I usually sleep in a mesh tent that i can add a fly to if it rains or clouds look bad. 90% of the time just the mesh. (sierra nevada in July) .Can i use the x-mid 1P that way? I read as many of the previous comments as i could and did a search and did not find an answer. apologies in advance if covered already.
wintermuttThe Sierra's are beautiful - you're fortunate to live there.
Yes you can pitch just the mesh inner of the X-Mid. To do so, you transfer the guylines from the fly peaks to the peaks of the inner, stake out the inner and then add the poles - pretty much the standard way of doing it. There aren't plastic loops at the inner peaks for the pole tips, so you just tie a little loop in the cord.

If you want to later add the fly if the rain rolls in, you can do that. Basically you'd toss it over, clip the inner to the fly and stake the fly. Maybe worth practicing once or twice.
