Hey everyone,
Hopefully the last big(ish) update from me that should answer the most popular questions and some bonus pictures.
First Up: “What’s going on with my headphones?”
We just received the shipment containing the first 1450 serials from Ireland today. Our Logistics team members have already begun sorting through each carton so that we can get these out the door no later than Tuesday. They sent over some behind the scenes pictures to show how they are labelling and separating the cartons in order to match order batches with serial numbers. In addition, they are randomly pulling a few pairs out to do one final QC check. So far everything looks great and packages should start heading out Monday.
Next Up: "Who is receiving the first shipment and what's happening with the serial numbers?"
The first 1,000 units will be sent as outlined below based on the early joiners of the drop.
Group 1: First 500 Purchasers, Serial Numbers <550 These will go to the first 500 people who were able to successfully join the drop. You can figure this out by going to your Transactions page (https://www.massdrop.com/transactions) to see if your transaction number is below MD-30891-1447594.
Group 2: First 500 Attempted Purchasers, Serial numbers <1100 This one was a little tricky and required a bit of data pulling, but these will be allotted to members in the drop based on their attempted join time, regardless of the time they successfully joined the drop.
For example: You clicked Join at 6:01 am PT and received an error until you were able to successfully join at 7:05 am PT. or You clicked Join at 6:01 am PT and never got in, but were able to join in one of the duplicate spots that opened up after the drop ended.
In both cases, the order will be based on that first attempt to Join.
If you aren't in group 1 you might be wondering, "Am I in group 2? Will I get one of those lower serial numbers?"
Good question. There isn't a simple way to identify yourself as being in this group unfortunately because everyone in group 2 joined at various times and resulted in non sequential transaction ID's.
Remaining Units: For the remaining 450 units in the first batch and all subsequent shipments, we will be fulfilling everyone sequentially based on when they joined the drop and their transaction id number.

AlexPkAny word on which courier is being used for Canada? I'd like to know if I have to keep a few thousand bucks at the door to pay for brokerage.

BjordLogistics says DHL. I'm not sure how bad the exchange rate is right now, but I think a few thousand should cover it.

BjordApparently DHL might not be too bad, I heard they charge just as bad as the other guys but I'm reading that they do a fixed $14 fee plus the applicable customs fees. Maybe it'll be okay.

AlexPkHi Alex, for Canadian orders, do we have a choice to use other courier? DHL and UPS charge at least 20% brokerage fees.

alanchun1998If what I am reading is true, DHL charges $14 flat rate brokerage plus customs fees. So if you're in ontario it should be $40 to $50 total charge on delivery... in the case customs actually flags your package to be charged.

BjordI am in Toronto. People received orders through USPS -> Canada Post before didn't get charged for any extra fees. Some got charged for HST but definitely a lot better than the rip off brokerage fees. And also want to correct you, for headphones, there shouldn't be any duties, probably HST but not more than that.

AlexPkFor future reference, have you guys considered shipping international orders first so everyone has a good chance of getting their package before Christmas? I'm in the US so shipping is fast and duty/tax free but some people (notably Canadians and Australians from what I've read) get shafted to the point where buying locally ends up being just as if not better than buying from Massdrop. Regardless, thank you very much for the way you've handled this drop. I was lucky enough to join around the 3300 mark after trying to join at 0 purchases so I look forward to shipping notifications within the next two weeks! Good luck to everyone with the shipping lottery!

AlexPkWell if you go by clicking, I hit join at 6:01 and waited for 10 mins until I got a error page, the tried again, will you go by attempt even for those that did manage to join during the original drop or does that only applies for the people that joined in the following days via email? By your logic I should be under 500, but I very much doubt there is a satisfying way to resolve this for everyone.

MooseGooseThe best way to resolve this would be for everyone to consider it a pleasant surprise if they get their headphones early or with a sub 500 serial and a very Merry Christmas/Happy Holiday that they were able to join the drop. Massdrop has taken as many variables as they can into consideration and simultaneously took both join time and transaction time into consideration so neither group that joined earlier by either time gets the short end of the stick. And they're shipping them early. I honestly cannot think of a better solution and even if they went by a different method that would satisfy a different group of people, the fact remains that anyone who joined below 500 won the lottery. It would be needless for the people who'll think they should've won the lottery to worry about what would've happened if they'd gone entirely by either join time or transaction time and will only make them miserable.

MooseGooseSame, but hopefully they might read this and be more reasonable or at least provide some decent entertainment as their tears flood the discussion when they realize they didn't get a small number instead of a big number. Perhaps there will be a market for serial number falsification in case anyone feels left out of the sekrit klub.

Bjord$40-$50 sounds about right…funny with impulse buys…sometimes it cost one more…figured with the HD6xx on their way I sold my HD650s recently for about the same…don’t need both…but maybe should have kept the 650s with their hand picked drivers and higher finish and sold the 6XX at cost once they arrive ….

AlexPkHi Alex,
Quick one regarding the domestic shipping: Will even that domestic buyer who was lucky enough to get the last "duplicate spot" receive the phones by Dec 25th?
Thanks in advance.

AlexPkJust wanted to say I appreciate what you are all doing to handle this and keep us informed. I also am really glad that a switch was made to FedEx over DHL where possible, for me living in Hawaii this probably cut my delivery time in half.
Of course USPS would be ideal and I'd love for this type of attention to be on every drop, but we as consumers want too much. I definitely take this as a win for Massdrop in my book.

AlexPkYa, just the other 95%of the planet. Ignore us (them) at your peril. I issue from within your "one of those two" region, (for the record, the smarter, richer, happier, healthier, and more sexually fulfilled one) but am always shocked at how short-sighted it is when 7 billion are dismissed.

AlexPkForgetting us out here, and while you don't, overcharging us on shipping is a huge issue. Have a specialist who knows the labyrinth of shipping. My friend was shocked today, but uppity, that I paid more in shipping for my used Linn floorstanders than the speakers themselves. He petulantly said I was foolish and said he would only buy local because of this cost. I asked him if he preferred the local beers or whiskey's and that shut him up. Probably because of language the online commerce world is balkanised. We here have several local marketplaces. However, the mighty US dollar, and it's market can still leverage the best pricing. If someone can beeyatchslap the couriers (as you seem to have) the world will be their big fracking oyster.
