KveiteYeah it’s a substantial wait. There’s a good chance it’s early (April) but we can’t be sure since production takes a while.

dandurstonThanks for your quick reply. As I‘m from Germany and planning for a trip to Norway starting May 20th, your early April-Chance could be just right in time for me (adding shipping time and some duty delay). That scenario is very uncertain and too risky for me.

KveiteFair enough. One thing to consider is that this tent is going to be sold out long before they are delivered and then we won't have any to sell for another year or so, so if you did order a tent and didn't arrive in time, you'd still be in an excellent position to re-sell it since none would be available. It wouldn't be hard to re-coup your investment. I did talk to Massdrop yesterday and they indicated things were still on schedule for mid-April.

dandurstonHi Dan, thanks - got it. I‘ve joined the drop now and I‘m looking forward to it. Just don‘t want to find myself under time pressure shortly before my trip and being forced to look for suitable alternatives.

KveiteI talked to Massdrop again this morning and they were able to provide a bit more detail. The first 1000 tents are on schedule to ship from the factory to Massdrop in mid-February. The design is locked in at this point and it's just simple production, which shouldn't be hard because this factory makes about 400,000 tents a year including for most of the big names (e.g. MSR). From there, they are ground shipping to Massdrop because air shipping on 2000 lbs of tents is a lot money and Massdrop has slim margins on this which is why it's so affordable. So it'll arrive with Massdrop about a month later (mid-late March) and then they spend a few weeks getting them inspected and out the door, so folks should have them sometime around mid-April (still no promises, but very likely). It sounds like the last few hundred tents (I think they're getting 1300) won't make it on that ship and would be a few weeks or month later (e.g. late May). So the bottom line is that it looks good for folks in the first 1000 to have them in April.

dandurstonHi Dan, Firstly, big thanks for bringing affordable, well thought off, double-walled lightweight tent to the market. Can't wait to use it for the next year hikes. And hopefully a few years after it :) Regarding delivery - with the latest drop just finished, I've received an email from Massdrop stating that tent will be shipped on Fri, May 24th. It's a bit off the mid-April date you were referencing. Do you know if that late-May date is firm and tent could not be shipped earlier, or is there still a chance the first batch could be shipped some time in April?

ukgeloHi Ukgelo, I'm pretty sure that email you got is just an automated email with the same estimated delivery date that is on the drop page. That date is quite conservative. I discussed this with Massdrop about a week ago and they said these tents were on track to ship out in mid-April. So I would say there is a very high chance it ships in April. I hope you enjoy the tent!

dandurstonI‘m really surprised. Now you say mid-May is earlier than expected. But when selling it, you said different. Ewwwh!

KveiteHi Kveite, I think there is a miscommunication here. When I say "mid-May is earlier than expected" I am referring to tents that have yet to be sold, not these December tents. This thread is mostly about the tents that were sold back in December. Massdrop had an estimated ship date of May 24 on the drop but I said they might be earlier than that and may ship in April. Those comments are still accurate to the best of my knowledge. I don't know precisely how production is coming along, but I'm told it is going well so there continues to be a good chance that the tent you ordered in December ships in April. In addition to those, we have a final 300 tents coming that have yet to be sold. They are coming in a separate batch that is arriving after the main shipment. Previously I had told some folks inquiring about any remaining tents that these final 300 were likely to ship in June, but production has been going well so this last shipment is likely to be ready ahead of that estimate in May. Of course the first shipment with your tent is ahead of that one, which bodes well for you getting your tent in April.

dandurstonHi Dan, hopefully it was a miscommunication, and I‘m wrong with my fears. I ordered in December after you replied that „it is likely in April.“ In an earlier post you mentioned that the production would have finished in mid to end-February. And after that, it‘ll take about 1month for shipping ( from Vietnam to USA), then some weeks for inspection by massdrop ( btw: First time I hear that inspection runs after shipping: Instead, pre-shipping inspection and during-production inspection are standard, just doesn‘t make sense to check the quality when it has already been delivered and the manufacturer already received the money). If this schedule is still within the plan, the production in Vietnam has already finished over one week ago. Why isn‘t there any confirmation about it? Would you please make massdrop to confirm that the production has been finished and the tents are on the way from Vietnam to USA? They must be on the way right now, otherwise the April scenario is done!

KveiteHi Kveite, That timing/process you describe is accurate to the best of my knowledge. I don't know when money changes hands between Massdrop and the factory, but I suspect the process is that the factory does QA checks, then ships to Massdrop who do additional QA checks and then complete payment. As for the current status of production, I don't know precisely where things are at. I inquired a few weeks ago and I was told that things were coming along well. I wish I had more detail than this, but Massdrop doesn't provide me with access to the details on the production side of things. As I describe is some responses to others here, I suspect they would be hesitant to come out and say things are ahead of schedule in case delays happen after that. I do know that we got the final, approved design to the manufacturer on schedule and the manufacturer is very experienced in meeting deadlines (they've been building only tents for over 60 years and they build 400,000 per year for major clients like MSR) so I think it is highly likely that they have competed production. As I wrote earlier, the second shipment is expected for May, so that bodes well for the first shipment being early. So certainly some updates from Massdrop would be nice, but I wouldn't take the lack of those to mean that things aren't going well. I know that Massdrop is very focused on doing everything that can to at least meet the estimated ship date if not do better than that. I expect we'll be hearing something before too long.
