Hey Everyone, posting to let you know this drop will be extended to the end of the month to provide more time for reviewers (most notably Linus) to share their content.
Our order is already in the production queue, this extension will have no impact on the ship date.
Because of some intricacies around payment processor rules, we need to process payments for all the purchases. This normally happens at the end of the drop, so it will remove your ability to cancel directly from your transactions page. You still have the ability to cancel any time between now and the end of the drop, but you'll need to reach out to support via your transactions page to handle the request.
Thanks for your patience through these extensions and your continued interest in the Vast! The timer for this drop will change later today.
Check back around 5pm PST today for some gameplay footage (pubg and rocket league) we captured last night per the requests in this discussion.

WillGood on you guys, the fact that the drop was going to close before a better review was out made me not want to buy it on principle and not support a company with bad business practices, glad to see that that isn't the case.

EleventHourGist: Best gaming monitor for the money.
His top cons are:
1. The menu navigation for the onscreen display is backwards (up and down go left and right, left and right go up and down, etc).
Note on this point, we provided a brief to all reviewers of the Vast explaining the differences between their review samples and the production units. The OSD control scheme was at the top of the list. Production units will have intuitive controls as we had planned. Every review has talked about this so far so either nobody reads the docs we send, or they need something to complain about and this is the best they can get.
2. There is some gloss plastic on the back of the monitor
3. He doesn't like our video because we say "fast as any" TN panel and this is 100hz when TN panels go up to 240hz.

Top pros are:
Everything listed on the page (resolution, refresh rate, response times, contrast, etc etc)
Great color accuracy (this is IMO the most important part of the review because it's technical validation for something you'd otherwise have to experience)

WillI was totally waiting for this review. Alas, of no fault of massdrop, what I saw was a bash of the marketing claims and a recommended buy at this price point. (both of which don't really matter anyway). What I wanted to see was color, backlight, bleed and ghosting testing. I am one of the first to join new tech, but Acer, Asus, Massdrop and probably others are sourced from the same Chinese company which has little to no quality control (owned by Acer BTW). As much as would love support a new and better brand, it seems that a monopoly is the story of today regardless how much we pay.
That leaves me where I started at. With not a single monitor that can give me reasonable assurance that I will not have monitor problems. Two months ago, I bought the 49" Samsung and I am still having to call them every week waiting for an RMA. With Massdrop's business model combined with the less than ideal yield of good screens shipped from the manufacturer, it seems like russian roulette, The only assurance I get from the bigger companies is an eventual refund or replacement.
I love the price and features except for the lack of g-sync. If it had g-sync, I might be willing to take the risk. But at this point, I can't even guarantee a good screen would keep up with my 1080 ti.
EDIT: If I had an AMD Vega already card, I would totally buy this.
EDIT: I complained about the lack of quality in this review BEFORE it got posted on youtube (not posted at this time). Hopefully Linus will reconsider and post more technical info in the review, If he does, I could even turn my decision. But as a better alternative to cheap korean knockoffs, I am not sold.

"I love the price and features except for the lack of g-sync. If it had g-sync, I might be willing to take the risk. "
Did you think Linus was going to tell you the panel magically developed GSync capabilities?
I'm being a little bit sarcastic, but this panel has a much better guarantee than any of the big manufacturers plus superior features at a much lower price. You admit that you've had terrible experience all around with the big guys. And you know that what you want (100% perfect QC) does not exist.
Seems like you're being your own worst enemy here.

jloopy212I am my worst enemy . You got that right. By I am just a dude that wants his money to produce a result. I am not embarrassed to say that if there is a top-end monitor, it has been in my cart and removed, been ordered and canceled, been received and returned (multiple times in some cases). Of course each stage of that requires a higher level of displeasure to perform. For example, the 49" Samsung was great but I had to crawl under my desk to unplug it and replug it in to get it to work after a computer sleep or shutdown. I even built a new EVGA system thinking there might be something strange the ROG one I last built. I am not totally crazy and I know that if I go with the upcoming 200Hz monitors, I will have to turn them down because they will exceed the video card ability as well as cost at least 3 times this one.
In the end, I just want 100+Hz, g-sync for the demanding times, widescreen, zero backlight bleed, reasonable color and a resolution like this one because the Samsung was too short at 1080 from real life experience.

TahruI mean, the problem is still NVidia and GSync it sounds like. If you're stuck in their little monopoly then yeah you don't have many choices.
At the same time, that's hardly an issue with this monitor. Dating myself with this example, but it's a little going to the store and checking out an awesome DVD player with every feature you could want at a great price.
Except the thing is you have a huge VHS collection and no interest in upgrading so why are you looking at DVD players?

jloopy212Good point! I hate that AMD and Nvidia can't agree on something as simple as a sync technology. Seems to me it is everyone's interest to work with as many monitors as possible, I fear that both companies may be more interested in hurting each other than gaining consumer happiness.

TahruIt's not really an AMD vs NVidia as much as NVidia vs consumers - AMD is basically a good actor here.
The only reason that NVidia GPUs don't work with Freesync monitors is because NVidia has disabled compatibility. As a result, if you have an NVidia GPU, they get to sell you the same monitor for about a $200 upcharge because they maintain a monopoly on the market. It's a good racket for NVidia and bad for everyone else, but especially their customers.

jloopy212I am not an authority on this so take it as a 3rd person grain of salt. But I read in multiple places that Freesync is not open source. If that is true, it means that g-sync and freesync are commercially competing technologies probably with the soul intent of gaining market dominance by making monitor companies choose sides, Even if that is true, it is obvious Nvidia is abusing their current market edge to push away the competitor and rape the consumer at the same time. As the current underdog, AMD would likely adopt g-sync if the price was more reasonable so they could compete and on the other side Nvidia won't adapt freesync because it is too their competitive advantage.
If it was up to us consumers, I am willing to bet that sync would just be sync. We as consumers are being punished by this war; however, without this war we would probably be using VGA connectors still. A curse and blessing of capitalism.
In my honest opinion, it is the cheap chinese slave labor that brings us where we are with everyone buying the same screens from the same greedy company who doesn't know a thing about quality. I could easily buy one monitor over another based on quality, but all we get is sub par from all sides because of AU Optronics, AU Optronics is the the #1 problem in the monitor business today simply because they have no competition to drive them to make quality products.

TahruYeah, you have a lot of stuff that is incorrect in there; I'd suggest some more research.
Freesync is based on the VESA adaptive sync standard, which is an open source format. The only requirement for Freesync is that the scalar have adaptive sync capabilities (old scalers do not). GSync is proprietary technology - AMD is not able to "adopt" GSync even if they were so inclined. The requirements for GSync are complicated and include installing a proprietary module + engineering + NVidia licensing, which works out to an extra $200-$300 in NVidia's pocket. The reason NVidia does not adopt Freesync is because why would they if their customers keep drinking the Kool Aid?
The odd thing is, it is up to consumers. You can vote with your wallet and go with the consumer-friendly solution. It's just that not everyone is well informed on the subject and NVidia is very adept at spreading misinformation. Now if you know the scam and you still buy into it then yeah, no sympathy.
It's funny that you're complaining about the panel maker here that is delivering a truly amazing product at a great price point but your response to blatant anti-consumer behavior from NVidia is "lol capitalism right?"
Put another way Massdrop/AU Optronics are the solution, NVidia is the problem.

Well, the facts as we understand them are that this is a high quality monitor (as confirmed by Linus) at an extremely attractive price point. There may ultimately be some issues with QC once the panel enters production, but that's not a given plus the panel has a pixel perfect guarantee - something none of the other retailers are going to offer.
Let me use an analogy to illustrate a point on quality and price. I'm a bit of a shoe hobbyist - I have ~20-25 pairs with an average price of something like $600-$800 per pair. Now your average person probably spends ~$150 on dress shoes from whatever department store that are basically trash-tier in terms of quality; if you're a little more fashion savvy you might spring for a pair of Allen Edmonds in the ~$300 range, which is what most people would consider a quality dress shoe.
The thing is, if you know shoes and you pick up a pair of new AEs, you can easily find a dozen or so odd defects. If you want to step up to a slightly better shoe at ~$600-$800 then you can get to the point where there are maybe 3-5 defects. If you're someone that is really, really discerning, then you can push into the top tier of ready-to-wear shoes starting in the $2k range which will be defect-free. Notice that as the batch sizes get smaller, the quality actually goes up - for example, St. Crispin's makes ~1,500 pairs of shoes per year.
Now does the fact that AEs aren't G&Gs make them a questionable company? No. They make high quality mass market shoes at a reasonable price point that are more than adequate for 99.5% of people buying shoes.
My point here is 1) if you're buying mass production products, there is going to be variation in quality simply because of math and 2) if you want to get to the extreme edges of quality then you need to be prepared to pay through the nose for it.

wow so the logic behind this is from what read... a company responsible for roughly 80% of monitor shipments in the world... has the highest number of defective units... so lets say they produce 1,000,000,000 monitors screen's a year and have 10,000 defective. That is easily enough to cause "Internet Outrage Over Quality"... that is a 1% defective rate. I say that is pretty darn impressive. Then on top of that we aren't even taking into account Asus, HP, anyone else quality control. Thats just assuming that the monitors are directly defective solely based on the screens.
From what i have read these monitors are super nice and If I had the 549 I wouldn't hesitate to get one. Shoot Honestly I like to have 2 of them thought not sure I could handle that much screen real estate honestly.

If you've got the budget, Dell's AW3418DW is now on sale for 1000 USD from their own website and is a great option. Otherwise there are a few other economical options available online that might suit you better.
