So...we all have to wait until August 31st for these babies. For me, the fun of getting something special like this is putting together all the puzzle pieces. I'll be looking over amps (prolly tube since these supposedly respond so well) and getting a custom balanced cable made while I wait. Once they get here, I'll enjoy breaking them in with some classic rock and then playing heck out of them for years to come. What will yall be doing while you wait?

joshc220Personally, I have been scouring the "inter-webs" on (seemingly unending) information about different options for amps and DACs to drive these, and waiting as patiently as possible of course. Currently I am leaning toward the Massdrop x Cavalli Tube Hybrid amp, but have considered many others as well. I have learned more about mW, mA, dB/V vs dB/mW, solid-state, tube types, "rolling," output voltages, impedance, and so many other things than I realized possible. I can tell I've barely scratched the surface, but feel like I've already gone way off the deep end (especially when I look at all the browser tabs I have open). It has certainly been educational though, and even fun.
I don't really mind that these won't be shipping until August because it give me time to do all of this without feeling the need to rush to buy something right away. My fairly capable ASUS Z170-A motherboard is driving my current PC-37X set quite nicely for the time being. Enjoy the journey!

joshc220Well, I bought a schiit vali 2 to power these things, then I saw fucking august, so I bought AT M40X to have some portable sealed cans, then returned them because they hurt and didnt sound great, then I bought samson 850 and sony 7506, returned the sonys because too expensive for the sound. then I bought a HE-4XX so I could have some good cans sooner than these, and assumed those would get here fast because I wouldn't have to wait for someone to hand make them and then personally walk them to me from Germany like they are apparently doing with these..... and they wont get here till next month. Dont think I will buy anything else from massdrop because amazon has spoiled me with deliveries in hours not months. also bought a SMSL Sanskrit dac. just need some damn cans to show up from MD :/

joshc220I'm making myself a nice cable for them later on today and ripping every CD I own to FLAC while I wait. I've already been waiting a month so I've had plenty of time so far. I'll also get a new amp once I can justify it.

JeremyPYour actually in great shape as it is. I contacted Asus about my motherboard (x99deluxe ii) and confirmed with them that a DAC is unneeded unless you want to have one of the newer frequency qualities. In excess of 300khz. There is an onboard amp that is NOT enabled by default. They walked me through it and what a difference it made even on my HD 558s. They said ideally I can drive in excess of 500ohms. 700 on the super high end might be to much for it.

RemoriThat's interesting that you say that. I have actually been doing some research to that end myself. Do you happen to recall the procedure they gave you for enabling the onboard amp? I didn't realize this was a necessary step.
Do you know what onboard DAC & amp is on your X99 board? For mine it is a Realtek ALC892 DAC & TI RC4580 amp.

JeremyPI actually did not review which amp is soldered on. However, under the new realtek driver app, turn switching to auto under amp settings. Did not know that otherwise it is only LOCKED to the front panel jack. I always use my back panel Jack's since I'm a moron and have damaged them on other systems ..... Oops.

RemoriThanks for that reply! I did not realize that, and mine seems to have the same strange setting available (auto or front only). I have been using the front jack for my current headphones, and have some old (powered) Logitech desktop speakers plugged into the back jacks that haven't seen much use since picking up my PC37X set. I would have been scratching my head over this one, once I plugged these (or the 6XX) into the back jack to to test that out. You definitely saved me some time researching and digging around in the Realtek settings, so thank you!

RemoriI have the Asus ROG Strix Z370-i and the sound I hear straight from the board earphone jack vs USB to DAC to amp was pretty obvious on my HD25 (still waiting on 6XX and 4XX).

HeavyboxerCan you describe the difference? I'm assuming the dac amp was better? As noted above I went with a Vali 2 and Sanskrit dac and am quite pleased by the dac upgrade over the preouts on my msi gaming pro carbon b350 which is supposed to have a premium on board audio circuit

HeavyboxerFor this test I assume by on-board earphone jack you mean the jack on the back panel of the board (not the front-panel jack). Is this correct?
If so, did you confirm that the Amplifier Setting under Speaker Configuration in the HD Audio Manager was set to "Auto Switch" and not "Front Panel"?

slappomattThe DAC and amp output was a lot better to my ears than what the mainboard could manage. That being said, I plugged my headphone thru the front panel, so perhaps there's that?

JeremyPI plugged in via the front panels. They, in turn, are plugged in using HDaudio jumpers on the mainboard. I assume this will automatically be high res settings (or at least as high as what the board can manage)?

HeavyboxerOk, yea, as I understand it, the front panel connection on these boards gets the amp output (by default), so should be the full quality the board can output, not accounting for any residual noise picked up by the jumper wire of course. I'm not surprised an external DAC/amp would be an improvement. Just don't know if it would be enough for me to notice the difference. Guess there's only one way to know for sure...

Sennheiser PC37X randomly goes bad after disconnecting the cable ?

Greetings, Yesterday I was using my headset like normal with my macbook, just listening to music and on a call with people like usual, and the headset was perfectly fine. The stock wire that came with the headset is extremely long and yesterday it annoyed me very much that it kept getting tangled with itself, so I decided to see if the cable is replaceable. I pulled out the cable from the headset and saw the adapter, and looked online for a replacement. Upon plugging it back in, the audio sounded extremely muffled and washed out. Im not sure what I did wrong to make it mess up like that as I've always taken good care of it, ive had it for about 2 years and its always just been chilling on my desk, but anywho I thought the cable just went bad and ordered a replacement. The replacement came, and the issue is still persistant, so I am not sure what the issue is I've tried multiple different headsets and the issue is not with the port, and I also tried it with my windows laptop and...

Recommendation for my next headphone set? I have Koss 95x

Hey all, What would you recommend I get next and why? I have Koss ESP-95x electrostatic massdrop headphones. These are my first and only audiophile set. I love them. I think my only real requirements is $500 or less for the headphones and that they have a little more low end. I don’t need thump but these are really light on lows…but the experience is still awesome. Also any recommendations on an amp? I only have my electrostatic thingy. I am using the Topping D50 DAC. thx!!

Should I exchange the PC38X for better headphones?

I bought the PC38X headphones FOR GAMING and they are great, but I have NO use for a Microphone since I don't do competitive gaming and I was wondering if there were better headphone options at a similar price without a headphone, where (presumably) more of the cost was put into making it sound better. I also find that my PC38X don't get quite as loud as I would like and I was wondering if a cheap amp like the iFi Go link would draw a little more volume out of my phones. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BN6MM822?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details I went with the PC38X since it was considered the best bang for buck headphones.
