Hi Dan,
Would you be able to post a picture of the tent set up with a pad inside? I'm spatially inept so have a hard time visualizing how much space 28" is and how much of a difference the vertical wall make. I hopped in a Fly Creek UL 1 once and it was an immediate "hell no!" and I opted for the UL 2 as a one person.
Cheers

FushuHi Fushu,
What is it about the Fly Creek 1 that you found too small?
search
The Fly Creek 1 has a wider floor at the door end than the X-Mid but far less head / shoulder / elbow room. The Fly Creek is 38" wide at the door and that tapers 28" at the foot end, while the X-Mid is 28" wide the entire way, so you definitely have more floor area in the Fly Creek. But the Fl y Creek has radically less elbow and head room because the side walls slope in substantially, the roof is much lower and the roof slopes down a lot towards the back. The X-Mid has dual 43" high peaks and only dips to 41" between those peaks, whereas the Fly Creek has a single peak at 38" tall and then it far lower behind that, plus the side walls slope inward. Here's a drawing comparing this (not perfectly to scale but pretty close):

Also consider that the side walls of the X-Mid are vertical while the Fly Creek slopes in a lot, so the volume difference is even more stark. The low height of the FC + wall slope gives radically less shoulder/elbow room so the volume of the X-Mid inner is much larger. Likely 50 -70% greater. If you felt like the Fly Creek 1 was small because of the head/shoulder/elbow room then the X-Mid would be much better, whereas if your issue with the Fly Creek was the floor area, then the X-Mid isn't going to improve that.
I don't have a picture handy of the X-Mid with a pad inside but here is a properly scaled diagram that shows the pad inside and then another photo to that show the space:

dandurstonHi Dan,
It was a while ago but I remember getting a 'coffin' feeling and I'm wondering if the X-Mid's vertical walls will make a big difference as there is a LOT of slope in the Fly Creek. I didn't initially jump on the first Massdrop round as I'd like a larger inner width but the weight hit of the 2P (35oz) has me re-thinking the 1P. I think I'd be better suited for a 1+P but I understand your reasoning mentioned in another comment below (1P purchasers may get annoyed). I love the vestibule space, the no-sag fabric, the ultra simple set-up and fly first pitch.
Would hopping into a Hubba 1P give me a more accurate feeling of the inner? It is a rectangular 30", but not sure about the wall slope.

FushuBiggest difference is probably point of entry. With the fly creek,I felt like I was in a coffin as well because the only way in or out is the head and the severe slope made it feel tight everywhere except at the door.
I bought the copper spur ul because the side door and vestibule gave steeper walls, made it seem much roomier, more storage, and made it FAR easier to enter/exit. I’m looking forward to getting my mid-x because of the height, volume, but also the dual doors and massive vestibules.

Fushu"Would hopping into a Hubba 1P give me a more accurate feeling of the inner?"
The Hubba 1P has a similar floor area (30" x 84" vs. 28" x 87" for the X-Mid) but the head/shoulder/slope is still much more restrictive than the X-Mid. The Hubba 1P is only 36" all in the center and while the side walls are vertical, the end walls slope inwards a lot so you still can only sit up at one point in the tent.

So you could try out the Hubba and imagine what it would be like with vastly more head and shoulder room. Another option is to go to an outdoors store with a tape measure and try a few tents while measuring the height/width etc. Most likely a few less ultralight tents will have more generous shoulder/headroom like the X-Mid. The MSR Elixer 1 is a few inches taller than the Hubba 1 and would be closer to the X-Mid but the floor is also larger. If you imagine the floor area of the Hubba 1 with a bit more headroom than the Elixer 1, then you'd be in the ball park.

FushuYeah, hopping into a Hubba NX will give you a great idea of what tent you do NOT want, if headroom is a concern. After suffering with a BD First Light some years ago I will never buy an end entry tent. Of the mainstream side entry tents, the BA Cooper Spur has the tallest midpoint and non claustrophobic interior. However, the awning at the entry point is ridiculously low for taller people, and I always find myself doing the crab move (ass first) when exiting. The MSR tent is at least another two inches shorter in that department. While I have serious concerns about the x-mid rotated inner and the mental gymnastics it will require in tight spaces or somewhat inclined terrain, it is difficult to argue with what you get for the price, assuming good quality construction and materials.

FushuWhat about a REI Quarter Dome 1 or Passage 1. Hopefully you have an REI close by.

Remove the fly, hop in, zip it up, sit in the middle (both are around 40" peak height), face the narrow end (27" - 28" wide) push the mesh out at your shoulders until the walls are vertical (or as much as you can without damaging the tent) and imagine that much space for the length of the tent.
One of the unique things about the X-Mid 1P is that the peak height runs 3/4 the length of the tent and the walls are vertical. Though the roof sections do reduce the head room at both ends. I think (and hope 'cause I bought one!) will make a world of difference as far as how spacious it feels.
