I've been considering getting an upgraded listening pair of headphones, but I need some audiophile help. I'm shooting for something in the 200$ price range. I'm currently using my Sennheiser Momentum (1.0) headphones and Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 wireless on the go. I use my OnePlus 5 and Spotify for a music source! With all that said, are these a good choice? Any other suggestions? Thanks all!

gurnbenIf that's your price point then my suggestion for new headphones would be: Open back - Sennheiser HD6XX Closed - Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro

ThommyGI was actually considering buying both of these but for different purposes. For bass heavier or closed-off listening where I need to mute the sound out around me I would use the DT770... for just good and clear big sound stage listening for games or non-electronic or bass emphasized music, etc.I would use the HD6XX.... is this a good combination of headphones to own for this type of listening? Or, am I way off in what each of these headphones are good for... or am I even going to tell that much of a difference between them for it to be worth it lol. Appreciate any thoughts you have on that.

PacwageoYou'll definitely notice a difference between them. I think that's an excellent combination and you'll definitely FEEL the bass of the DT770 Pros more. The DT770 Pros are one of my favourite headphones in terms of soundstage and I get a lot of bad looks whenever I say that because no one should ever prefer closed backs. But honestly, the best pair of headphones are the ones YOU enjoy listening to the most and with those 2 headphones you'll get about the best that both options have to offer at that price point. Just if you get the HD6XX you'll probably need to invest in some sort of DAC/Amp if you want to listen to them from your phone because of their beefy 300 ohm impedance as opposed to the option of 32, 80 and 250 with the DT770 Pros.

ThommyGAwesome. Yeah I have an SMSL DAC / amp atm..... but I plan to also get a Schiit Magni / Modi.. I hear those are capable of driving these higher impedence cans with no problems. What DAC / amp would you recommend?

PacwageoDepends what you're going to use it for. Whenever I want to drive something a little more demanding on-the-go I'd pick the Audioquest Dragonfly Red or the Fiio Q5. But if you're going to be sitting down at you desk with them on then you cannot go wrong with the schiit stack

gurnbendepends on what you want, I have the momentum 1.0, 6xx, grado SR80, 325 & PS500 & B&W P5.
the grados, momentum & P5 can be driven pretty much by any source. But all grados are open back so no bueno at work or while traveling.
The P5 are not the best sounding one but I find them ~for me~ the most comfortable.
So I use the momentum if all I want is to plug it to a laptop or phone / tablet, I do enjoy the sound on these.
Big fan of grados but for $200 you wont get past the GR225, but grados are not comfortable and their build quality... lets say is to keep them at home next to your source.
The 6xx are GREAT, love them, but you have to invest on an headphone amp, I have a Schiit Argard 2 and since gotten them I'm considering upgrading to something more powerful. These are 300 ohms but read somewhere that at the very low end frequencies have a 600ohm resistance (I just read it somewhere, dont quote me there)
Beyerdynamics DT770Pro are 600ohm so you are still looking at an amo if you want them to be properly drive.

gurnbenThese will probably be your best bet in the $200 range. But, if you can, perhaps invest in an amp or amp/dac to really get all of the headphones potential.

gurnbenThe Momentums are excellent headphones for what they are designed to do. That being a rich and warm , comfortable headphone that is easily powered by mobile devices.
Are you looking for an “upgrade” for using with a mobile device? Do you need sound isolation? What are you looking for sound-wise out of your new headphones?

NejiWow! Lots of replies! I'm looking for an upgrade for use with a mobile device, although I'm not averse to get a DAC and use a laptop. These headphones are almost entirely for home use for listening for enjoyment. I will continue using in the momentum 2's for work and public!

gurnbenThere are many IEMs that would have a more hi-fi sound than the Momentums for less than $100. The Alpha and Delta D6 and iBasso it01 come quickly to mind. Another headphone to consider is the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Headphones. They have a different sound signature than 6XX. There are many choices out there. Be careful as soon you will want more and more...

gurnbenI have the Momentum V1, the HD6XX and the HD600 (and an M50 that never sees any action) and the Momentums are still my favorite headphones, the HD6XX have more detail and resolution, the quality of sound it's definitely superior, though I find the bass to be too much (more than the Momentums) and the mids sound a little recessed to me, that's why I got the HD600, which have a bit more clarity and mids are really forward but sometimes the lows sound anemic, still my main trouble with them it's that being open headphones, I have to increase my normal listening volume to hear details, which doesn't happen with the Momentums.
I don't regret buying any of the HD6's, but I'll probably test them thoroughly to see which one I'll keep and which one I'll sell. I think you'll like the HD6XX, for $200 they are definitely a great deal.
By the way, I want to ask you, What are the sound differences between the Momentum V1 vs V2? I know you're using the V2 wireless but I guess you have listened to it wired, I was thinking in buying the V2 as well.

FenrizWithout going into way too much detail, and I think this will answer your question, when I want to sit down and listen to music, focused on the music, I'll always use the wired momentum 1's over wired and wireless 2's. I noticed just a day or so ago (when I started looking at headphones) that the momentum 2's we're pessimistic satisfying. The bass didn't feel as direct, the mids we're more distand, but the highs were ok. It's hard to describe, but the 2's sound more distant than the 1's, most likely due to the way they sit farther from your ear and fit completely around when compared to the 1's! Don't get me wrong, I use the 2's literally on a daily basis, almost all day as a matter of fact. The noise cancellation is also great. They are also loads more comfortable, but as a sound experience, I prefer the 1's!

gurnbenAddendum - the sound signature is almost identical, just feels "distant" with the 2's.

gurnbenThe 6XX are a good options depending on the usecase, they have very good Clarity with really good midrange which is what they are praised for, but if you want more kick in the bass you should get the hifiguys 4XX which is also a massdrop product at 169Usd. For more options you should check out Z reviews on YouTube. When buying the 6XX you will more than likely need an amp to power them as they are power hungry.

gurnbenIt needs power to be driven correctly, I don't feel that a phone has enough power them..... Would need a dac or Amp in my humble opinion

gurnbenFWIW, I own a pair of HD1's (rebranded Momentum 2's) and B&W P3's, and I joined the recent Massdrop for the HD-6XX'S (open-back, high impedence; home use only) and the Fostex Mahogany (closed back, low impedence; will see some use both at home and at work. I don't really do/believe in the "higher than CD" Hi-Rez music, but I do still but CD's and rip em losslessly for playback via Plex, and get gratus 320 kbps MP3's of them stored for me in "the Google" to play nice with my Google Play Music streaming subscription.
I love the HD1's for on-the-go. I like the way they look and feel. I love the "light but effective" noise cancelling (not as loud of a hiss as some). And I think they sound "good but not $300 good" (but better than similar $300 offerings from Bose).
I think I'm gonna love these 6xx's. I can't wait to get them. They're definitely the exact opposite of the HD1s. I don't really like the way they look. At 300 ohms (and not flat; some lower frequencies show a power Spike of practically twice that on a graph I saw). Open back means I can't use them at work even if I had a proper amp at work (which I don't/won't). But from what I've read they should have a much bigger soundstage than what I've been using, and they're supposed to be "tastefully colored sound" ("fun") and not perfectly flat like the 600's, which I think I'm gonna like.
I change my mind about what amp I'm gonna buy to pair with them literally daily, but I'm pretty sure I'm just gonna go "all the way in" and buy a schiit Johtunheim DAC/AMP right out the gate. Lots of power. Low noise floor. Balanced inputs and outputs. *Should* work great now with these 6xx's AND support a future Planar Magnetic purchase I made without having to ALSO upgrade amps...

psuKingerI think you will love your HD 6XX as much as I do! I also have the Momentum 2 and still use them to this day due to the convenience, the looks, the noise cancellation and all the same reasons you mentioned. But when it comes to really LISTEN to music and get lost in it I adore how the 6XX perform! Yes, they are not an eye catcher, you need to be in a silent place and they leak a lot of sound but you get rewarded with an incredibly satisfying listening experience.
Currently I use them with the MCTH and occasionally with the Magni 2 and can confirm that these headphones scale really well depending on your amp selection. However, if you are going straight into the Johtunheim I think you will be able to get the most out of these headphones! :)

BrokeneckguyIt depends on what you mean by proper. It's not optimal, but it exceeds my expectations. If I didn't have anything to compare it to, I'd be none the wiser.
