I went along with Massdrop and felt ok for We Knife (Chinese) to be involved with Bob Terzuola on a one time basis. I did not realize that Massdrop is taking as many master knife makers as possible and paying them to sell out to We Knife more often than not. This is disappointing, and I am unsubscribing to Massdrop. Made in China should be an exception to the rule, which is what I thought when I moved to purchase Terzuola's CTF. Let me know when you offer me something made here. America First, stop patronizing our great knife makers.

WoodyBaltoI think this is a legit question that should precede all the redundant commentary about how it’s disappointing that this knife is made in China, and how it should be made instead in the US for the same price. If there is an American owned company making knives of this quality and price in the US with a legal documented work force, who are paid comfortable wages and given medical benefits, then name them so that everyone complaining about the fact that this knife is made in China has an alternative company to support. If that company doesn’t exist yet, then everyone complaining is really just complaining when there are no actual options to deliver the same product at the same price locally. If you are willing to pay more for it to be produced in the US, then just buy the ones Brad makes himself. If you are willing to pay more in general for USA made knives then just buy USA made Benchmade titanium framelocks for $300-400. Buy Chris reeves. If you want this knife with these materials, this level of fit and finish, while not exceeding $120, then please name the US company that can do this so the china complainers and massdrop staff have an actual avenue to pursue, otherwise it’s just whining.

lobsterAnother aspect to consider is all the American jobs you're supporting by buying, even though the knife itself is made in China. You're supporting an American designer, an American distributor, and an American steel maker(S35VN is made by Crucible steel in America).
I'm all for a knife manufactured in America, but it's a little more complicated than just asking where the manufacturer is located. How many components of American made knives are manufactured in China? Bearings, steel, washers, screws, scales? Does it really count as Made in America if the constituent parts are made in east Asia?
Sorry for the off-topic ramble, but I think this is an aspect of the debate that is often missed.

Morrowind542@lobster I think is is not wrong to ask the questions though in the pursuit of locating a vendor in China who is not abusive to human rights. Though it may not be possible to source the labor in the states for assembly, where is massdrops due diligence to ensure their suppliers are not predatory and we are not receiving trash from China.

jscrubAlright now you're just showing your ass, WE Knife is an established and well respected company, they typically use either Bohler M390 or Crucible CPM-S35VN, and I've never heard a peep of scandal about them.
At some point, random displays of concern for labor in other nations just looks like nationalism.
Besides, there is no U.S. company making comparable quality production framelocks other than Zero Tolerance.
It's $200 for a Spyderco Military, which is a G10 and steel liner lock with a pretty utilitarian build. It's what, $300+ for a similarly vanilla Benchmade framelock, which comes with a good warranty and miserable quality control?
Have you considered that some of us are actually thrilled at the opportunity to get a WE knife for such a modest price? This manufacturer is nobody's meat puppet, they are the best regular production knife company at the moment.
Their competition is basically ZT and the companies like Reate and CKF who are making volume midtechs. I like ZT, but they have a few designs I'm interested in and otherwise I don't care for their products.
There is so much more to life and the market than simple questions of 'where built?' or insinuations that Chinese manufacturing is solely performed by modern day slaves.

OmniseedZT and Kershaw are both owned by Kai. As is shun kitchen knives, so all that money is going back to Japan anyway. Hard to call ZT an American company.

OmniseedSo they don't use chinese steel blanks acquired by massdrop purchasing?

jscrubCPM S35VN is an American steel, M390 is German, made in Uddeholm.
@Thorn74 Usually when people want to see American-made products they are talking about where the manufacturing is located, not the corporate offices. ZT makes all of their knives in the U.S. I am not aware of any other serious U.S.-based competitor to WE in the framelock arena.

OmniseedBuying American is a great stance. I'm all for it, but I was pointing out it's not always as simple as that in today's global economy.

Thorn74When you have bait and switch (as with this Drop), you tell me different. Nowhere to turn, Massdrop might as well be Foreign, because they do not answer anything.

mhwolfI don't like it. and i'm either selling it, (I have someone interested) or sending it back if they agree to a full refund, including return shipping. Still waiting for support to reply. Hopefully MD learns something from this fiasco. I have bought a lot of knives from MD and have many more on the way. I'm not canceling my other orders because of this. This all sucks but it's not the end of the world.

Thorn74There's no bait and switch with this drop, or any other.
Because of the way Massdrop operates there have been a couple of instances where they did a drop for a product that had been recently revised, and the drop had the previous version's details in the specifications section. The notable one was the Native 5 about six months ago, when there were still plenty of S35VN models available and everyone (including Massdrop) was caught by surprise when they received the newer S30V Native 5.
Some people weren't happy with the way they shipped the orders and then retroactively tried to make it right with people who were only interested in an S35VN iteration.
Then there's the Terzuola CTF, which ended up shipping with antiqued bronze hardware where the drop photos all indicated antiqued bronze liners and clip, with a much brighter and warmer bronze for the thumbdisk, the pivot, and possibly the single handle screw. The shade of G10 that were delivered for the tan and green models also turned out to be noticeably darker than the drop photos, though they are still exactly as described.
That irritated me at first, but on receiving the knife I feel like I overreacted and mine (in tan) looks great, carries well, and gives me like seven ways to open it, which is what I wanted. Others may not be as sardonically content as I am though, and some people still want to return theirs. Some people also have called it a 'downgrade', which I believe is unfair and not an accurate reflection of the circumstances which brought us here.
They have had a consistent approach with subdued and antiqued bronze finishes, and I think we should have expected the final product to have the same finish across all of the hardware elements. Being so involved in the discussion boards, I feel like I made a mistake by failing to ask them about the difference in hardware finishes shown in the drop photos, and I should have realized that the prototypes' mix of antiqued and shiny bronze finishes would be changed to a consistent look for the final product.
They also accidentally sent WE a glyph-only image file for the engraved Terzuola logo, and it wasn't caught until after the knives were finished. Because WE does damn near everything perfectly, the logo they received first was sized the same as the intended glyph+Terzuola lettering logo, leaving no room to add the lettering. Some people were far more upset about the missing Terzuola than the hardware, even going as far as to accuse Massdrop of cutting Bob Terzuola out of the deal while stealing his design and glyph logo. That is unreasonable as hell as far as I'm concerned.
Also I think the clean look of the dragon head glyph is perfect and if anything, means that this run may be worth more than future runs because of the well-done but ultimately misprinted logo. Now the serialized first run also has a unique version of the logo. Not intentionally, but so be it.

OmniseedI was aware of the native 5 blue box issue, I got the maxamet in that one. That was pretty well documented as a Spyderco issue and not MDs fault. The terzola stuff I was not privy too.
I think the community need to take a deep breath before jumping to 11 and screaming scam/fraud/foul.....MD is pretty up front about wait times and trying to make things right. Give them a chance to make thinks right when they go wrong, and be realistic about your expectations. Keep the pitchforks and torches to a minimum.
