, despite its 600 ohm hd amp, so my tentative plan is to get a shiit magni3
will the SBZ DAC do a good job, or is a shiit modi2 significantly better enough to justify its cost?

Jeffs1Fulla can't power certain headphones plus is ONLY USB. I need coaxial and optical. And it can't power 300 to 600 ohm cans which I have. Not enough juice. Plus I had the Fiio E10k/Magni 2U before the Fulla was released.

daiichidokuWell here's what you do if you want the HD6XXs.
Join the drop. Let the HD6XX show up. Try it. If it doesn't seem to work for you, order an amp for it. Plenty of options. I like my O2 Amp but find the Sounblaster ZXr works fine driving 300 Ohm headphones. Don't have access to 600 Ohms.
And of course, Schiit make fantastic kit if you want to buy anyway. ;-)

Assimilator702Use the Fulla 2 as the DAC. Connect it to the Magni 3. Use it on its own as a semi portable DAC/Amp. Use it as a preamp for connecting your computer to an amp and speakers. Its pretty versatile and I don’t mind connecting my 650s direct to the Fulla. Drives them fine (as per my ears YMMV)

ThechansenAs I said....already had the Fiio E10k before the Fulla was released but since I bought the Magni 2U I would have purchased the Modi 2U anyway since I need a full feature DAC with optical and coaxial inputs. I have 2 or 3 CD transports setup at any one time plus my laptop with 90% of my music being in digital form. I still use my Fiio E10k if I want to go laptop>>coaxial >>into either my Modi 2U or my Sony ES DAC.

Assimilator702ty..but my question really was "can i get away with SBZ for good DAC and only have to buy the magni3 for amping purposes"?

daiichidokuI meant to reply to you instead of Assimlator702, my recommendation was go with Fulla 2 and Magni 3. It puts some seperation between the DAC and the rest of your electrically noisy computer. And the Fulla 2 has a ton of other uses. If you want to save some cash skip it and use the SBZ.

daiichidokuThe SBZ can drive them...just. It outputs 2 Vrms into 300 Ohm. See http://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/en/report/amp/creative-soundblaster-z.php
The Magni 3 will be better though.

exxrthat was my plan, to get magni 3...but should i get modi 2 as well, or is SBZ good enough DAC that i can use instead?

daiichidokuSBZ has a good DAC chip, the Cirrus Logic CS4398.
See http://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/en/report/dac/creative-soundblaster-zx.php (the Zx has the same DAC as the Z)
Not much point in getting the Modi really.
