Hi Dan,
This tent looks awesome. waiting for the next time I can pre-purchase :) Some other brands have auxiliary poles you can buy separately if you don't use trekking poles. Is this something you are considering doing?

ScouterDaveyThanks SD. More X-Mids should be available around when these arrive, since I believe Massdrop is ordering some extra.
We're not considering offering auxiliary poles because I think this market is pretty well serviced already, but you could buy them elsewhere for use with the X-Mid. Ruta Locura sells nice fixed or adjustable length poles that are meant to be used in lieu of trekking poles. One person on here is planning to buy those for their X-Mid.

dandurstonI saw somewhere you say 117cm/46Inch is about the sweet spot for a pole, correct? I plan on going the Ruta route (for at least one of the poles) as well. Does it matter if the poles have a spike or not? Thanks!

BlinkenThe height needed for the pole varies depending upon (1) if the ground is raised or dipped where the pole goes and (2) how high you pitch the tent (if you lengthen the cord at the corners it will pitch higher). So it normally pitches from 46" - 47" but you could get it about 48" if you extend the cord all the way (this adds airflow). So the tent is typically 46 - 46.5" but it varies. If you are going with a non-adjustable pole, it's best to have a length around 48" so that it's never too short. Then you can just angle it slightly to take up the extra length. If you are going with an adjustable pole, then something with a range of 44 - 50" would be more than sufficient. As for the spike, Ruta Locura lists their spike as being for grommets, so I presume that it would be a great fit with the normal sized grommet we are using, but I haven't personally seen their spike. I presume that it fits well, but there is a slight danger that if it poked through unusually far then it could damage the tent above the grommet. Ideally it wouldn't be longer than a normal trekking pole tip. What you need is a pole that either fits in a grommet, or has a rounded head to it (like a trekking pole handle) so it's not going to damage the tent. You can pitch the X-Mid with a trekking pole tip up or handle up, but you wouldn't want to use a sharp pole that doesn't fit in the grommet. There is tough 210D nylon inside the peaks, but I'm sure a sharp edge could cut through it eventually. So yes I would get the spike (despite the scary name) and then just confirm that it doesn't poke through too far before you start using it.
