sorry this is way to much money for something made in Vietnam, I will stick with the American made cottage companies!

bvogel64You should be dropping money to support Dan as a cottage industry designer and evaluate why you want the US to return to low wage, low skilled labor to compete at the bottom rung of the value chain. The way of the future is in technology and high level skills such as product design. Leave textiles to the developing countries and stop trying to bring us backward by a century.

bvogel64I'm having such an issue with this. Not so much the money - though when I think about it, it theoretically should be less, eh. BUT what I love so much about the UL community is that it has strong roots in cottage industries. You've got some big names entering the UL game, but I really like the idea of supporting a 'local' maker. While I really like the idea of this tent, stoked it was designed by a fellow canadian, I'm unsettled that it's made overseas - though I'm confident in its quality. Feels like I'm cheating. REALLY wish they could have made this happen within the cottage industry. I'll have to really think hard about this.

Architarterrr, I'm pretty sure he was saying the tent should be cheaper if it is made in a developing country. He's not agreeing with the price point. Has nothing to do with your fear of returning to the 1800s

FushuSix Moon Design tents are made in China. Lightheart gear was also made overseas although that may have changed.

bvogel64I am trying to find a shelter that is double walled, sets up fly first, has two doors and two vestibules, and weighs 28 oz with pegs made by a cottage company in the USA for $199. Oh wait, there isn't any.

cadureHuh, I never realized this! I've never looked too hard at either of those companies but I now notice the lack of "made in the USA" notes on SMD tents. Lightheart calls this out on the tents, but not clothing. Maybe I can buy this tent after all without feeling guilty hahah! Thanks for the info

FushuWhen I support cottage companies I'm thinking about supporting innovation at an individual level, outside the big mainstream players. I see this in other industries I work in too—the cool stuff happens on the edges cause the little folks are nimble and their ideas don't have to get watered-down for the mass market. When they can tap into bigger resources/infrastructure, like in this case, that's when things really start to happen. So I don't sweat U.S. v Asian manufacturing (unless I have reason to think the working conditions are questionable—not something I routinely vet, but I do limit how often I buy a new phone on that count.) I care more about the can-i-bring-this-cool-idea-i-have-to-market aspect? Can you just do something as a free agent without having to get a full staff design job at large brand? I want to throw some support behind those folks in order to get awesome gear.
KatherineKFWIW, the factory that is making these tents also makes tents for many of the big name outdoor brands that we all know. As part of that, this factory has passed many human rights and environmental audits. Obviously as a one man show I don't have my own auditing program for the factory, but I'm glad to know other major and well respected companies have taken a close look at their practices.

ArchitartThe USA should be a nation of rocket scientists and nothing else, right? Because we're all capable of that if only we get the education, right? Or astronauts, ship captains, submarine pilots. Um, no.
