I am relatively new to Massdrop and am bummed as I just ordered me a set of the AKG 533 pros (drop just ended).
I already own. Beyerdynamic DT 990 pro 250, a Sony MDR-V6 and sold a brand new pair of AKG 240 mk 2's so I could buy the 533s. Now these are available. I only have one head and really shouldn't buy every sexy new set of cans that are offered.
My point (finally) why should I join this drop if I already own a very nice set of headphones in the dt 990 pros and potentially the 533 pros. Are these significantly better - or just subjectively a little more of this and a little less of that.
Ps i am also looking to upgrade my recently purchased and decent Fiio E17K ALPEN 2 USB DAC Headphone Amplifier as it just doesn't seem to have enough to drive the dt 990 pros at 250 ohms

StereoguyObjectively speaking, it might be better if you saved up for dacs/amps

siidheeshI am already doing my research. The fiio e17k alpen 2 is nice but I think an upgrade is in order. It just seems that I may not be satisfied with anything less than $500. I want a pair of these akgs also but will they sound significantly better than the beyerdynamic dt 990 pros if properly driven by a better dac/amp though.

StereoguyThe K7XXs are bass boosted, some people like them and some find them too muddy. You can compare the frequency response graphs here: http://www.headphone.com/pages/build-a-graph Note however: 1) No K553s on there but the K550s are close enough. 2) No K7XXs either, but it's akin to a bass boosted K712 (+3dB)

siidheeshNot muddy at all! I even think they sound a little flat compared to my Harman Kardon CLs and Beats Solo HDs. I feel like I have been transported to valhalla.

kuziguDepends on each pair of ears really. As for the flatness, they are reference headphones I guess (but not very neutral!). Zeos (Z Reviews) did mention that they have a V-shape freq response (high bass and treble, low mid-range)
On the topic of audio subjectivity, it's best to try out headphones at local stores before committing. The M50xs are wildly popular but were crapped on by z reviews haha, so it depends on what you want individually

kuziguI don't know about the HKs, but yeah, I do hope they have a better sound than Beats Solos :-)
