TN and IPS panels are a no go for me because of the backlight bleed. I like playing games in a dark room and I find washed out dark scenes to be a real deal breaker. The difference between doom on an IPS or TN pannel and on a CRT/Plasma/OLED is simply stunning.
That being said, I know VA is better than IPS for blacks but how is it going to compare to CRT and OLED. Is it even comparable or is it going to be obviously worse?

DirkjrWont come close to OLED - esp when you have that IPS Glow, you can see it with some Z35P reviews. Your best bet is to get a 55" LG C7 as you rmonitor or wait for the newer 1080p OLEDs coming out.

jerroldsBleh that's what I was afraid of. I'll just keep using my CRT until OLED becomes available. At least I don't have to worry about input lag or response times.

Dirkjrinput lag on new monitors are pretty low (6ms-10ms) and response as well (<4ms). But yes - I recently got a Sony 65" OLED - and it made me want to get one as a gaming monitor.
OLED = 0ms response and the LG OLEDs have decent input lag (<25ms)
That contrast ratio cuz of pure blacks...
a 50" OLED mounted 4' away would blow any gaming monitor out of the water

jerroldsSee I would consider 25ms to be unacceptable. Ever tried playing guitar hero on an LCD after a CRT? In games like CSGO or super meat boy, the kind of games where fractions of a second matter I really don't want to have to worry about the monitor getting in the way of gameplay. That's been my gripe with modern monitors. I can get a gaming TN pannel thats fast enough to negate speed concerns but then the image quality is poor. I could get an oled TV or plasma but then the input lag is noticeable. I tried cutting the difference and getting an IPS display but found the bleed to be too much. So I'm still here stuck with a massive CRT who's electronics aren't getting any younger. I really hate to spend $500+ on something that's going to be worse in at least one way than what I have had for more than a decade

Dirkjr25ms at 60hz, it would be less than that at 120hz.
The energy/space savings of a IPS@120/144hz, flicker-free display and increased brightness (can even the Sony FD Trinitron BR960 hit over 100nits?)
Unless youre an enthusiast about retro/CRT style gaming - the 20ms is a small trade off imo. I know id personally adjust in about 5mins of playing or less

jerroldsThe CRT I have already runs bright enough to be uncomfortable in a dark room. In a well lit room it underperforms but like I said I mostly use it in a dark room at night anyway (probably why I'm one of the few who uses one) It also runs at 2048x1536@85 hz and can go as high as 120hz on lower resolutions.
I have used a 2017 LG 4K LCD TV and the input lag was considerable. The easiest way I know to tell is to try something sensitive like guitar hero. Hitting the notes was VERY hard until I dialed in at least 15ms of delay at which point the game seemed to play like normal. Now for 99% of games that probably doesn't make a difference. But I don't doubt that in something like competitive counter strike it would make a difference.
That being said it may be worth my time to do what you suggest and get an OLED TV which definitely outclasses the crt but then just keep the CRT for the few games that would benefit.

DirkjrI don't play guitar hero, but after adjusting the input settings for frets on fire (similar to guitar hero), I was able to play with an IPS monitor, so I finally put my Sony GDM-FW900 out to pasture (I had the HP variant, got it for free when Virginia Tech was throwing some out. I actually had three over the years but two failed and were not repairable).

The thing I am most concerned about that I have not yet seen addressed is the backlighting. One reason I stuck with the CRT was so long was that I could crank the refresh rate up over 100 Hz. All the flat panels at the time had noticeable flicker, just like the classic 50-60Hz of a cheap consumer CRT. I was only very recently able to go to modern technology with the rise of constant-current backlighting. I dont care if the pixels can refresh at 100Hz+ if the backlight is at 60Hz. My flicker threshold is very high, on the order of 75-80Hz depending on lighting conditions, and I will only consider panels that support this.

dorkvaderYeah I don't actually play guitar hero either but my point was if the input lag on a modern. TV is enough to very clearly affect gameplay in that game then it certainly can have a negative impact on other games. And yeah I'm currently running this monitor at 120hz just to keep things very smooth. I can't say I've ever experienced backlight flicker but anything bellow 70hz becomes visible to me

DirkjrTN panels don't have backlight bleed, at least no modern decent ones. IPS most certainly have it a lot of time though.
Backlight bleed isn't about colors, it's about odd bright spots that are noticeable, caused by the backlighting, not washed out blacks.

whomad1215It's not the IPS glow or faulty backlight bleed that I'm objecting to it's the constant light shining through even solid black images. The pixels never go truly black. I had always heard that called backlight bleed. But either way I can't stand how it renders dark scenes grey when the "black" on my screen is far brighter than the room I'm in.

DirkjrJust curious whats your CRT? Its amazing to see so many CRT lovers here! I also cannot imagine playing CS 1.6 on nowadays monitors... I had Sony GDM-5402 and was browsing on 1600x1200@96hz and playing usually on: 1280x960@120hz with zero input lag and everybody was suspecting me that I am cheater :D miss those times...

BananiqI am using a ViewSonic P225f-3 not quite as good as the GDM but I was able to buy it new in box just a few years ago.
