Before I click Join the drop, one question or just to confirm:
I'm not a bass-head, but I like tight articulate musical bass. In fact, I like detail, not too laid-back or veiled and not too harsh. Mids as well as lows and highs need to be there. So my question is are these pretty thin on bass? Are they a different sound then the HD518s? I do notice the same cliff drop around 9kHz as the HD518s.

skpetic1These are much better than any 500 series Senns. One of the best bass in a dynamic open over ear hedaphone. Just click and join the drop, just do it, don’t think too much about it. As long as you have a decent amp, you will thank me for recommending these. If you don’t have a decent headphone amp, just buy the Massdrop O2 or the Topping NX4 or any decent amp With low output impedance. Even the low power Dragonfly RED is a superb match to these HD6XX, best of all for portable usage with an iPhone or iPad with the HD6XX. Any amp that can manage 300 ohms and that can produce 2v of output while doing so will be enough. I own both the O2 and the RED and these are perfect matches to the HD6Xx for a very reasonable price. Just do it!

PeteMtlYeah, I'm leaning towards joining in about a minute. I have a JDS O2 amp already, which I like better than my Schiit Magni, not that the Magni is not good, but the O2 just has more punch. I know the sound stage on the 6XX is narrow, but so it is on my HD518s, so I am not expecting anything there. I haven't had much luck with open cans, I purchased the AKGs because of claims that the sound stage was wider. It might be, but they sound off balance. ($200 cans that sound like $100 cans). My closed cans (Status Audio CB1 and Takstar Pro 80s) sound better than my HD518s and AKGs.
I am hoping the HD6xx is not another $200 waste.
I'm not a fan of headphones, I'm a tower speaker guy, but sometimes cans are needed. I only have home stereo systems, not into phones and personal players. I also don't go near cans during hot weather, I can't take the heat.

skpetic1If the HD6XX won’t do it for you, Then I guess no open headphone will do.
May I add that many HD650 users and reviewers have reported that these headphones have the timbre and overall sound equilibrium that are closest that can be from a good pair of home speakers... Again, if these don’t do it for you...

PeteMtlYes, that is what I have read and heard. That is partly why I am interested. I guess so often with headphones, they are over-promised and under-delivered. On these though everyone is saying much the same thing, which is good. I wish I could hear them, but that is impossible now days. I have heard the HD600s and found them to be harsh and a very narrow frequency range, pretty much everything outside of the mids were dropped. However, reports I have seen on the HD650 or indeed the HD6xx (same thing), is far superior.
Even though I don't like Sennheiser sound best (although only referencing my HD518), they are the most comfortable cans I have.
My reference cans are currently Status Audio CB1s (really good sound if you like neutral, but they are monitors and work well for that use and I happen to like listening with them as well. That said though, I would not mind having an equivalent pleasurable listening pair to choose from. Judging by what I have read though, I think the HD6xx is going to be notably different from my 518s, so I am joining the drop.

skpetic1The other noteworthy headphone you should inquire is the HD58X Jubilee from Sennheiser/Massdrop. It seems from the latest news that the frequency response in the bass has been improved and that the HD58X (which is by the way a true 600 series headphones, not 500) has more extended bass than any other 600 series headphones (HD600, HD650/6XX, HD660S). Moreover, the rest of the frequency response of the HD58X is closest to the newcomer HD660S from Sennheiser, which has comparable 150 ohm drivers. All of this for 149$ on Massdrop. I pulled the trigger early on these a few months ago, at a time when the bass response on the pre-production units reviewed was weaker, but with the promise made by Massdrop and Sennheiser to improve the bass response and extension on the production version. The latest leaked graphs from DIY shows Sennheiser is delivering on its promise big time. If you like extended bass, this could be a good horse, although almost nobody has heard them yet... I’d stick my the HD6XX for now,(I own a couple of them) but if the HD58X drops again, it could be a good alternative.

skpetic1These are amp dependant like planars and scale well with better gear...look into 4xx as well...
you can basically get the 6xx and 4xx for price of hd650 and u will have complementing cans. I suspect u will like both...only way to know is buy both, easy to sell too when u upgrade...note planars need more break in and dont be fooled by low impedance planars...they scale just as well with good amps.. 6xx are less fatiguing and 4xx are more lively for edm and such...I love both cans

MarcSpenceI have two amps: Schiit Magni and JDS O2, I got them because I got the AKG K7xx cans and my AVR would not drive them. My vintage receivers had no problem though (not surprised). I use the amps for all my cans now, why not?
EDM is not one of the genres I listen to, but I am diverse. My usual is rock (prog rock, classic rock, folk-rock, post-rock, etc.), jazz (bebop, improv), classical (orchestral, chamber and baroque), folk, blues (blues-rock, acoustic, electric) and a number more. So for me it is paramount that cans (as well as speakers) be tuned to do well with all the genres I listen to and I like detail.
That is why I like my Status Audio CB-1s a lot. They are very neutral and yet really balanced and detailed. They perform well above their price. The only thing that comes close are my Takstar Pro 80s, but they are not as neutral of course.
I understand the HD650s are on the warm side, but in all the reviews I have seen all say the HD650s while warm are very detailed. (They also say they are true "audiophile" cans, which I don't give two shits about). While I find the sound of my HD518s to be a bit too warm, they are the most comfortable cans I own.
That said, I may like the HD650s better as they have different drivers at least. I have joined the drop and realize the risk of the over-promise/under-deliver scenario that permeates the industry. If I do not like the HD650 much (if they sound just like my HD518s for instance), I will just toss them and never purchase another pair of cans again. I'm happy with my $70 CB1 and Takstars.
If I like the HD650s, they will immediately replace my AKG K7xx!

skpetic1Well the 6xx is very different from the 7xx..u may like both! Ur amps are sufficient for 6xx :)
