Not sure if this has been asked already.... My trekking poles are Black Diamond Z-poles....they adjust from 40-46 inches. Will those work with the X-Mid? Also, what is suggested for base camping....if one uses the trekking poles while day hiking, what is recommended to keep the tent from flopping around?
NkiehnThe guylines at the corners of the X-Mid have an adjustable length, and if you pitch them full extended then the tent ends up floating off the ground a bit with higher peaks, whereas if you pitch them short the tent pitches lower. Depending on this, the tent peaks require 45.5 - 46.5" tall pole.
So if your poles measure to 46", then they would work as long as you didn't extend the corner cords all the way and lift up the tent. The other caveat is that the ground might have a dip where the handle of your poles, in which case it might be a bit short.
I'm not sure if 40 - 46" is the factory spec or your measurement, but if it's the former then I'd take a close look at your poles and measure how long they can go. If they can actually go up to ~47" then you'd have no worries at all. If they measure to 46" then you could use them fine as long as you didn't overly extend the corner guylines, nor pitch in a dip (in this case you could add something under the pole to lift it up).
Re. base camping - you could tie the peak guylines up to a tree to hold one or both sides erected while you're off with the poles, or add in sticks (I've pitched with sticks).
