Why is the shipping 170 to Europe when the 34" Viotek costs 50 to ship?

SeasonsI would also be interested in hearing peoples thoughts on this. How is there such a large difference for similarly sized products?

BrendanMarshIt's pretty much just a matter of logistics and the difference between MD's in-house products and their "standard" offerings.
The Vast hast to be built in China over the next say 6-8 weeks or so. The completed order will get loaded into a shipping container and be sent to the U.S. via ocean freight presumably to go either into MD's warehouse or possibly some kind of cross-dock/direct ship situation depending on the arrangements.
Now at that point, the landed cost for all the monitors is exactly the same. When you layer in international shipping is when the costs start to stack up. Given the tiny batch sizes here, everything to Europe is going via air freight + local ground delivery, which runs maybe 5-6x as much as the corresponding ground shipments to the U.S. Insurance is also a big factor here - it's much higher for international shipments in general.
On top of all this, MD is guaranteeing this monitor arrives pixel perfect and providing a 1-year warranty and covering return shipping. All this adds up - Will has said previously they expect to lose money on international shipments of this monitor because of higher RMAs due to issues with shipping. I believe he actually said that with the benefit of hindsight, they would not have offered international delivery on this drop and probably will not do so going forward.
By contrast, the Viotek is just drop-shipped like everything else MD does. I'm not that familiar with Viotek's footprint, but if they already have retail availability in Europe then they have a distribution network that they can leverage already, which significantly reduces the variable component of shipping costs. Plus, no guarantee and no warranty from MD - I'm sure they don't want broken monitors arriving on people's doorsteps, but depending on the arrangement with Viotek, it may be much less costly to resolve.
