Not really an audiophile but I'm getting the hd6xx for studio reference and mixing but do I need a dac/amp to run these? Mind you that I have an audio interface (scarlett 2i2) and I'm interested on buying jds element. I want to know if the element is all I need to start using hd6xx or if there's anything else to buy to get it to work properly.

MagixxdThe Scarlett's headphone output is low power and pretty bad in general. I suggest you get the JDS Labs Atom instead of the Element, it is cheaper and superior in every way except for the plastic case.

snowsurferBut don't I need a dac for the atom or can I just plug it in like that?

MagixxdYes, you do, but you can use the Scarlett for that (I believe it has RCA outs, doesn't it?).

MagixxdAs snowsurfer said, you can use the scarlett 2i2 as a dac and pre-amp and then connect it to the jds atom. However, it should be noted that the outputs for the scarlett are (I believe) 6.35mm. You would need to use an adapter of some sort though. The jds atom can take in rca or 3.5mm for input, so you could either get two single 6.35mm to single rca adapter (one for left and right channels) or you could get a single 3.5mm to dual 6.35 cable.

dwang040Yeah I'll try that out and get some connections. Unfortunately, the atom won't ship till March 5th so I guess the magni will do for now. The element sounds promising because it won't give any colorization and hopefully 2i2 is a decent dac to work with.

MagixxdYou will hear less of a change from the dac part than the amp part at this level. Anything external with the right connections will do for now. The amp upgrade is a massive difference though, be it with the Element or the Atom. Make sure you check out the Atom and read up on it, it has been measured to punch way, way above its price level.

snowsurferTrue enough. I guess I'll wait on the atom to stock up so I could buy it. Can't wait to find out the difference on quality especially when I'm getting warnings for using my monitors out loud. I appreciate all of you for giving me tips!

MagixxdI oem the Atom, and I would recommend it for the price. The magni has a bit more power and has a metallic chassis, but the Atom is better in terms of things like noise floor, distortion, etc. I mean, in all fairness, you can probably order the Atom, and then just use the Scarlett for now. It's not to say that the Scarlett isn't 100% not usable with the 6xx, it's more an issue of volume and loudness with the Scarlett.

dwang040It don't have that flat frequency response then? I don't mind if it has a little bit of distortion but colorization is not a good idea for mixing a track

Magixxd@Magixxd - The HD 6XX has a high impedence of 300 ohms and you will need a dac and amp to power these headphones. You will not get the potential sound of these headphones without an amp and I would recommend atleast the the magni and modi Schiit stack combo. Check out www.schitt.com

jah_offisah808I currently own a Shit Modi 3 DAC and trying to decide between Vali 2 or Magni 3 AMP. While Magni 3's wattage specs at 300 ohm is better than Vali's, I've read somewhere that the Magni 3 has steely sound (treble). Anyone can confirm if this is true?

gyroscopicsIm not sure about the steely sound for magni 3 amp but I have the Schitt Jotenheim DAC/AMP combo and happy with the sound signature. I would recommend getting the Schiit Loki and its a high quality tone control that helps change the tone you want for your headphones are any inperfection system to balanced out the sound you want. Im planning to get one soon too.

MagixxdYou can go to audio science review and look up the measurements if you're looking for the specifics. I'm not saying the magni is wonky or colored to the point that it's bad (cause if it were, then nobody would buy it), but when you compare it to the jds atom, the atom does what the magni used to do amazingly, just a bit better.

dwang040Yeah I want to get the atom and try it with my scarlett 2i2. I mean it won't sound that bad I hope.

MagixxdDon't worry, it won't sound bad, because the Atom isn't an amp that colors sound like a tube amp would or something like the liquid spark. It's main focus is a simple amp to provide power and amplify your music.

dwang040The JDS Labs Atom Amp is on my list. Too bad it's backordered. Is it really much better than the Magni 3? Is it worth the wait or should I just get the Magni 3 ?

gyroscopicsAt that point, it's up to you. As I've said earlier, the magni has more power and a sturdier chassis (metal vs plastic), but the measurements are better on the atom. Don't get me wrong, I doubt it'll be music changing different, but if you have things like sensitive iems, or care about better measurements, then the wait could be worth it for you. Here's a link to the measurments. There are some comparisons to the Magni posted here: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-new-jds-labs-atom-headphone-amp.5262/

dwang040I got the single 3.5mm to dual 6.35 cable so I can connect them to the atom. Is there any videos showing that process that you mention because I couldn't find any answers on youtube.

MagixxdHere's an article done by jds labs. But yeah, it will get really messy since most amps (specifically ones we listed) will take in a rca input, where as the scarlett is using 6.35 output. Anyways, hope this article clears things up for you: https://blog.jdslabs.com/2018/03/how-to-connect-a-headphone-amplifier-to-an-audio-interface/

dwang040I saw the article before but that's for the objective and not the atom. I'm sorry for asking alot of questions but I want to make sure the single to dual 6.35 into the atom's 3.5mm input on the back will work as a good connection. Is that all I need? No other connections?

MagixxdNo worries, that's what forums are for. Yes, the article is specifically for the objective, but keep in mind what I said earlier. The amp we mentioned MOSTLY ALL use rca input. The objective uses rca input, so it'll need to use that 6.35mm to rca converter. The atom uses rca input, so it'll need to use that 6.35mm to rca converter. The schitt magni uses rca input, so it'll need to use... see the pattern :^) So even though the amp is different. Many amps like the ones suggested and even sold on this site will have rca input for you to use and connect to. But yeah, just to recap everything. Your computer will go to the Scarlett 2i2. The Scarlett will use the 6.35mm to rca cable, that will connect to a standard rca to rca cable (as shown in the blog), that rca cable will connect to the JDS Atom, which will output audio to the Senn 6XX. EDIT: You could probably look up 6.35mm to rca male (thought I don't have any support for it, just theoretically it should work). That way, instead of having 3 cables, you'll only have 2 cables. Still a little messy, but I guess that's one less cable to deal with... Ex: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TRS202--hosa-trs-202-insert-cable-1-4-inch-trs-to-dual-rca-6-foot?mrkgcl=28&mrkgadid=3303552200&rkg_id=0&product_id=TRS202&campaigntype=shopping&campaign=aaShopping%20-%20SKU%20-%20Accessories&adgroup=Cables%20-%20Hosa%20-%20trs202&placement=google&adpos=1o1&creative=285723449942&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CjwKCAiA2fjjBRAjEiwAuewS_bD5yX4vXoEp-3nHGPy1t-XQM8Vr4XHTJfBmT5P6dPhbZQmQY1-8RxoCZJQQAvD_BwE

dwang040Damn I think I bought the wrong cable https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B073WS5F17/ref=ppx_yo_mob_b_old_o1_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1&th=1 There's was a comment earlier about getting this one so I got it. Now I'm waiting for the atom because it's been backordered up to march 11 :/ But just in case, I'm gonna buy the rca cables so that can rid my worries and start using the atom as soon it gets here. I appreciate your help :)

MagixxdThat is actually another option. I know my original post was messy, but one of the options I mentioned was to go from dual 6.35 to 3.5mm. Here's an image of the JDS atom's back: https://puu.sh/CVIyO/f365b53d72.png Notice on that right side, you have an ac in, and next to that, there is 3.5mm option. That is also an input. Most likely what the previous person was telling you to do/ suggested that cable. So yeah, you don't need to buy the rca cables if you already bought the amazon linked cable. I go lucky as I was thinking about getting the JDS atom months ago, but when I finally decide to pull the trigger, it was around Feb 20th, right when the orders were starting to get shipped.
