I'm new to high end headphones. I've been using the earbuds that came with my phone and some cheap skullcandy over the ear headphones. I'm looking to upgrade and I want to buy a good pair of over the ear headphones. I mainly use headphones to listen to music and podcasts through my phone. I was leaning towards the HE 350 on here but after reading the reviews it doesn't seem like people like them. I saw a couple people say these AKGs are a better option.
I'm now realizing that high end headphones are made to be paired with an amp but I have no interest in using an amp since I will be using them mostly on the go.
So my question is, can these be used without an amp and just plugged directly into my phone? And if I were to buy these could anybody recommend a cable with inline mic/volume control thats compatible with these headphones and a carrying case that they would fit in?
Also if anybody has any suggestions of other over the ear headphones that may better suit my needs, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

BBack22From my knowledge, the connector for the cable is unique to these headphones meaning I doubt you will be able to put in an in-line mic. If you want a good portable headphones, my friend seems to love his audio technica m50x, and I hear good things about them. I don't own either of the headphones I mentioned, but I hope this still helped you in some way.

BBack22These would not be my first choice for on-the-go use. They are big and open back. They leak sound because of the open nature of them, and while they are damn comfortable, they are a bit cumbersome for on-the-go use. At the desk they're great, but there are definitely better options for portability. These also quite like an amp, although they can play music out of a phone, just not very loudly.
For on-the-go use I'd recommend closed backs or similar headphones such as the Hifiman Edition S. The white color comes in at 149$ at amazon, and they are over-ear portable cans that have covers you can use to switch from open to closed, decreasing sound leakage a fair good amount. They also have a standard 3.5mm jack on them for easy cable replacement.
Good luck finding the right headphones for you!

BBack22If you want headphones that are to be used on-the-go, you need closed back headphones. Open back headphones such as these AKGs, the Sennheiser HD600, HD650 etc leak a lot of sound, and hence are not suitable for public spaces.
I use an Audio Technica M40x - and I find them pretty good for the price. These are closed back, have a reasonably flat frequency response, and can be snagged for under $100 (have even seen deals at $75)
Also, you may want to think of investing in DAPs (digital audio players) that have a built in amplifier and DAC. These are portable and can be used on the go with your headphones. I use a Fiio X3 (2nd generation), and find it a good combination with my M40x.
If you have the ability, please listen to any headphone before you buy them. Sound preferences are very personal - and hence each one's mileage may vary.
Good luck with your search.

BBack22zeos has a lot of sound demos for headphones which can give you a general idea of what you will hear if you decide to purchase them. Pretty much all of his reviews are based on his own taste, so don't take them too seriously. Pick what you think sounds good. Btw his channel is called Z Reviews.

BBack22@Scrintch @Agra @anandpkumar Thank you all very much for your input. It's much appreciated. You are all very kind for helping out a noob like me.
I'm leaning towards the Hifiman edition s. I like the versatility it provides by giving you the option to use them as an open back or closed back.
