If you take a look at the stats, item for item of both phones, the AKG K7XX appear to be the AKG Q701 with different badging. Every stat is the same. No disrespect to Massdrop intended but the Q701 phones come with (2) oxygen free cables and they are currently ($20) cheaper on Amazon. Again, no disrespect intended.

TheGeeManWhat about the Q701? I'm not sure if Observer1000 edited their post, but the K701 isn't mentioned there at all.

lvince951. From the AKG wbesite: Q701 stats- http://us.akg.com/akg-product-detail_us/q701blk.html 2.From the Massdrop website: K7XX stats- https://www.massdrop.com/buy/akg-x-massdrop-k7xx-limited-edition-ruby-red
Other than the "Red Trim" the two phones have exactly the same stats. 1. Frequency response, 2. OHM impedance, 3. input power rating, 4. voice coil construction, 5. sensitivity 6. weight.
The only apparent difference is the fact that the Q701 phones come with both a (3) meter and a (6) meter oxygen free copper cables.
If you compare them you'll find that the stats of both headphones have the same identical values listed.
Again, "I'm just saying....."

Observer1000So let me guess, K701, K702, K712, Q701 and K7XX all sound the same because they have the same specs?
You're saying the Fostex TH600 and TH-X00 sound the same because they have the same specs?
Yeah sure, the tuning of the driver, dampening, etc. are all irrelevant right?
You're totally clueless about headphones and way out of your league.

lvince95lol calm down son. Multiple people have compared said cans and the differences are pretty minor, especially the fostex 600/x00. What you're getting with the K7XX and TH-X00 are practically the same headphones for half the price (or less). They don't sound the same, but the house sound is still there and the tweakings are minor (changing pads on Fostex especially).

Observer1000It's silly but most headphone specs mean basically nothing until you get to impedance curves and frequency response graphs. Taking the example of impedance, it's displayed as a single value "65ohms", but in reality, the impedance of the driver differs as you move across frequency. Is it 65 ohm resistance at 500hz? How about 6000hz?
Same for "frequency range", sure the headphone covers 50hz - 39500hz (whatever the spec says) but that doesn't tell you anything about which frequencies are emphasized or reduced, only says it's capable of producing those tones.

lvince95After reading your remarks, I thought perhaps there is a difference between the AKG Q701 and the AKG K7XX. To clear up the matter I phoned AKG technical support US at (1 800-458-5534) and spoke with a tech named Raffiel.
I was told that the AKG Q701 is produced in the consumer division of the company and the AKG K7XX is produced in the professional division of the company.
I then said the two headphones list the exact same specs. Is there any difference between the two headphones with regards to tuning or how they deliver sound or how they sound? Raffiel stated that the two headphones used the exact same capsule and other than cosmetics, the two headphones are exactly the same. After composing this post, I called Raffiel back and read what I had written. After being reassured that I was reporting the fact correctly, I got his permission to post this information,
Here's the number again. AKG US Tech support (1 800-458-5534) call them and ask for yourself.
I'm not trying to be a spoiler but I do like to observe. Thus the name "OBSERVER 1000"
"I'm just saying"

Observer1000I was curious since I bought in on this drop. I just talked to Rafael. And the k7xx has more bassy sound due to the cups. The cosmetics increase the sound slightly but the capsules are the same. The pads themselves increase bassy feeling by 3db. So your right....and your wrong. Good follow up though. Nothing mentioned about matched transducers. Which the q701 didn't do.

Observer1000So why is the Q701 made in the consumer division and the K7xx made in the Pro? (Rhetorical - understandably for driver matching and higher grade drivers etc) The "tech " Raffiel is not an AKG Engineer and his statement "other than cosmetics, the two headphones are exactly the same" proves he did not even know the two models have different Earpads so I doubt anything the "tech" said is even relevant or believable. Most likely read a scripted response.
That being said half the time Engineers do not fully know every detail of a product they have partly designed and the reasons for choices made in the final product. Small companies have the advantage of intimate design knowledge.
Whoever made the arrangements for the Massdrop K7xx design might actually know what driver is installed in the K7xx but isn't at liberty to discuss for marketing reasons.
I suppose all we can do is ask Massdrop to guarantee us that this Red/Black K7xx is exactly the same in driver and design as the K7xx All Black version except for color enhancements?

Well I suppose working 25 years as an engineer and overseeing product manufacturing. Being a working musician, having close friends that have also been engineers for various audio companies such as Alesis, JBL, Aurasound, Urei including attending a lot of AES/NAMM conferences, acquired literally 1000's of pieces of audio gear and spent time in numerous reputable recording studios might bias me a bit. I believe there is always something new to be learned. I learn by others taking the time to share their knowledge and hopefully I can do the same.
There are many Industry people on MD and experts lurking in these forums.

ApolloSharp if you are not going to add anything useful please find another forum to attack people on. All I learned from you was of your personal hateful insecurity.

ApolloSharp admitting that they are in fact a Troll is the most sincere and insightful comment that I have seen ApolloSharp post on Massdrop.

I-SlimJim-II'm pretty sure the 7XX is the same (only made in China with more plastic) as the first edition of the K702 65th AE, which had flat cups. The second editions, and the K712 have angled cups. The K702 AE are more often than not cited as the best version of the K701/702/712 range.

KaneDWilliamsI don't think the K712 has angled cups but it does have memory foam cups and I have a pair of the K7XXs and they have memory foam cups as well. Read the review I linked to where the reviewer tried every version and even swapper ear cups between them.

I-SlimJim-IYou may be right about the K712, but I do remember a discussion when the K7XX (which I also own) first came out that they had the same flat cups as the first edition K702 AE, not the later angled cups. I thought the K712 retained the angled cups but I am probably wrong on that. I will read the review as it sounds interesting.

I-SlimJim-IAfter reading that, it seems the AKG K7XX is the same as the 2nd edition of the 65th AE. I still remember other's saying it was the same as the first edition. Either way, it's a steal at $199 and I love mine. I mix music in them and my mixes are so much better, translating well on to other music systems. I've had pro engineers and mastering engineers say mix mixes are fine, no issues, so that proves to me the K7XX is a good fit for my ears!

KaneDWilliamsI mainly use mine for gaming and just listening to music but they are by far the best cans I have ever owned. They replaced a $180 gaming headset I had for many years and are soo much better for positional audio and have much more of that fun factor. I am just driving them using the on-board audio which has suite my needs. I will eventually get an amp though to be able to get a bit more volume without having to have the system volume at 80%..
