As expected, this drop was amazingly popular. However, this increased demand on our servers in ways we didn’t anticipate which caused some difficulties processing orders this morning.
Our operations team will be manually removing any duplicate preauthorization or transaction charges you might see, and they should be reversed from your statement in the next 48 hours.
We will continue to post updates throughout the day in this discussion so that the community has a clear understanding of events and resolutions when we have them.
We apologize for any inconvenience, and thank you for your continued support.

AlexPkWhat bullshit. You pre-announced this drop days ago. You knew there was over 13,000 request for this drop. To say you didn't anticipate such a demand on your servers only exposes your incompetence. How do you explain how those of us were able to actually hit the join drop button and place our payment only to receive the OOPS! page repeatedly. And then it appears that those who spammed your site got through while those of us who tried to play fair were screwed. Your excuses reek of hypocrisy.

AlexPkWhat about the individuals that have a verified transaction at 0604PST with their Credit Card company only to have you cancel the transaction 2+ hours later? I seriously doubt 5,000 were sold in four minutes. So, once all the duplicate orders are removed, how do you rectify the one's that attempted to order early only to have it canceled? There are multiple posters here that claim to have been successful after 0604PST - the original charge on my account.

AlexPkSo I tried multiple times and finally had some transactions go through. So I had three transactions before the drop ended. I clicked cancel on two of them but they never "cancelled." Even worse, after the drop ended, I got two more confirmation e-mails and 2 more transactions that I was never even given the option of cancelling. Can I be ensured that I will only be ordering 1 pair of these headphones?

apparatI think the first spurt got to around 400ish in a few minutes. Then things slowed down due to the transaction errors. At some point it jumped up to around 800 where it got stuck again and then the last fix opened the flood gates for the next 4,000. I forget the exact times, but by 8am PST it had hit 5,000

Butting my head up REPEATEDLY against the "Ooops" page and watching the counter still go up was ... not a good feeling. Ultimately it hit 5K, meaning I was SOL and locked out of the drop.
I don't mind missing a drop if I'm too late to it. I *was* however prepared to join on time. You could do us the courtesy and be prepared as well, especially if you created so much fanfare around the event in advance.

I just emailed them to delete my account. They simply screwed those who joined the drop early only to not get in, while others came along later and by spamming got in. I refuse to support companies who screw over those who play fair and square. No more Massdrop for me.

CybourgMD is a distributor. Sennheiser is the manufacturer/supplier. Sennheiser sends their product they manufactured to MD to distribute to MD's network. This way Sennheiser doesn't have to manage the network of customers or the individual shipping. This is how a supplier-distributor relationship works.
It doesn't matter where it's made, it matters who is distributing it.

AlexPkAlex, if I may make a suggestion: your web server logs should have the details of people who tried but failed to get through. I would suggest you use the units released after removing duplicate orders to fill those unsuccessful orders, in order of submission. It might also be a good idea to introduce a "rain check" feature so people who missed out on the drop can get in on subsequent ones. That would go a long way towards assuaging disappointed members. Finally, you should probably revisit the admission control algorithm to lock inventory for 5 minutes or so before attempting a credit card authorization.

AlexPkYou guys are conditioning your customers to overload your servers with multiple join requests because that seemed to be the only thing that worked. What do you think is going to happen next time? We are automatically going to go to the multiple screen/device/request method immediately. There was never any communication from you on how to proceed if the website is lagging. Better communication would be good for all involved next time.

mmmmmmmasonThe hypocrisy part is that he says they did not anticipate such a demand on their servers, but they pre-announced this drop days ago, all the while knowing the drop was limited to 5,000 with over 13,000 requests for it. Of course they knew there would be a demand of their servers and apparently did nothing to prepare for it. Hence the hypocrisy.

CybourgHey. One I can answer for sure right now. They get made in Ireland, but all 5000 units will be sent in bulk to our fulfillment center in the U.S. Once they show up there they get packed into individual units and sent out to everyone.

AlexPkThanks for attempting to keep the community somewhat up-to-date. I am hoping to be one of those who will be made whole as well as I was from 6:01am stuck for hours on end trying to get through and then found a slew of orders hit my CC and PayPal without email confirmation or activity in the MD transaction tab.
With that being said, you guys have a lot to work out. IMO, most importantly, people WERE impacted outside of your website by their CC companies locking up accounts to prevent fraudulent charges. That is a real world impact of today's systematic failures. So, during the look back, I cannot think of a higher priority item to ensure that it NEVER happens again. Not only to your own reputation but for your customers' reputation as well.

AlexPkThis is so great. First ever drop, had them ready at "checkout" within the first minute and still didn't manage to get them. Awesome. How is that fair? Had 2 confirm buttons spinning for hours, didn't continually spam like many others, increasing the bottleneck. Absolute garbage. I want someone to explain to me how I missed out, how my transaction didn't go through when it was initiated less than a minute into the sale, and when others who came in much later were able to get through. There has to be some kind of log of the people who were at a similar stage as me. I hope that something will be done for those who were legitimately prepared, here at zero hour, yet still screwed.
What kind of transactional system that is scarcity based and built around getting 'there' first doesn't do in order processing? And also, when will any company in any similar scenario ever be prepared for increased traffic, especially when you have the data and signs that indicate demand is huge? How come no one ever over-prepares their servers when they are expecting a surge? Why must the cheap way always be taken at the expense of customers, just so you can supposedly save some money, money that may actually be lost due to angry customers that never return? It's infuriating. Just once I would love to see an entity beef up their systems enough to meet expected, abnormal demand. Just. Once. Not that it matters, but if an amenable resolution to this debacle isn't found, I will never shop here again, nor will I ever mention this site to anyone except to tell them to be prepared to get screwed whenever there are actually good deals. >Right-Click Bookmark > Delete

blikkemAgree with this. One of the side effects of the payment database getting locked up was that it also locked us out of the page editing section so we couldn't do a big announcement type update. All the other comments by us got buried so fast that basically it was like no communication was done. Learned a lot here.

I find that hard to believe. Call it how it is, please. You guys sent us a follow up email (November 4th) on this subject acknowledging and bragging that demand had already exceeded supply when you had only announced this drop on the 3rd.
At that point in time, you KNEW you were going to have disappointed customers. Transparency before the fact would have been the best way to resolve this (for example, confirming whether or not a follow up drop would happen). There was plenty of time to prepare for demand that was pre-recorded on you own website. I believe that many of us that were attempting to place an order at 6am were cheated. It wouldn't surprise me if it was discovered that a DDoS attack helped skew the availability away from potential customers. I wonder if the orders that got through are concentrated to a specific region...
I just don't buy the "Melmac" excuse. I find it hard to believe that your system was overwhelmed this completely by just legitimate traffic.

apparatIf you're referring to a $1 hold on your credit card/paypal, I'm not sure that counts as a transaction. Because this is a group buy, your "order" isn't the same as if you had placed it with Amazon at 0604, for example.

I personally tried to submit an order about 10 times between 6am and 630am and a few more times until they sold out. I hope that not only people with transaction history or a pending charge are provided a solution when the time comes. I'm not mad I didn't get an order through. Orders that went through should obviously be served first, but I hope you also consider the people who were here but didn't hit submit hundreds or thousands of times just to slip in an order. Thanks

AlexPkI was here early on in the drop, and couldn't get through. Is this also something yall are looking into? So that low serial numbers go to the people who were actually here? I ended up have 7 transactions, all with super different transaction numbers. They got cleared out and I have one left. Was wondering if this was something that would be looked into.
I also want to say thank you for taking the time to deal with all of us. Most of these people are pretty angry right now, but you seem to be keeping your cool and trying to help them. Been here since 2014 and this is one thing I can say I have been very impressed by. Massdrop has always had good Customer Service imo, even with warranty stuff and the like.

I sat there for an hour watching the little spinning thing on that button while the sold number went up with no confirmation (email, credit card account, MD site) that anything is happening. I had no choice but to start using two screens and my phone to get through. I think their server just skipped big chunks of requests and just kept moving forward with the next request when it unstuck itself instead of going back in order. Worse thing is the Oops page didn't always go up so you can resubmit leaving pages just spinning and forgotten. That's not the spammers, that's the server and MD for not stress-testing it before today.

I was able to get my payment info in, get an authorization charge on my card, and then get the spinning join button. I got fed up after 45 minutes, and closed the window. I'd still like to get into the drop if I can, and I ordered when there were 260-ish items ordered. So I would have been in that first group of 500. I don't see it in my transactions. Knowing that there were multitudes of impatient people submitting multiple orders really frustrates me, because it really seems like the most impatient users are rewarded here. I really hope you guys figure this out.

While I don't think your business has the capacity to handle Amazon levels of traffic, at the very least your web host should be able to tell you how many unique requests you had accessing your servers, because web host companies usually charge for that sort of thing.
You guys know (or have access to) your average daily traffic numbers and could have did simple mathematics to figure if the number of people that requested the headphones was higher than your typical daily traffic and contacted your web host to see if your site could handle the traffic.
I mean, you guys have a counter on EACH drop page. It's pretty disingenuous to put forth the idea that this result wasn't foreseeable and preventable.

VortakuYea all the duplicates were removed and the earliest one should be left behind. We're trying to work out a way to honor all the transaction time stamps based on the first attempt, but I don't have a lot of concrete info on that one yet. Engineering is running full steam right now trying to fix the problems with the checkout system as well as researching the issue with the 'stuck' transactions.

Planning, testing and putting into production the changes needed to make this site run smoothly for this drop might not have been feasible within the timeframe they were allotted. And is the dollar investment worth the upgrade over a single drop like this? Maybe a reasonable scale up over long term site demand is more reasonable than short bursts like this.
I'm in the same boat with many others. Paypal confirmation with no word from massdrop. The chances of us "winning the lotto" on this drop wasn't in our favors from the start. I can't be mad if I wasn't one of the luck ones.

Coyote00Yeah, spamming killed this drop, I just wished they had something in place to avoid making people feel that was the only way to get their requests in. Communication, quicker server, maybe gathering the first 5000 payments before trying to process them. Maybe have a wait list afterwards for the next 500 requests in case some payments didn't go through, instead of trying to process each payment at the time of the request their servers wouldn't have been so taxed.

These sound exactly the same as the already existing HD650 headphones that have been out for years and years and these headphones will show up again very soon. AlexPkI am sort of the opposite as most folks. I do not see a transaction on my card, but I do in fact have an email telling me I am in as well as it showing up on my transactions page. It just says "pending" though. How do I know if I got in or not?

After this repeatedly for 10 minutes I clicked the link to contact massdrop if this continues that is on the actual OOPs page. I sent an email to MD while there was still stock available and even received the reply from MD at 9:11am (CST) that you were working on issues. Because my spinning loops and oops pages never created a hold on my CC then I am not eligible to have a charge pushed through and will not be able to get in on the drop? Sorry just trying to understand what method you were using for determining eligibility because while I am at work I cannot spam the site and continuously refresh but I did for 15-20 minutes and sent a help email which there is a record of and there were units still available for purchase? Thanks for any reply just wanted to know if I should keep following the thread or accept that fact that I am not even eligible for the remaining stock from duplicate orders?

I also never said people should use this as a 1 time trike, but for 1st time visitors this might be a tough one to get over. Personally, I probably gave MD 10 strikes before quitting purchasing things (and this is over multiple years and thousands of $$$).
I also do not understand people downplaying such a massive cluster bomb, but I agree that stuff does happen and to each their own who they decide to deal with it.

Alex - recognize what is happening here. I am taking the time to write on this forum, just like fdro, so we get to hear about a "damage control plan". Best outcome for me - a headphone with 1-500 serial # since I was on at 6:07am. Acceptable outcome - a headphone.
Too much to ask for? If you allow me to suggest a remedy - dedupe to 1 per person, offer the freed up inventory to people who missed, in the order of their "Join drop" button clicks. If I still don't get one - no complaints. Sounds fair?

bkirkley09Based on my current information and understanding, if you were here at 6am and attempted to join there should be history of that transaction in our database. At that time people were getting denied at checkout, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason why specific transactions got through and some didn't.
Right now we are working making an ordered list of all the users based on the time they attempted to join and were denied. If it turns out all the duplicates are removed and we have left over units we will try to honor the order in which people attempted to join.
I don't have enough information to say any of that is for sure right now, but I will be sure to update everyone as soon as I can.

AlexPkI was able to press join almost immediately after 6am pst and well 6.5hrs later and the loading button stopped and the drop isn't in my transactions. It does appear on my credit card however, I know I should be on the under 500 list but due to this whole fiasco I'm not even certain I'm getting one.

The former being what happened to me and others trying to join at 6am. Since I don't see any hint of the transaction actually going through in my transaction page or on my card history.

AlexPkI never made it to commit. I was trying from 5:59am until it sold out. Clicked "Join" and then "Join drop" after choosing paypal a ton of times. Made it to Paypal once and approved but then it "Oops"ed me again. So you would only have record of it if we made it to a "commit" button?"

HuJianI am not 100%, but I think if you got an Oops page after entering your payment info, there should be a record of your attempt to join. If you were trying since 6am there's a pretty good chance your recorded pretty high on the list of people who attempted. Hopefully engineering will get back with some news soon.

For some reason I received an email with Paypal saying I authorized a Payment to Massdrop for 214.99USD but no email regarding me joining the drop for the HD 6xx. Hopefully I do end up getting the headphones as the payment is still pending! Thanks again for your transparency with the company, I appreciate your hard work.

AlexPkSame situation as many others here. I was on at 7:02am MST which is 9:02am EST, and didn't get one. There were only around 350 sold at the time I got on. Wouldn't run my card or PayPal and got the Uh oh and oops page multiple times.
Also with the marketing blitz you guys did for this, there is no excuse for not expecting heavy load on your servers when the drop started. In the event that some become available, how are you guys going to handle it? Do the guys that emailed support get first dibs? Or are you gonna open the drop up and let the free for all happen again? If you guys have a record of who clicked join and at what time that would be the fairest solution. The first 5000 who clicked join get one.

I did not receive any transaction on my paypal and my CC's continually got rejected no matter how many times I tried (tried different cards too). I even tried opening multiple tabs as someone suggested, got through the paypal gateway but failed when it tried to return the call back to MassDrop. I even still have the payment URL (https://www.massdrop.com/payment/xxxxx) if that helps any. What are the chances these are recorded somewhere too to show that I was there at the start?

AlexPkI already have contacted support regarding my case but just to add it here anyways.. I am part of this drop already as 1 of my 2 orders somehow got through. I had a Paypal order which didn't go through but Paypal authorized it already. And another Credit card order that was stuck waiting until it timed out. My transaction states that it is Pending payment.
For the record I also passed along the Paypal transaction number to support as well. Hopefully they can just use that ID to complete the payment.

ManambI don't think it matters. This isn't really a retail site, Massdrop owes nothing to anyone. They announced they got a deal, and people were crazy about it and servers got overloaded.
Where else are you going to get HD-650 for $200? Thing's like Fostex TH-X00 wouldn't be possible either. They have a good amount of drop's that is cheaper than other places (some are not as good of a value as well). Are you going to stop using massdrop because of this one incident? Or will you be right back in line for when they create something like Massdrop x Audeze LCD-X for $500?

This is the worst business that I have ever dealt with online, you never plan or think ahead. I had a similar experience with the first K7XX drop when you pulled international shipping midway into the drop. Get a damn business manager who can actually run things properly. Great ideas and you do good things for the community but your execution leaves a lot to be desired. The whole customer experience is terrible and you don't deserve anyones money. I am done with Massdrop and would rather pay more for a decent service than deal with your shoddy excuses and ineptitude just to save a few bucks!

AlexPkThat's good to hear. I was able to load the page at around 6:02 AM and click "Join", but I was unable to proceed after the payment page. I tried every now and then with the same issue. The furthest I got was around 8:20 AM where I was able to go through PayPal, but the page would time out when I clicked confirm.
Does that mean that after duplicate removal, that there is a chance that these orders will be honoured?

AlexPkIf you want to completely fair, you should look at each user's login time that submitted a join request instead of the actual join request because some people may not have even been able to load up the "join" page until like 10 minutes after. I was online from 5:50am PST and couldn't even load the "join" page until like 6:04am which already puts me behind others in this case XD.
But seriously, I'm not suggesting you do this but if you start bumping people depending on "join" request timestamp, that's not entirely fair either.

I really hope you guys are able to work something out.

AlexPkHi Alex I was trying to check out at a couple of minutes past when the drop went live (so my time around 9:02 EST), this was when they said around 250 claimed. I did not get a confirmation page, email or anything in my profile under orders so I continued to try. All I was getting was the join drop button continuing to spin. I managed to get in around 2 hours later. I had 5 orders in my profile page and I see that 4 were cancelled. If you could check one of them was a 14504xx (xx since I can't recall the last two numbers, might have been 10). I had lost the ability to cancel my own order numbers by the time I saw it and thought I would let you guys sort it out. I now see one of the higher order numbers has been left in (610). I was trying to get in early hoping to get one of the allocated 1-500 serial numbers. Thanks for reading.

I understand what this must have been like, I'm assuming it was a result of not prewarming the server and them not scaling out on time. "IT" happens :). My question was that like many I was on the website since 5:50am PT and couldnt get through the checkout, have multiple transactions for 1$. But finally at around 7:00am PT or so my "Join" went through and I see that I joined under my transactions page. Do I need to be worried about being kickout if I you all start adding other people? Also, since I attempted early is there a chance for me to be back in the first 500 or will I get post 500 position based on my successful join?

Yeah, it sucks that they didn't scale to meet demand, but that's the case with a lot of online biz. I remember the same thing happening with HP when they did their "fire sale" on the HP Touchpad. I got burned in that fire sale. To their credit, they came back with a follow up sale, same terms, and I was able to get in on that. Maybe massdrop will do the same. Anyway, it isn't exactly hypocrisy, just poor planning.

I had to go to bed as I also have work the next day, left the page with the circle still spinning only to find the drop had ended and I 'm not in, and it seems like I don't have a chance.
My THX00 purplehearts were a complete FAIL that I've decided to return as you can't send me replacement cups, my headphone stands are late by a month and now this? This is very upsetting. Get your shit together Massdrop!

AlexPkI tried paying with both Paypal and Credit Card once the drop opened but kept on getting error so I closed the browser.
An hour later, I got the confirmation "Welcome to the drop" email and also can see the drop succcesfully in my transaction tab.
I did not receive any authorization hold email from Paypal nor did I see the $1 dollar pending charged from my credit card transaction.
Under the transaction tab, the 'Payment' status is 'pending'. So am I really confirmed getting the item and how can I know which payment method I used?

Thank you for making the HD6XX happening and hope you guys can sort out all the data. I am also one few who got through with a paypal authorization without any notice at Massdrop.
What I am most curious is Wills conversation with Sennheiser. I believe most of us who joined this drop are enthusiast at core with true love and passion for the product from Sennheiser. The easiest solution is to up the production volume to all the people who have joined this drop with a recorded in the system.
As you stated this is a community not kickstarter or Indiegogo nor are we buying Jordans and Yeezys. There is no fairness in online shopping. If this situation continue to happen it will end up just like the Shoe game each Saturday. Hate to end up using a bot to buy from Massdrop. If we truly are a community, we will work things out.

You wasted over an hour of my morning on a busy day, and I got nothing. Just like thousands of others. You could have chosen another day to do this for users, and you certainly could have been fully prepared and staffed on your end. You also could have limited this to members or members with previous purchases. Instead, you emailed all of your members ahead of time promoting this, and even let an automated email promoting the drop go out to members AFTER this mess started. To say you apologize for the "inconvenience" implies your team sees nothing wrong in how incredibly fucking stupid you planned this drop. I'm not mad that I didn't get a pair today, I'm pissed off that you and your team took a big steamy dump on all of us by not having any of your bases covered. You come off looking like a half assed startup, completely clueless to how many and how fast this would sell. So from my perspective the only thing MD cared about today was making sure it sold out. trappedintimeYou anger is understandable. Working for a cloud company I can say these things are sometimes hard to predict. Secondly, the election day doesnt matter, I'm pretty sure like most companies mass drop uses Load balancing and auto scaling for they website. This means the increase from 10 servers serving 1000 people normally, is automatically scalled up to 1000 servers based on when you decide to time that. There can sometimes be a latency between the traffic hitting 10 servers and the servers being scalled to 1000 server. And thats why the initial hit made the whole thing go down and restart, and then scale (Of course this is my guess, I dunno what backend and host these guys use). This is a multi tier issue not just Massdrop is responsible for making sure everything is scaled on time and running. Of course I'm not trying to support or oppose any, I just thought I would throw in my two cents, hope it helps clear some tension. :) Peace

The thing that bothers me is the sheer butthurt that everyone has over the server issues. Saying that you, yourself, should be compensated is very selfish. If Massdrop were a payed service where you pay to have these maintenance issues sorted out then I would understand the anger but this is just absurd. trappedintimeI feel ya man. I have been there, Apple's website did the same for iphone 6 and iphone 7 launch, it was unresponsive for 15mins and then when it responded all iphones were gone. So I know that feeling of frustration. I'm sure Massdrop will use todays incident as a guideline. Scaling is not very easy, without boring you with technical details, its easy to scale the GUI part of the website, but much slower for the backend databases. So what happens is the GUI part probably scaled and everyone could see the website. But since multiple people were hiting to join button more than one time, they were probably establishing thousands of connection sessions with the databases, which probably made them go nuts and reset. I deal with troubleshooting these types of issues at my work place. On top of that who know if Paypal was aware of a surge in traffic, probably made their database go nuts as well. But all is not lost, Alex said, there may be a chance this drop will reappear :) ...

I'm sure AlexPeterkin woke up today thinking it would be just another run-of-the-mill Tuesday in the world of MassDrop. "I wonder who will win the presidential election?" he probably thought as he poured his coffee before opening his community messaging app. Then BOOM! Duplicate orders; servers grinding to a halt; and a deluge of pissed-off, entitled users who can't wait to vomit their (mostly) misplaced anger towards whoever will listen. Well, Alex was listening and responding and obviously caring about the community outrage. Has nobody here tried to order a Woot Bag-o-crap or stood in line on Black Friday or been there for free ice-cream day? If I could buy you a beer, Alex, I would. Tomorrow will be back to normal.

AlexPkSo, just to add to your pile of replies (why not XD) so I was here with my f5 key at the ready about 10 minutes before the drop started, (yeah I realize the refreshing was part of the problem but i digress) so I spent about an hour sitting there trying over and over to get one of my payments to submit, but both on paypal and credit, but all I got was a oops page, or just a never ending spinning symbol. I did not get any of the one dollar charges. Though, as your friendly broke high school student about to spend his only 200 buck on this product, it would be nice to be able to get a pair, or at least have another shot at getting a pair! I really appreciate how you guys handled this situation, I know a lot of people are pissed, but I get sometimes things just happen. I have never had a problem with your services before and all of my purchases have been great! Thanks, David

I was up since 6am and nothing so far. This is really disappointin. It wasn't like I was late to he drop; I was prepared and on time. This is not fair to all the customers who are prepared but did not get to join the drop. What are your plans on fixing this?

And even at 6 in the morning the pieces sold easily. Why does it matter that it was election day? Also, there are people in other timezones. Many of their orders ship internationally.

People with multiple orders aren't necessarily people who crashed the server with multiple windows (if in fact that even happened). They're also people who placed single orders multiple times in an attempt to get through. I've yet to talk to a single person who made it to the order completion page. We only ever found out our orders had been placed by checking our transaction pages.
I tried to place an order for an hour and forty-five minutes before mine went through. At one point, I had a window open on my PC and a window open on my iPad to see whether the connection was the problem. It was only after I left work and had one window open on my phone that I received confirmations of two orders rapid-fire. That occurred at 11:05 a.m., an hour after I'd had two windows open -- one of them using WiFi and the other LTE.
Stop to consider variables before jumping on people who didn't do what you imagine.
Someone else wrote about the people who run Massdrop going out to eat artisanal cheeses and ignoring server issues for laughs -- as if any of us has a clue about how vigilant MD might or might not be.

But instead it kept people awake for almost 2 hours hoping that they could get what they want, information get buried, no clear status whatsoever. So yeah I'm beyond anger those lost hours (2 hours x ~10k people = ~20k man hours wasted) are MD fault, they saw this coming and they failed to deliver.

I understand how you feel; I had the same thing happen to me and it made me furious until the moment when the headphones sale actually registered. I'm also in the U.S., so it was strange to see people from Australia get through in the first ten minutes when it seemed pretty likely that I'd be unable to place an order at all . (No, the internet doesn't care where you live.)
My *first* thought was that MD didn't prepare enough for the massive server load. The number of requests they received should have been a clue, I groused. But *then* I remembered that I have no idea what MD did or did not do in preparation, nor am I privy to whatever specific issues they faced.
But I also remembered a situation that was very much like this one: An online offer of free tickets to eight different Kraftwerk concerts in NYC a few years back. In the end, I couldn't get through to secure tickets for my girlfriend and her twin sis even though I tried from the beginning of the tickets' availability until they were all taken. Those guys hadn't anticipated the server load, either.
These things happen. They suck, but they happen. If they happen repeatedly, there's a problem, but this is the first time I've experienced an issue getting through with Massdrop.
I'd love to know *why* it happened and what they're doing to prevent it in the future, though. Perhaps it's none of my business, but honest reassurances would be good.

My guess is that you were able to get in the drop by the cavalier tone of your post - congratulations if that is the case. I don't feel entitled and simply hope the drop is repeated so that I can participate but your suggestion that Massdrop increase their price to the detriment of others is just being a sore winner.
Given that there are twice as many people who have requested this drop now than the first time, it gives Massdrop more leverage to negotiate a better deal with Sennheiser, which means the Massdrop profit margin would increase at the same sell price. Any company would love to be in the enviable position of having potentially $5.7M in sales waiting for them ahead of receiving any product into their inventory (28.5K requests x $200/headphone). This # will only increase once the drop starts as word gets out and some members will want to buy more than one. Although I suspect Massdrop would keep doing smaller drop sizes (10K, etc) to keep interest high.
Besides, Sennheiser is not cutting into their HD 650 sales much - I personally hadn't considered the HD 650s because I couldn't justify dropping $350 on a pair of headphones previously but I can rationalize $200 for HD 6XX. I'm sure that I'm not in the minority - many are being turned onto a product they wouldn't buy otherwise. Furthermore, it is likely that there are some Massdrop members who will buy HD 6XX and, impressed with the sound quality, later upgrade to a more expensive pair of Sennheiser headphones.

I know I won't be buying a HD 650 anymore (or any other high end sennheiser headphone for 5 years since that is how long I plan to keep them) since I got this pair for so cheap. I hope sennheiser learns their lesson and not cheapen their brand. So it is best to raise the price next drop, or else people will start buying them to resell on eBay.

Cark5000 sales is not going to destroy the market of the HD650, even 25000. It will strengthen the Sennheiser brand by allowing more consumers to experience these cans that would normally be out of their price range. Thus securing brand loyalty. Microsoft have been doing this for years, even benefiting from piracy somewhat because it made the consumers stick with what they know and like.

Most of the people I've seen commenting on here, YouTube and various audio forums where the HD 6XX are being discussed were customers who wouldn't have bought the HD 650 at all given it's price point. Some of these potential customers were unaware of the HD 650 at all and would've bought Beats or something similar instead of Sennheiser. Other posts I've seen are from audiophiles who liked the HD 650s but couldn't justify keeping a pair at the higher price point so sold them years ago and are looking to buy a pair of HD 6XX to try their sound again. This is expanding the market rather than a zero sum game of people who only wanted to buy a pair of HD 650s and then buy HD 6XX. Think of how many people who never would've tried HD 650s will be listening to HD 6XXs and raving about them to their friends who then also seek out Sennheiser headphones of their own - and buy models up and down Sennheiser's product lines.
While this may be the end pair of headphones for you, there will be many people who will go on to buy other audiophile equipment - including Sennheiser's higher end headphones. It's easy to get sucked into this hobby once you hear what is possible. Even you, 5+ years from now, may find yourself seeking the Sennheiser sound signature that you've grown accustomed to after listening to the HD 6XX and I doubt that you would buy one of their lower end models as it would seem a like a downgrade.
