I had received mine about a week ago. I was really hyped up over this, maybe this was a bad thing. I had listened to mine to a week now and I have to say I'm not quite getting what everyone else is getting out of these headphones. I was expecting a lot more. I had paired this up with my Fiio X5 (1st gen) and Fiio A5 amp. I listened to all kinds of music, from rock to classical and everything in between. I love music and love quality but I am in no way consider myself to be an audiophile and I'm not commenting in any of that level, just from an avaerage guy who really enjoys high quaility music. I'm not sure if headphones require break-in period? but I'm not impressed at all with the HD 6XX. For the whole week of listening I know I was missing something, the sound didn't seem to be full, it was definitely missing the bass. The sound was really clear and crisp for sure. I had compared it to my buddy's old HD598 where the HD598 construction felt far more superior, you can feel the high quailty of the pastic and parts whereas the HD6xx had cheaper plastic feel. The HD598 (with same Fiio setup and same song) had much more punch and more bass and also had the same crispness. Maybe it was broken in? I had not tried the HD650 (retails $500US) which the HD 6XX is supposed to be modeled after that costs only $199. Same company, same product at less than half the price? Too good to be true? There is still a glimmer of hope in me that "break-in" period will open up these headphones....then again hope is only good in movies.

HingaferI too am taken back by the less than minimum bass. My HD518s have too much bass. I'm thinking I should have gone with the HD598s. For what it is worth in my opinion the HD600s are even worse having tried those. Bass doesn't even show up on them. At least it is there on the 650s/6xx, but not quite making the minimum standard level. The6xx and 650s are the same in every way except color of plastic, this has been verified to death. All Senn cans are plastic and amazingly durable. Sennheiser are masters at plastic formulation. I've had my HD518s for 9 years and they show no signs of wear.
Yes, like speakers and phono carts, headphones are mechanical and therefore will "break-in" over time and gain more of whatever signature they are voiced for. When I got my AKG K7xx, I thought it has super narrow staging, lack of bass and image. After about 8 hours of use or so the staging is still narrow compared to the hype, but slightly wider than both my Senns (also open cans). Also, bass has appeared and is close to satisfaction and imaging is ok. So I am holding out some hope for the HD6xx, we will know in a few hours.
Hingaferif you are going to use a portable amp, then get the 58x, for 6xx you need a better amp. I am currently using d10+x7s combination, and 6xx sounds great, or try the massdrop O2+sdac amp/dac. the 6xx is not meant to be bass heavy. the 58x has more bass, treble and soundstage.

HingaferI have the HD598 (I love it) and now the HD6xx. I cannot agree with you. The HD6xx is of much sturdier build. For sure the HD598 is much easier to drive, I need to crank up the DAC/amp much more. While the HD598 is unbeatable for the width of the sound stage, the SQ is by no means superior. A bit differently tuned.
As for the price - look at the numbers sold... Senhheiser gets to move tens of thousands of units, with no marketing or distribution costs...

HingaferYeah. The FiiO A5 isn't really enough power to drive the 6XX well. Also could have been partly your music source, if you were listening to mp3s, spotify, or youtube rips.
As for the bass, the 650/6XX is definitely not a boomy headphone, but it is also not "missing" bass. A lot of people just getting in to audiophile gear seem to think that because all they've heard up to that point has been pretty bad consumer products like Beats and Gaming headsets, which have the bass cranked up. You get the 6XX for the mids. If you want something with more bass you're probably better off getting the 58X, which is also easier to drive with low end gear.
And as others have mentioned, the HD 6XX is indeed the same as the HD 650 except painted dark blue.

Hingafer6xx out the box sounded terrible, muddy, Lifeless. It took me about 110 hrs for them to really start opening up. Now they sound beautiful. More detailed, open with outstanding mids. But these headphones unfortunately do require a decent amp to come alive.

Albert92703Yeah. I was in the same boat. Out of the box I was disappointed, but after a while they really started to sound great.

BradumJust want to add that both headphones 6XX and 598 were used on same setup, Fiio X5 dac and Fiio A5 amp listening to same song. Pausing and switching headphones back and forth. To my ears it was day and night between the two headphones. The 598 was awesome and the 6XX wasn't so awesome to me. Maybe some people are correct that 598 is easier to drive than 6XX. If this is the case than maybe I will need to get a better Dac amp.

HingaferI mean, the 6XX will sound better using a better amp, but the A5 should still be enough to power them decently (I was thinking of a dffferent FiiO when I said it wasn't powerful enough). Could also be your music source, if you're listening to mp3s you won't get the full advantage of the 6XX's detail. Or maybe you just prefer the sound signature of the 598... which is fine.
The 6XX is by far the technically superior headphone though.

BradumI only listen to flac with my Dac setup. Maybe 598 are just better cans? I'm still hoping these 6XX will get better with time. Not saying they are bad headphones.

HingaferSimilar experience. Out the box the 6xx sounded terrible, muddy, lifeless. It was only until 110 hrs of burn in til these hp sounded amazing, opened, detailed with a wonderful mid-range. A Substantial upgrade in audio quality from 598. Although 6xx do require good amp to really come alive and the fiio may not do it justice, unfortunately.

Albert92703Albert, so what would you suggest would be a good ( better) desktop amp to pair up with my Fiio X5? I am overwhelmed by the different amp on the market. Would appreciate any suggestions.

HingaferBest value in the low-end market are probably the Schiit Fulla for $99, or the Schiit Stack (Modi/Magni) for $198.

Hingafer6xx are high impedance headphones and would go great with OTL tube amps. Mass drop‘s Dark Voice 336SE, Massdrop’s Alex Cavalli Liquid Carbon X or Bottlehead Crack are amazing pairings but also cost quite a bit at $375-$500. JDS O2/Odac is also well regarding pairing and runs about $200.
