Hey everyone. Got an update with good news on the cable issue. Axel wanted to give an explanation personally so I’ve put his letter to the community below.
“To the Massdrop Comunity:
The cable of the HD 6XX is just 55 inches long, not 6 ft. as announced and described. This is my fault. In the HD 6XX project we were a bit in a hurry. We wanted to be ready before Christmas. As the cable is the part with the longest lead time, I’ve decided to use the existing cable of the HD 650 Groove. I thought it is 6 ft. long, but I have not measured the length.
We will exchange the cable if you need a longer one. As a fast solution I can offer HD 650 cables (length is 9.84 ft.) because we have some of them on stock. The 6 ft. version will take longer as we have to produce them first. I have no confirmation from our cable supplier yet, but I guess it will February or March until we have it.
I am very sorry and I apologize for this.
Axel Grell “
Axel and Sennheiser are still working out the details on how to facilitate the replacement, but we wanted to keep you guys updated as we find out more and will post the complete plan as soon as they have everything finalized. I’ll see you guys in the new year next week once we hear back again.
AlexPki guess i will be camping this discussion until we get an answer as to how this exchange will be facilitated.. either way thanks alex for the update!
AlexPkThey said they'll "exchange" the cable? Does that mean we'll have to ship the current cable to them? Also +1 certainly wouldn't mind claiming one of the existing 9.84ft cables if it doesn't require an exchange. Unless they're going to be letting us choose to have a 6ft balanced XLR cable.
AlexPkIs there any way to get a balanced version cable or will MD be offering one as a drop? I actually think the included cable is a perfect size as i pair it with a portable DAP. So the shorter cable works great, but would like a balanced version.
AlexPkPlease allow a discounted cable option. I want to keep the shorter one but would like a longer one too. I don't want a free one since I will use the short one but we were mislead, so a discount would be pleasing.
AlexPk exchanging the cables will be so troublesome. As in how much does a cable cost that they require us to return the shorter one. The easiest simple solution is to just send out the correct cables to all who ordered. And is this how a professional company does an outreach to their customers? You expect us to read the forum to get updated? Sending an email update will be appropriate.
AlexPkIt's only €17,50 on Amazon.de (original Sennheiser) and you are done.
Get them, while they're hot!
(What a hassle to organize a cable-exchange...)
AlexPkSo, another way to look at this is that one could get the rest of the cable by purchasing the Apogee Groove, and end up with pretty much the HD650 Groove. A combination that was targeted at low output devices that needed a DAC/AMP. I just bought the Bravo Audio V2 in the off chance I'd use it with my PC, but maybe this is an option to consider.
AlexPkDoes this exchange mean we have to send in the current cable and wait for a new cable and thus, have no cable while we wait? Do we have to pay to have the old cable sent in? Can we maybe buy the longer cable at a discount and keep the current cable? There are some situations where the longer cable is too long and the shorter cable is a better length. So having both cables would be a benefit.
AlexPkReally appreciate the transparency guys, Axel was also really cool about it. Regardless of the cable thing, I love the cans and definitely would have still gone for the drop.
AlexPkIt's really inconvenient to follow updates in the comments, massdrop staff comments should be pinned or something.
Hope we can get the ~10ft cable soon-ish
endrjooI would like to have my short cable exchanged for the longer advertised one. Just replying here to stay updated as this information comes to us. Thanks MD and Senn.
IanismSee its exactly as I said they were low on materials. I have never seen wire anywhere like on headphone cables that soft pliable stuff cable you cant buy it anywhere man I would like to know where they get it but it sounds very boutique and is a pricey bulk buy only for real manufacturers. With Silver OCC wire all you can get is teflon and that stuff is hard and stiff but it does protect the wire very well. See I told all you guys they did what they could. You guys act like companies have endless supply nothing is made inhouse completely anymore everything is an assembly of boutique parts and they only have enough to fill production quotas. They cant stock tons of everything because the market might change and it will be time to upgrade.
AlexPkThanks Alex for the update, looking forward to the solution/ offer. (and yes, I did finally got mine after the lengthy anticipation and it's too short for practical use in my honest opinion. But luckily I already got a 10 ft locking 1/4in headphone extension lying around... which is a band-aids way for the time being )
AlexPkAlex, Is there an easier way to track updates and follow the replacement progress? the discussion section can be cumbersome to navigate through on drops with large discussions.
ukfan3108When we have an official procedure for the replacement from Sennheiser I will be sure to email it out so everyone gets it. These are just more quick updates as I get them for anyone who is reading through. Also, long term, I'm pushing for some kind of update tab or sticky feature.
HalfofaLifeBought a 10' extension at amazon that works fine. I like a shorter cable for cell phones so would like both actually. What would they do with used shorter cables anyway?
