Should I get these or the K712 Pro for $260?

MrsugarloveI assume the K712 Pro are used. Even if not, it's not worth the $60 difference IMO. Go with these, save yourself some money. Now for the same price +/- $15 I'd take the K712 for its slightly better finishing all-round.

MrsugarloveDefinitely 712 I heard them both and imo it is MUCH better, I'd pay $250-300 for the 712 and I would not even consider the 7xx unless it was $100 or less even. This is not just do to sound but also build quality 7xx materials deteriorate fast

MassEDUThank you for responding. It says new but after looking up reviews for the website (eglobalcentral) I think I'll steer away from buying anything on their site.

MrsugarloveIn theory they should be more or less the same phone so it's just a matter of which color scheme one prefers but I do find my current K7XXs slightly more balanced and congruent than my previous Austrian made K712s, not too sure why but the base on the712s appeared more disembodied, less integrated and overall imaging was less focused, maybe the drivers were not as well matched. I like to call the K7XX the poor mans HD800Ss with which I have them paired after letting go my HD700s, HD650s and HD6xxs....

bravomailBoth but that's how I tell what's good if they don't hold up to the old transport in a bag of bolts with coffee spilled on them then they just aren't gonna do it for me shame on massdrop on this one

Petronas44But if you don't do that "in a bag of bolts with coffee spilled on them" the AKGs are fairly resilient, the same design and material has been used for most of their studio monitors for over 30 years, they may not look tough but they do hold up over time. My 240DFs from 1982 looked no worst for wear after daily use in the studio for 35 years...lol.

Petronas44 Sorry…do not believe we’ve met….so took the liberty of checking out your previous posts..and I see for some reason you’re royally upset about the Massdrop K7XX with regards to the quality of sound and construction. But seriously I’ve owned the K701s and K712s , both made in Austria and now these 7XXs and they’re really not that different… for all intense and purposes I see no differences between the 12s and XXs…would have been nice if AKG did do something about the elastic for their self adjusting headbands, introduced decades ago, which will deteriorate over time and the clear plastic guide first introduced with the K701s will on occasion crack. Some mention the “China Rattle” but that was also on my 35 year old 240dfs….lol..bottom line though…the 7XXs should if properly cared for last as long as any other similar AKG. I see one thing we can agree on and that’s the HD700s…loved mine for years …but eventually let them go once I got the HD800S….. So… not here to argue …just passing on my own “hands-on” experience.

robert.burnsNot the only thing we agree on agree the k7xx does sound more similar than different from 702 & 712, though the differences are fairly subtle and all have essentially the same signatures my preference for sound through a thorough abc the 712 was my preference doesn't have to be yours and when it came to build, out of the ones I spent time with, I honestly believe the 712 was built the best and I'm not in the market for a k7 anything right now If or when I am I would buy a used austrian 712 for 200 or slightly less all do to preference, I never meant to come off hostel just honest about how I felt about my experience if I spent my own money and the same happened to me it would be a different story, let me apologize in advance to anyone who loves this headphone and is offended by this comment just enjoy what you enjoy let me enjoy what I enjoy lol

Petronas44I'm cool : ).....I was surprised by the sound quality of these K7XXs I currently have...maybe just lucky...or the drivers have indeed been better matched. From my review on the K712s. "The 700s for me also have slightly better attack and decay, snares having a wonderful snap and bass notes are a little tighter and central images are less recessed. But the K712s as I noted earlier are no slouch either, running off the Bryston BHA-1 they are a lot less warm sounding than when I first heard them paired with the 25-30 year old receiver mentioned above, bass was also better controlled as was focus and detail but not quite the linearity of the HD700s......." https://www.head-fi.org/f/showcase/akg-k712-pro.16244/reviews#review-11476 Again I can only go by memory but they appear to be the same to me...you may indeed be right with regards to build quality between the Austrian K712s (they are now also built in China)...time will tell...but I guess as long as I don't drop the XXs they should be fine..lol.

robert.burnsI know they don't have the Austria plant anymore they do most production in China and they have a place in Slovakia now that replaced the Austrian one but I don't know where current 712's come from I know the first 812's were made in Austria and then switched over to the Slovakia plant. Do you still own the hd800 I just bought a beyerdynamic t1 first gen I got it for $450 in nice shape if I didn't find it so cheap I was gonna get a used hd800 but it was going to be around $750 it was hard to go for the t1 I've had this chip on my shoulder so long that's not gonna go away until I just own an 800 is it allot better than the hd700 and have you ever heard a t1

Petronas44There are still a few 712s "made in Slovakia" floating around but AFAIK they are all now made in China (I could be wrong)...so the current 7XXs and 712s may in fact may now be identical except for color....who knows. The HD800S are currently my main phones....didn't warm up to the original 800s...much preferred my 700s but the slightly more engaging "S"s won me over. The 7XXs are now my "current" ancillary phones, casual listening, movies etc.......the HD700s are too close to the 800s so make them redundant in my set-up and my HD6XXs and HD650s just never did it for me, they're very good but just a touch too polite and laid back for my preferences.......although the K712s and XXs, more than any previous AKGs, do IMHO sound closer to the Senn HD600 series but with a bit more life and enveloping sound stage.

robert.burnsYea the 800s is out of my price range for now, guess I'll just have to see how it goes with the t1 and that could be that the new 712 and 7xx are the same I've only ever seen the old Austrian one

Petronas44Current headphone prices are silly, I just happened to have some extra funds come my way and thought I'd invest them wisely... in my hobby... : ) I've just inquired on Headfi about the made in China 712s so hopefully someone will have a definitive answer. https://www.head-fi.org/f/threads/the-akg-k712-pro-support-and-impressions-thread.659251/page-335#post-13471522

robert.burnsGood for you I don't think it is a waste of money if you work hard and want something nice then go for it I see how some people might think it's crazy but I'd rather spend my money on something physical rather than extravagant vacations or going out on the weekend and blowing a bunch of money and then have nothing to show for it but to each there own. What kind of amp do you use with the 800s

Petronas44Got to agree...vacations come and go (very quickly).....been using a Bryston BHA-1 for few years, balanced if I can, again a little pricey but happy with it...and a 20 year warranty so definitely longer lasting than a vacation. lol. Recently picked up the very affordable...SMSL sApII TPA6120A2 headphone amp... and has IMHO excellent synergy with the K7XXs...haven't tried it with the 800S...too lazy to pull out my single ended cable. : )
